After 16 months of talks political leaders from Dutch language Flanders, French speaking Wallonia, and multilingual Brussels, historically at odds with each other, come up with a new arrangement for running the country in 2011. Belgium will move closer to being a confederation like Switzerland, with powers and funds shifted to the regions. Of particular significance is the resentment by the Flemish people in the north of an administrative arrangement that was setup along French lines. The new devolution of powers gives autonomy to the Flemish region. In the past frequent coalition governments have added to the political instability.

Private equity firms like Apollo and Blackstone and others may find themselves in trouble further down the road in the leveraged loan market where these private equity firms took on leveraged funding to purchase loans from banks at 85 cents on the dollar when they are down now to 65 cents on the dollar. This funding was obtained for 18 months so no immediate margin calls but if there is a long recession then further down the road both the private equity firms and the banks who thought they had unloaded these loans may have trouble with this.

Hon Hai, a Chinese company which makes IPads and IPhones for Apple has grown by doing high quality work for lower prices than anyone else. In the process Hon Hai has generated a culture that is tough even by Chinese standards. About 250,000 workers are employed in its factories in Shenzen alone. A series of suicides at the plant has attracted attention to the tough conditions. One worker says conversation on the production line is banned, bathroom breaks are limited to 10 minutes for every 2 hours, and the discipline is strict. Hon Hai won Apple's order says one supply-chain search expert, by pricing low. Its CEO Gou was willing to sell some components at zero profit according to people familiar with his actions. Workers come from rural areas, are very young, the first time they are away from their families, and live in dormitories, eight to ten people to a room. Hon Hai's response is to increase wages 30%. But a report about a college graduate who was asked about conditions reflects the general feeling. This graduate makes twice as much in product development, at 2000 yuan a month, or $293 a month. But the monotonous life and the feeling of no future affects this worker and may be a sign of something changing in China's factories. The unwillingness to accept the conditions that existed in the past....

Ferrero outlines his plans to double the company's sales by expanding outside of Europe where it now gets 80% of sales. Euromonitor estimates show Ferrero with 8% share of the world chocolate market compared to Nestle's 12%. Ferrero SpA's sales are 8 billion euros for 2013. The company started with a small store in Alba, near Turin, Italy in 1942. Its hazelnut and chocolate spread Nutella is a popular product in Europe. Ferrero has expanded by about 45% since 2006, with rising sales of the Nutella and Kinder brands. A path Ferrero plans to take is expanding sales in China and other Asian markets, following up on the popularity of its Rocher brand of chocolates in China. The problems Ferrero faces in the U.S. is the presence of big established competitors Hershey and Cadbury, a fragmented distribution chain, and the uphill task of convincing peanut butter users to try Nutella for breakfast, and snacks. Ferrero is a family owned company and Giovanni Ferrero plans to keep it that way, seeing new opportunities in the chocolate and food market that the Italian company can take advantage of. In doing so he hopes to generate enough growth to compete effectively as an independent family owned company with Nestle and Hershey....

In a first at Davos World Economic Forum, China's president Xi Jinping uses the 2017 meeting to give a one hour long spirited defense of the world trading system, critical of U.S. president elect Trump's protectionist views without naming him. Xi pointed out that "no one will be winners in a trade war." And went on to add that restricting world trade was like "locking oneself in a dark room, keeping out wind and rain from outside but also light and air." For the first time Jinping stated that China would take the U.S. role of defending the world trading system from attack as needed. On climate change Xi defended the Paris accords, and gave China's commitment to pursue changes regardless of what the U.S. under president Trump does. This follows Chancellor Merkel of Germany's statements on the issue critical of the views of president elect Trump, and taking the lead to defend the world trading system. Xi also pointed out that many of the ills that led to voter discontent in the West were not really from the freeing up of trade but from the pursuit of excessive profit with the financial crisis of 2008.   ...

