When the coronavirus spread in China it was expected that Taiwan would be affected badly. Yet Taiwan has managed the situation in a number of ways that has limited cases to 50. Health experts attribute this to quick preparation and early intervention. After the 2002 and 2003 SARS epidemic Taiwan setup the National Health Command Center (NHCC) to combine resources for managing a health crisis. This was to prepare for the next crisis. Taiwan acted early imposing a ban on travel to China, Macau and Hong Kong, and a ban on the exporting of surgical masks to keep a stockpile in Taiwan.  Taiwanese government integrated data from national health insurance with immigration and customs data. A program was developed  that allowed people to report travel histories and symptoms by scanning a QR code when they arrive in Taiwan. Travelers receive a text message with their health status that allows customs officers to focus on the ones requiring attention. The public's willingness to follow government regulation is now much higher after the difficulties caused by the SARS crisis. This makes them willing to follow more readily action taken by the government, as SARS memory is still fresh in their minds. Investments in public health systems and in biomedical research is much further advanced than in other countries. A research team at Academia Sinica has developed antibodies that can identify the protein that causes coronavirus, The aim is to shorten the test time for diagnosis to 20 minutes. Piketty was trained at the London School of Economics, where Greens leader Annalena Baerbock of Germany was also a student, and today he is professor at LSE. His research has shown that for economic growth to happen after the pandemic European societies need to take the lead and build fairer societies where everyone has a decent living and a fair share of the pool of resources in each country. Piketty is respected by leaders that range from Biden and Scholz in US and Germany to president Xi in China. Biden's Families and Workers plan and Scholz's plan for dignity of workers and working class, and the Common Prosperity campaign of president Xi for greater investments in education, healthcare and housing are all inspired by Piketty and by the socially conscious background of these leaders. With a mere 1% of GDP invested in public healthcare India remains backward in its commitment to the welfare of the rural poor. Prime minister's Modi's plan is laudable says this BBC report, but the record of implementation is spotty at best at the state level for such plans. The new plan announced in the 2018 Indian Budget is for a health plan covering 500 million Indians with 5 lakh rupees coverage, something never tried before but with a cost of a mere $1.7 billion is something that the country woefully lacked or neglected to tackle.

This plan may be better implemented at the national level, and particularly where the reputation of the governing party and its plans for industrialization are at stake in the coming year's national elections. If accomplished and the Modi government is eager to take on these challenges it would be a significant step to balanced and overall development of the Indian economy.

Consider the way Amelio recruits Chinese talent working in the local language, and how he works with Chinese managers who tend to be more reticent on issues and opinion. Amelio is unique in his approach to hiring Chinese managers and building a bench with deep talent. He has abandoned what he calls the "colonial approach" of hiring with expat executives interviewing in English for managers in emerging markets. He says its a good idea to leave the English filter out to get more talent. Instead he has English language classes for the hired managers to help them improve language skills. Amelio talks about Lenovo's approach to the U.S. and other international markets as it competes with the likes of Acer and Dell. Amelio headed Dell's Asian operations prior to this position. Lenovo is testing ideas for giving low cost access at $100-$150 to people in India and China. The way this works is for Lenovo working with Intel and Microsoft to reduce the cost by 50%. For the bank to have half the ownership and the customer paying for the rest. Customers would buy cards for 10 hours of computing, and buy the computer back from the bank through regular use. Lenovo's strategy is to go after small and medium size businesses and consumers to increase market share in the U.S. and Europe. To do this it is using soccer star Ronaldinho and basketball stars to give Lenovo visibility as a brand. In other areas, Amelio has brought Dell managers to Lenovo to improve the supply chain management, an area Lenovo needed to improve....

Serbia ranks high in the countries with successful vaccination drives. About 29.5 people of every 100 have been vaccinated. The head of South Korea's Disease Control committee says that patients with coronavirus can't relapse. About 277 patients tested positive after recovery. Looking at this the scientists found that there were harmless traces that were incorrectly detected by the RNA test which are not live so that patients are still in good health with no relapse.   $112 billion out of $170 billion in new investments resulting from Biden's 2 climate laws, and the bulk of the 200,000 new jobs are being pushed by president Biden into Republican states. Republican voting states including many southern states are getting the largest share of the hundreds of billions of dollars in renewable energy investments by the Biden administration. Two new climate laws were passed by Biden without many Republican votes in 2022. WSJ offers a visual guide to where new manufacturing investment is taking place. It shows that three fourths of the $170 billion in investments by companies are going to Republican voting states. On a state wide basis this amounts to $112 billion for Republican states. Most of the public is unaware of the role of the climate laws in this new investment in manufacturing. This is why other presidents talked about manufacturing investment including previous presidents Republican and Democrat, president Biden has done the country a great service by making much needed investment in manufacturing and creating a new sense of hope in once neglected communities. Investments are being attracted to these states many in the south with easier land development and lower costs for labor, electricity, and lower taxes. This gives Republican states the ability to use their advantages in the best way and overcome the failure of many Republicans in Congress to support these investments with president Biden putting together bipartisan support.  ...

