Fiat plans to pay Chrysler $1.27 billon to increase its stake to 46%. This will happen after Chrysler refinances $7.1 billion in U.S. and Canadian debt to pay off government loans. A debt offering is expected in coming weeks. Fiat's Sergio Marchionne sees this as critical to the next step forward for Chrysler- the speedy approval of $3.5 billion or more in low interest loans from the U.S. Department of Energy for projects that increase fuel efficiency. Marchionne would like to leverage as much as he can from DOE as they will be essential to Chrysler's investments in improving the fuel efficiency of its vehicle lineup. Chrysler paid $1.2 billion in interest on its debt in 2010. Much or all of the $1.27 billion from Fiat will be used by Chrysler to reduce government debt. Chrysler will not use any unused funds from the government. Chrysler is also planning to add a revolving line of credit for $2 billion. By the end of 2011 Fiat will add another 5% stake to bring its stake up to 51%, and make it the majority owner. Fiat and Chrysler are operating as an integrated company. Marchionne says it makes little sense to have separate legal entities for Chrysler and Fiat, as the two companies are already developing, building and selling vehicles as one company. In the past the car's four wheel drive and performance in snow driving made it popular in states with winter snow conditions. Subaru is now making an effort to sell in southern and western states, appealing to customers who want higher fuel efficiency and improved safety. Subaru has 2.3% of the American market, but its sales are higher in a few states. with a 11% market share in Vermont. Subaru sales have grown rapidly and increased during the recession. Sales increased 41% between 2008-2010 with the popularity of a new version of the Outback wagon. In 2010 Subaru increased sales by 22% to 263,820 cars.

Manufacturing output showed brisk growth in the first quarter of 2011, growing at four times the estimated rate for the overall U.S. economy. The PNC Financial Group estimates growth for the first quarter for the overall economy at 2%. This growth is supported by exports to developing countries in Asia and Latin America with the help of a weaker dollar. American companies are also increasing investment in computers, machinery and other equipment. This has increased growth and profits for companies such as Intel, Caterpillar, Eaton, and United Technologies. Manufacturing in the U.S. is rebounding from the sharp drop in 2008-2009. During the first quarter it increased at an annual rate of 9.1% according to the Federal Reserve. In the second half of 2011 manufacturing is expected to slow to about 4%, according to Manufacturer's Alliance/MAPI. So far manufacturing has shrugged off concerns about oil prices approaching $110 a barrel and the earthquake in Japan. This growth has pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Averages to 12453, the highest close since June 2008....