Wounded or maimed veterans get psychological closure by visiting the scenes where theywere injured. Here wounded veterans visit locations in Dyala province under Operation Proper Exit, eight wounded men- five amputees and one blinded soldier- places tey left while unconscious or in agony. This is the second such trip and the results in development, stopping night tremors for the wounded men, and psychological closure have been phenomenal. Rick Kell, head of of Troops First, who got General Ray Odierno to agree to the idea says wounded soldiers said they wanted to go back, and he kept hearing it repeatedly. Sgt. Luke Wilson, 29, from Hermiston, Oregon. He lost his left leg above the knee in agrenade attack in Baghdad in 2004. Kell arranged that they fly in Business Class for the 13 hour flight so they could lie down or take their legs off. When they walked off the helicopters they walked under their own power to be greeted by American officers and soldiers, clapped on their backs and welcomed as old friends. All in uniform and none of their injuries or prostheses visible except up close. Sgt. John Hyland, 38, from San Antonio, who lost his left leg and sufffered back injuries when an improvised explosive device hit his Humvee in 2007, and Specialist Craig Chavez, 29, from Temecula, California blinded by a2006 I.E.D. blast that destroyed his face- which was reconstructed- injuries which meant losing his left eye and most of the vision in his right. Specialist Chavez says it was apoint of special pride for him to walk around the base without any help. And Sgt. Hyland was amazed by the silence, the silence from no sounds of mortar shells going off and exploding L.E.D. devices. In the memorial hall Sgt. Hyland pauses at a picture of Specialist Jonathan Rivadeneira, 22, from Queens, who saved his life in an Humvee attack on Sept. 11, 2007, only three days later Rivadeneira was killed. Sgt. Hyland began crying quietly and lowered himself in pain onto his right knee and began to pray. Outside he was still shaken by the experience and the other wounded soldiers gathered around him till he recovered ....

Italy will get 6 billion euros in savings from lower interest rate charges on its debt as a result of lower borrowing costs in capital markets. Italy's borrowing costs were at record low of 2.08% for debt issued in 2013. The new budget fails to provide relief in payroll taxes that would help reduce high youth unemployment. A payroll tax cut will increase take home pay of lower income workers by about 15 euros a month. Carlo Cottarelli, IMF expert, has the task of doing a spending review to cut 32 billion euros in public spending within 3 years. The Letta administration is looking at which tax credits to eliminate. These tax breaks range from aftershool sports programs and veterinary costs and amount to 130 billion euros a year. Automatic measures to reduce spending are part of recent Italian legislation and act to keep spending down. limits in the event the political system fails to produce agreement.

The results of a Wall Street Journal analysis of 11 countries shows the risk of a stretched out period of stagnation in the economies of the USA, the UK and Japan. Jobs is a critical area in which this is apparent. In Japan employment is down 3.3% from December 2007, in the UK 2% lower, and in the USA 4.8% lower from December 2007. U.S. household debt is down from 131% in early 2008 to 122%, and poses a big burden. In the UK the household debt is larger than in the USA. And Japan's deficits are over 200% of GDP, creating an overhang that depresses jobs and growth. S. Korea, Taiwan and Australia have benefitted from the recovery since 2008 in China, India and the rest of Asia.

