Vodafone is selling off the minority stakes it acquired in mobile phone operators around the world. This is part of the strategy of CEO Colao, to focus on growing businesses such as mobile data, and on focussing on offering a wider array of services in markets of Europe, India and Africa. Vodafone also owns 45% of Verizon Wireless, which has not paid dividends for 5 years as a result of debt.

Yahoo data for 500 million users was stolen in a hacking attack in 2014, Yahoo disclosed to the media. Experts are troubled by the fact that a Yahoo attack by a state sponsored actor in 2014 was only disclosed 2 years later. Even Verizon which plans to buy Yahoo says it did not know about this hacking attack that compromised 500 million user records, passwords and security questions. Verizon says it came to know about it September 20th about 2 days ago, and has limited idea about its impact. Yahoo says it came to know about this in summer 2016, when stolen data appeared in underground forums for sale. Yahoo upon further investigation discovered the large state sponsored attack in 2014.

T-Mobile USA lost 1.65 million contract customers in 2011 and is clearly negatively impacted by the merger plans. The $3 billion impairment in the value of T-Mobile outweighs the breakup fee received. The $4 billion investment for LTE upgrading will occur in 2013 and additional customers will be lost by then. This puts Verizon and AT&T ahead.

AT&T had 4.3 million iPhone activations in the first quarter of 2012, down 43% from the prior quarter. Of the most valuable subscribers who signed up for 2 years AT&T showed 187,000 additions. All but 7000 of these were in tablets. . This indicates that the smartphone market in the U.S. is being saturated. AT&T used the iPhone introduction in 2007 as a way to take subscribers from Verizon and Sprint. That advantage is now fading.

Vodafone has spent heavily in acquiring companies after selling its stake in Verizon Wireless in 2014. It faces tough competition in the price sensitive Indian market with some plans going for as little as $3 a month, and the offer of 6 month services for free by Mr. Ambani's carrier. In Nov. 2015 Vodafone took a 5 billion euro writeoff for its Indian operations.
