The move by Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler to merge is seen as an effort to use consolidation as a way to tackle depressed demand. Ford and GM are struggling in foreign markets, as Toyota and VW have expanded in foreign markets, and Geely has expanded in China with stakes in Daimler and Volvo AB. Added costs for the shift to electric cars, higher emissions standards,  are also hurting car makers. Global new car sales of 96 million in 2018 are expected to decline by 4% in 2019, and remain sluggish, with the U.S. China trade war and Brexit taking its toll. Some car companies are particularly affected. Chrysler's European car factories ran at about 52% in 2018, well below European industry average of 73%.

U.S. auto sales in May 2012 increased by 26% over the prior year. Toyota sales were up 87% to 203,000 bringing its market share up by 5 percentage points to 15.2%. Honda's sales were up 48% to 134,000, according to Autodata. Overall seasonally adjusted sales were up from the 11.7 million vehicles in 2011 to 13.8 million vehicles in May 2012. Ford's sales were up to 216,000, with a 30% increase in sales of F-series pickup trucks. A cause for concern for Ford would be the 35% of sales in May to rental companies and fleet buyers.

Bob Knoll of the NY Times reviews the Buick Lucerne at the time of New York Auto Show 2006. He says the Buick Lucerne has gone a long way in giving GM a fresh modern look. It is based on the upscale architecture of the Cadillac DTS. Quality ratings by J.D. Powers and Consumer Reports are a strong point for Buick. 1. What did GM fix that Toyota had? Precision down to the little details, with manufacturing clearances of just 0.5 millimeters between adjacent surfaces, and tightly fitting body panels. 2. Sportier contemporary look to appeal to younger demographics. 3. Bringing in new technology thats handy. Wipers that come on automatically when it rains, heated washer fluid, remote-start feature for winter mornings, and so on. 4. Compared to its main competitor, the Toyota Avalon, it stands up well, though with a slightly lower fuel economy.

Subaru makes 80% of its cars in Japan compared to 21% for Honda. Toyota also makes a larger percentage of its cars in Japan. The swing in exchange rates bringing the yen to 116 to the U.S. dollar is likely to benefit both exporters. Experts expect both companies to launch a product offensive in the U.S. market and and not start a price war with American makers. Subaru sales of Forester and other models surged 18% in 2014 to about 500,000 cars in 2014. Toyota is the largest shareholder of Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy. Fuji shares have quintupled since Nov. 2012. Subaru has always pursued a strategy of making in Japan to keep high product quality, according to CEO Yoshinaga, with half of its sales coming from the U.S. market. For the year ending March 2015 Fuji Heavy net profit is expected to reach $2 billion.

Ford Motor company plans to expand its auto dealer network in China to 680 dealers by 2015 from 340 in 2010. Ford will bring 15 new vehicles and 20 advanced powertrains to China by 2015. This is part of Ford's effort to catchup with GM, Toyota and Honda in China.

Only Honda is withstanding the the sales shock as numbers tumble from June of a year earlier. Toyota auto sales down 21%, Ford 28% and Chrysler 36%. GM 18% because of special incentives and discounts. Honda a modest 1.1 % increase in sales. The US manufacturers have their plants skewed towards making trucks and SUV's so turning out Chevy Cobalts and Focus cars is a big problem as there are huge drops in truck and SUV sales and customers are shifting to cars. Sales of Ford SUV's fell 55% and its formerly top selling truck line dropped 38%. Toyota sold about two thirds fewer light trucks than in 2007 June. Market share of domestic makers in the USA market dropped to 46% from 50%. To get some idea of capacity constraints. According to Global Insight GM can build only 250,000 Chevy Cobalts, while Honda has the capacity to build 400,000 Honda Civic small cars annually.

From the 1998 Corolla to the 2009 version the fuel economy has remained the same contrary to Toyota's image on fuel economy improvements. The revised EPA estimates for the 1998 Corolla 27 mpg city and 34 highway. 2009 Corolla with 1.8 liter is rated 27 city, 35 highway. About new imagination in design : very little except some tweaking here ad there, boring? yes according to some who were Toyota customers. Toyota has not been a leader as the Scion would suggest but with the Tundra and the Corolla more of a follower, consider that 370,000 Corolla were sold in 2007 making it the third best selling car in the USA.

Robots are also seen as useful for housecleaning services, simple yet complex tasks as washing dishes, cleaning rooms, vacuuming, are tackled by robots as the number of workers available for such tasks is small. Robots are also used at the entry of buildings. With low immigration and resistance to immigration, Japan prefers to use robots. The robots will be in display for the Olympics with Toyota having a special set of welcoming robots. 

Japan leads the way in making robots human, cuddly and friendly, and are presented in this way in popular culture. A big difference from the way robots are used in manufacturing by U.S., Taiwan, South Korea and China, and how robots are seen in other countries.

Fuel efficiency for the entire US vehicle fleet increased by 1.4 miles per gallon to 22.4 miles per gallon for 2009, an increase of 7% over 2008. Toyota ended its relationship with Tesla to focus on fuel cell technologies. Panasonic is taking up electric car batteries project in stages to limit risk. As Tesla focusses on a car for the mass market at $35,000, both the upside and the downside are evident, as shown in this report by Pulliam, Ramsey and Mullins of the WSJ. The reporters say the arrrangement of interconnected companies Solar City, Tesla, and SPace X through Musk's holdings and his personal loans to companies in difficulty such as Solar City- using his Tesla shares as collateral- is a risky business. This follows the way Valeant shares lost 14% in one day, as market perception changed. Venture capital companies such as Jurvetson with which Tesla has connections, and relatives, round up the ownership of these companies in a tightly knit arrangement with Musk as the key shareholder in an unconventional arrangement, says WSJ.