People of a new generation cannot imagine that India that they know today could not exist without the integration of 560 smaller kingdoms within overall British India that were allowed self rule under British conditions and law. They made up no less than one third of the British Empire in India. During India's 75th anniversary of independence and looking to India's 100th year a young generation born after 1947 growing up in post-British India cannot easily imagine the critical years after 1910, with Gandhi writing Hind Swaraj that year during a period when he negotiated for the rights of Indians in South Africa just to move freely. The years of the struggle for Swaraj between 1910 and 1931, the Satyagraha March to the Sea at Porbandar to protest the British Salt Tax, the elected assemblies that brought the first experience with self-rule in the thirties, and the "karenge o marenge" pledge to do or die with Quit India Movement in 1942 by Gandhi.  The dominant role of Jawaharlal Nehru after 1947, and that of daughter Indira Gandhi after him, wittingly or unwittingly had the intended or unintended effect of obscuring from view the role of many of the leaders around Gandhi of whom Jawaharlal Nehru was just one. No doubt about Jawaharlal who wore a prisoners badge number token around his neck and spent years in British jails. No doubt about his contribution. Lyrarc throws a spotlight on other leaders who made equally large contributions so that India's young people can get a better sense of what this struggle involved and how it was won by the  people of that time  under the most difficult conditions and trials. This includes Vallabhbhai Patel, Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Rajagopalachari, Maulana Azad, and the young Lal Bahadur Shastri. Others Naoroji, Vidyasagar, Vivekananda, from an even earlier period, Gokhale and Tilak, are people on whose shoulders Mohandas Gandhi stood on and fully accepted as his mentors, as do today's Indian leaders. This BBC report looks at the role of Vallabhbhai Patel of Kheda district in Gujarat state and of his assistant VP Menon. Gandhi was born in 1869, Patel in 1875 and Nehru in 1889. In 1947 Gandhi made the decision to go with Jawaharlal Nehru who was 14 years younger than Vallabhbhai Patel as the younger leader and prime minister who could take India through this critical first decade after independence with Patel as deputy prime minister. Patel died of heart conditions in 1950. Patel's assistant during the crucial period of negotiations for independence after the war ended in 1945 with Viceroy Mountbatten was V.P. Menon.  Mohandas Gandhi always believed that with hundreds of millions of Indians gaining consciousness of their rights even under British concepts of free men and free people, and a sense of their own dignity under God, the British would simply have to leave. His faith in the Bhagavad Gita that affirmed this right under God was firm and indomitable. This was true by 1947. He needed other leaders around him to structure the form this independence would take in terms of administration of the country and the constitution of the new nation. He also needed to bring those parts of British India that were not absorbed into direct British rule during successive wars between 1756 and 1857. These small kingdoms were retained under princely rule after the British decided to halt the policy of integrating them into direct rule following a war in 1857 that almost led to the downfall of the British in India. How large was this area is hard to comprehend when one sees that this was one third of British India in land mass from the Himalayan mountains to the Indian Ocean. Harder still it is to grasp that it would involve bringing in about 560 different princely states or kingdoms into the new India of 1947. It was the task of Vallabhbhai Patel and of his assistant V P Menon to do this. Scientists worry that microplastics are linked to growing rates of cancer, heart disease, and other diseases. One study says people inhale or ingest 74,000 to 124,000 microplastic particles per year through breathing, eating and drinking. The plastic particles are everywhere around us. Of 10,000 chemicals used in making plastic a fourth of these are toxic. Consider in 1950 2 million metric tons of plastic were made, now 400 million metric tons. Of 8 billion tons produced only 10% recycled so the rest are in oceans, landfills, and around us. Ingested or inhaled they cause inflammation in our bodies that lead to cancer or other diseases.

