Clarence a life long saver decides he will cut back on his expenses and save $588 from his $1912 monthly social security check for Tim. Tim has severe attention deficit disorder and works for $10 an hour in food prep at a resort....

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, son of the Saudi king Salman, oversees economic policy. He says stock sales of 5% of Saudi Aramco will be used to create a sovereign wealth fund of about $2 trillion that would help create the jobs with income from overseas investments and projects at home. About three times the jobs created in 2003-2013 will be needed with the demographic changes, according to McKinsey consultants. This will act as a diversification away from oil income dependence.

Panasonic CEO, Kazuhiro Tsuga, says the company is conducting a strategic review of 90 business areas in July 2012. He said Panasonic still has businesses that are losing money and about half of its businesses are providing less than 5% profit on revenues. He said the charges for the restructuring process could exceed the 41 billion yen target, because the company "will take the action we need to take." Steve Bannon is described in this indepth report by Scott Shane as a workaholic, born to working class family with his father a telephone line operator, who went to Virginia Tech and joined the Navy in the hope of advancing a career in politics. At Virginia Tech he won a leadership position of the student organization. He was described by another student who knew him well as passionate but not likely to get much done. The period at Virginia Tech and in the Navy were the Carter years followed by election of Ronald Reagan. The election of Reagan had a huge influence on Bannon- the same overtones of that campaign of Reagan are seen today in the forgotten men and women, white working class families that Conservatives then and Tea Party Conservatives in the Obama years felt ignored. The downward drift of the lower middle class families that saw incomes drop as manufacturing hollowed out in the U.S. with foreign competition, the failure of establishment politicians of both parties to protect American manufacturing and working class families, added to the sense of angst for Bannon. Bannon just like politicians in the Obama camp such as Emmanuel, found the way to politics through finance and gains made as the banking sector and financial institutions made huge financial gains by 2008. This was a stepping stone for their political ambitions. Emmanuel who is also a workaholic and passionate about his views worked to elect a black president, Bannon choosing to do the opposite and push for bringing back the Reagan era. Most on the liberal side see him as part of a racist movement. Reagan was none of those things. How does one reconcile the two? It is possible that seeing the fight against the established politics as an impossible task, Bannon in his passionate temperament did not object to the support of right wing extremists, in the same way that Trump did. As both Trump and Bannon have people of Jewish origin and black people in their circle of friends or family. What incensed Bannon as described here by Scott Shane of the NYT, was that after the financial crisis of 2008, hardly any bank executives who had committed wrongdoing went to jail, his father's line operator retirement savings were devastated by the financial crisis, and working class families struggled harder than ever, that his daughter at West Point was with mostly children of working class families who were the ones fighting America's wars. Many ironies abound in the story. Bannon got his business start in the same financial institutions that were involved in the financial crisis of 2008, Bannon & Co was acquired by Societe Generale. He is from an Irish Catholic working class family in Richmond and attended Benedictine High School, with a mother Doris that worked on the campaign to elect Douglas Wilder, a Democrat, as the first African American governor of Virgina.  The other ironies are in that Bannon sees Trump as "an imperfect vessel" but still good enough, and Trump sees himself as "making all the decisions" when asked about Bannon, as a range of interests struggle to form a coherent movement on the right in American politics- an unlikely combination of a telephone operator's son and real estate magnate's son who built his own real estate business in luxury real estate towers far removed from ordinary men and women they represent. ...

DW.com sees "back paddling" in Trump's latest foreign policy speech, replacing bigotry against immigrants with the idea of a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. with "extreme vetting" of new immigrants, including an ideological screening test. Trump it says repeated his claim that he opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, which it says is false. Trump's statement that he would reduce the current nation building strategy pursued under president Bush, it says doesn't make sense because the current situation in the Middle East ( rise of ISIS and chaos in Syria) arises from American retrenchment reversing in the opposite direction the policies of president George W. Bush. It is also true that Bush started his presidency with no intention of nation building, it was only after 9/11 that he adopted this policy. The elder Bush, George W. Bush's father, is reported to have said that his son as president was ill served by bad advisors in the invasion of Iraq over weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Obama's retrenchment has also led to differences in policy, with Leon Panetta and Hillary Clinton believing the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction, as shown in LyrArc's coverage. The speech was read using a teleprompter to avoid the frequent gaffes in previous speeches. Clearly an effort to make immigration and terrorism issues to win voter support, after previous efforts resembling bigotry and intolerance. ...

As the Nation debates immigration there is time to reflect on the anti-Asian immigration Act of 1924 that led to housing restrictions on where Asians and other minorities, and Black people could and could not stay. A Chinese farmer and gardener Lloyd Dong was able to find only one tlack family to rent to them in Coronado island near San Diego in 1939- Gus and Emma Thompson. 85 years later The Dong's (the son) are selling this Coronado home and donating two thirds about $5 million to a resource center for Black students at San Diego State University.

This election marks the end of the New Labor vision of a better life for an upwardly mobile middle class in an expanding market economy. It started with Tony Blair presenting his centrist post Thatcherite vision and ended in the storm that took over the British economy during the global financial crisis under the stewardship of Gordon Brown. An earlier generation also experienced something like this when Harold Macmillan, was the Conservative prime minister, and Britain experienced a post war economic surge which improved living standards for an earlier generation. The election results far from creating a new vision of Britain, put Britain in a muddle as one observer put it, with all parties short of a majority, and the Liberals ending up with fewer seats.

He says the the oil well spill is not about an equipment failure- the failure of a fail-safe blow-out preventor (BOP) failing. It really is about human failure, and BP should admit that it is a human failure. When the well failed its casing integrity test no action to correct this was taken. And the data collected about critical monitoring of hydrocarbon flows was left to sit there without any acton. He takes issue with BP CEO Tony Hayward's presentation of this disaster. In fact Terry Barr says, its a result of BP not following the industry's existing well-construction policies.

She played Lyubov, which means love, and led the journey across centuries of Russia's past with domes of St. Basil's Cathedral seen in the background. As much a celebration of Russia's past as a break from decades of stifling of individuality under communism.

Panasonic announced a third quarter loss of over $8.8 billion. New CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga says Panasonic will reduce manufacturing in Japan, cease selling mobile phones overseas and reduce investments in solar panels and rechargeable batteries. Tsuga told a news conference: "Unless we take this step, whatever we say will be an empty promise. That's how damaged our current situation is." Panasonic faces severe competition from Samsung which has larger investments in manufacturing, research and marketing of televisions and mobile phones. Panasonic share prices fell 19%.

This account in the WSJ shows how Masayoshi Son is making huge bets with money from Saudi, UAE borrowed at 7% interest, and his own and partners money. The first Vision Fund  which raised $100 billion was invested quickly over 2 years in startups in the U.S. with an uncertain future and the WSJ says it is unusual that a fund would pile up debt to invest in companies that are unproven and which cost the Fund billions of dollars a year in interest payments. Many of the people hired are not from venture capital and have backgrounds in speculative Wall Street deals, including Deutsche Bank, according to the WSJ. Critics say money invested in every pet walking or hotel renting website is not going to make healthy returns. Creditor are being paid back with money they lent, with interest at about $2 billion this year, according to this report.  Beyond the question of returns there is the larger question of how capital markets are malfunctioning today. Money badly needed for infrastructure and keeping up with technological developments such as 5G and new technologies, for research and development, and for vital public services in health and education to build strong societies, being diverted to highly speculative deals and dealmaking. ...