It took a long time for the banks to understand what is in their best interests is in the best interests of the country's economy and homeowners, something Sheila Bair has been saying since the beginning of this year and implementing at IndyMac. Its just too costly for banks to use the foreclosure process to recover their money and it makes much better financial sense on the bottomline of banks and for the economy to make home payments affordable. Because the worse home prices get the worse the economy and banks do and nothing drives home prices down like foreclosures. The Bank of America settlement for Countrywide with state attorney generals to modify loans for 400,000 homeowners because of predatory lending practices also set the direction. Chase Bank is now using the Bair template to get the monthly payments down to an affordable level which is about 40% of the current payment by reducing interest rates and using a smaller loan balance and keep homeowners in their homes. Chase's plan will help 400,000 homeowners and will also help homeowners who are having difficulty making payments. It will put a 90 day hold on foreclosures till the program is put in place. Yet there is one problem. Only $350 billion of the 1.5 trillion in home mortgage it services are owned by Chase, the rest are owned by investors in the form of mortgage securities. It can do little for homeowners covered by these securites that are owned by hedge funds and other funds as a few of these funds oblivious of the overall interest including their own have threated to sue if loans are modified, and it would take some time to figure out who owns each security and what the terms are for modifying loans for that security. Its this part of mortgage securitiization that has slowed down a rational process of unwinding this problem throughout housing by making homeowners monthly payments affordable. And Fed's Bernanke did not come to grips with this point in his talk about mortgage securitization to UC Berkeley on October 31,2008, that mortgage securitization done in a way that make loan modification difficult is dangerous as it is today, and makes a crisis bigger than it otherwise would be, and turn a USA crisis into a global crisis through ricotcheting effects and a series of bad decisons....

US jobs reports May June 2025 revisions suggest slowdown.14000, 19000,  and 73000 US job gains May June and July 2025 suggest slowdown in the economy. Layoffs are low but hiring is slowing as companies tackle uncertainty. Number of people unemployed 27 weeks increases from 1.65 to 1.83 million in July 2025. Healthcare and social assistance added jobs. Government layoffs were 12000. Unemployment rate increases from 4.1% to 4.2% in July 2025.

In 2024 166,000 jobs were needed for unemployment rate to be steady, now just 86,000 jobs because immigration has dropped to new lows. This is important to note for rest of 2025 to 2030.

Also jobs reports are seeing downward revision because smaller companies tend to send in data late to the Labor Department in the current uncertainty.

The Oxford vaccine manufactured and distributed by Astra Zeneca faced manufacturing problems in 2020. The company is fixing these manufacturing problems and plans to meet demand from Britain, the European Union, and the rest of the world. It plans to double vaccine monthly production to 200 million doses monthly by April. CEO Pascal Soriot says "Is it perfect? No, it's not perfect, but it's great, and tell me who else is making 100 million doses in February?" The Oxford vaccine has shown strong protection against severe coronavirus symptoms and is important in the fight against the pandemic. To tackle variants of the coronavirus the company plans to have another jab developed by autumn this year.

Britain and India are depending on Oxford vaccine to vaccinate large parts of the population. India has a second vaccine developed by Indian scientists at Bharat Biotech that is also in use.

Russia is expected to earn nearly $321 billion from energy exports in 2022, up more than a third from 2021. This more than anything else is supporting the currency. It also means Europe will continue to buy Russian oil and gas through 2022. The rest of the reason experts say for the resilience of the rouble is  that Russia has put in place capital controls and raised interest rates to 20%. This they say is an artificial boost and the rouble is likely to weaken in the long term. 

The steps take to keep the value of the rouble and also the damage to the trading and economic relationship Russia had with the world after invasion will reduce growth in Russia. Growth of 2.8% in 2022 will turn into 10-15% contraction in the economy in 2022.