Malaysia filed criminal charges against Goldman Sachs Group Inc. unit and a former partner in relation to the 1MDB financial scandal. Goldman arranged a $6.5 billion in bonds for 1MDB in 2012 and 2013 of which $2.7 billing was allegedly stolen, according to this report in the Wall Street Journal. The bank was able to make $600 million in profits. Malaysia's Attorney General stated that "Malaysia considers the allegations in the charges against the accused to be grave violations of our securities laws, and to reflect their severity, prosecutors will seek criminal fines against the accused well in excess of the $2.7 billion misappropriated from the bonds proceeds and $600 million in fees received by Goldman Sachs, and custodial sentences, the maximum term of imprisonment being 10 years." The 1MDB scandal was a major issue in recent Malaysian elections resulting in a return to government of Mahathir Mohammed in an attempt to restore integrity and transparency to the country's finances and spending. Russia invades Ukraine on multiple fronts, across Belarus, across its western border with Ukraine, on the pre dawn hours of February 24, 2022. Russian foreign minister Lavrov says "tense and detailed discussions" with US and NATO are still taking place. In talks with the US, president Putin of Russia had demanded that Ukraine commit to not joining NATO. The US insisted that this was upto Ukraine and that the territorial integrity of Ukraine had to be respected. Interventions by Macron of France and other leaders failed to bring the two sides closer. The US and Europe with a reluctant Germany looked at sanctions as a deterrent. This proved to be wrong. Mr. Putin has a passionate view of Ukraine and Kviv's historical role in the formation of the Russian state, evident in his televised address only 48 hours before the actual invasion. Ukraine has shifted between Poland and the Baltic states, Germany on one side and Russia on the other in its thousand year old history. The shift away from Bolsheviks and Communists under the Soviet Union after 1990 changed the relationship of Ukraine with its neighbors once again as Ukraine became closer to Poland and the Baltics, and Germany. Germany remains reluctant to revert to the relationship with Russia that led to 2 World Wars. During the leadership of Willy Brandt and successive German SPD leaders, as well as with Konrad Adenauer and CDU leaders, the goal was to build a good relationship with Russia. Merkel of the CDU went as far as accepting dependence on Russia for 40% of its gas supplies, after shifted out of nuclear energy and supporting a new Nordstream undersea pipeline for gas supplies.  The early reaction on DW.com and German television was one of shock as no one really expected that this would lead to a full scale invasion. Scholz of the SPD the new chancellor in 2022 was not active in forging anew consensus allowing NATO's Stoltenberg who is a former Norwegian prime minister 2005-2013 to frame the response of Europe. Norway's role in European security was marginal for most of the twentieth century. Other events had detracted from bringing active German and American participation in coming up with a framework of dialogue to address concerns of both sides and still build a common ground for peace- Afghanistan, the pandemic in its third year, China's deteriorating one sided trade relationship with America that hurt American workers and manufacturing. As a result China and Germany were essentially absent in building the framework for peace. Afghanistan hasty withdrawal made it harder for president Biden to come up with new approaches to build a common framework. President Macron made some faltering efforts on the fringes even as president Putin focused on the US response and its intentions with NATO on European soil, and declared that it was directly US Russia negotiations that needed to work. With this the whole framework of relations since the presidency of Reagan and the relations with Russia and China come to a close. And a new framework needs to be constructed that draws in India already or soon to be the most populous nation in the world, in an effort to build an enduring new framework. The voices of Eastern Europe need to be heard, yet balanced with the voices from India, China, Germany, Russia, and other countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa that are affected by world events. ...

Democratic politicians he said had moved away from their working class base towards places like Martha's Vineyard. For Republicans the embrace of tax cutting, the deficit, and cuts in education and healthcare, entitlements, to the exclusion of everything else in a recession environment led to the rise of Trump and the rejection of stands on these issues- including amazingly the embrace of a $5.3 trillion increase in the deficit under the Trump plan estimated by economists and a recession after a temporary boost.  Inserted into this were the culture wars, immigration, with the change to mass deportation as a solution to immigration problems. ...

Walkway Over the Hudson is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. It is 1.28 miles long, 212 feet above New York's Hudson River, 80 miles north of Manhattan. It opened in October 2009 after years of reclamation efforts and with new LED lighting that makes it usable at night. About a million visitors have taken a walk over the bridge. A local handyman, Bill Sepe, pushed the pedestrian walkway idea by forming Walkway Over the Hudson in 1992. The organization took ownership of the old bridge, built when Pougkeepsie was an industrial town, and in 2007 raised money. Work began thereafter, taking 16 months and $38.8 million to build the Walkway, and is now run by the state as a State Historic Park.

Expanding trade between Eastern Europe and Russia . Exports from Eastern Europe went from $2.3 billion to $10 billion from 2000 to 2006. And Russian exports mostly oil and gas went up from $14.5 billion to $24.1 billion in the same period. The trade is expected to grow significantly in coming years. Russia grew by 7.5 % in 2007 and Eastern Europe by about 6%, according to the Viennna Institute for International Economic Studies. Consumer spending on both sides has grown and with it the trade is growing. And with manufacturing investment in Eastern Europe from Germany and other countries there is demand in Russia for these products with higher quality such as the Skoda made in the Czech Republic by Volkswagen.

The Southport killings in the UK where a delinquent 17 year old youth attacked children leading to riots in the UK in 2024 has led to a public inquiry. 

Terrorism was previously dominated by terrorist groups, yet the new threat Starmer says was of “acts of extreme violence perpetrated by loners, misfits, young men in their bedroom, accessing all manner of material online, desperate for notoriety. Sometimes inspired by traditional terrorist groups. But fixated on that extreme violence, seemingly for its own sake.” 

Experts say there have been a number of such attacks before in Reading in 2022, and in the killing of a Tory MP. Neil Basu, former head of Counter Terrorism UK says when he retired in 2021, the “mixed, unclear or unstable” suspect category — someone who did not align with a particular ideology but was set on violent activity was about 40 per cent of casework.

At the height of the Eurozone crisis in December 2011, David Brooks points out that it is important not to forget what the Germans are saying in this crisis. They are arguing for truth in accounting, which the government in Greece failed to do, and which may have more to do with negative opinion in the media and with the public in Germany about Greece than any other factor. They are arguing against speculative excesses that enabled Greece to borrow recklessly. And they are making the argument that the only way to put the finances of the eurozone on a sound basis is to have the financial discipline that is necessary for a sound currency. Anthony Faiola pointed out recently that one estimate for tax evasion in Italy is $340 billion a year- Washington Post, 11/25/2011. Greece has a similiar problem, which needs to be addressed. This view has credibility and the backing of every principle of sound financial practices, irrespective of country or region. For ordinary Germans who have gone through years of wage restraint during the period of high unemployment, their attitude is captured in one German workers response to Greece's situation - when she said there are "poor children in Germany also." Years after reunification were a difficult experience for Germany, and left parts of the country still affected by the experience. The period of high unemployment is still a fresh memory, as the economic recovery is fairly recent. There is a feeling that the situation is precarious, depending on exports, as the 2009 downturn showed. These facts remain even when one considers the criticism levelled at Germany. Germany benefitted from the bubble in the economies of Southern Europe through surging exports- from a currency that was undervalued in relation to neighbors- because of the common currency. German banks lent heavily to Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, along with French and British banks, and bear responsibility for reckless lending and not doing due diligence for loans to Greece and other countries. Germany also carries the burden of memories of hyperinflation in the 1920's, and the sense along with France that partnership is necessary for peace in Europe. Germany's position on austerity measures also has one underlying weakness - if this leads to shrinking economies in southern Europe in the name of fianncial discipline, then the plan fails as tax revenues decline and budget deficits increase. Given this experience Germany faces the challenge of convincing neighbors of the need for good governance and sound spending practices for long term stability of the currency, even as it leads the effort for providing short term funding. In the short run this reaps criticism for Germany, including criticism for some members such as Greece having to leave the euro as a way to regain competitiveness and growth. Experts have suggested that this would be a better option for Greece than a shrinking economy after strong austerity measures, and the referendum proposed by former prime minister Papandreou on strict austerity measures is likely to have gone in this direction. ...

By the end of December 2010, 2 million people in the USA are expected to lose their unemployment benefits, and and additional one million by the end of January 2011, according to the National Employment Law Project. This would happen if both parties in Congress fail to agree on extending unemployment benefits. The first week of December marks the expiration of federal programs that have extended unemployment benefits from 34 to 73 weeks beyond the 26 weeks given by the states. Republicans want to cut spending elsewhere to cover the cost. Democrats say $2 is returned for every dollar that goes into unemployment insurance because this money is spent quickly by needy families.
