The BBC's 100th anniversary is in 2022. It started life as a private broadcasting company in November 1922 after radio receiver manufacturers including the inventor Marconi set it up so that the new radio receivers could be distributed to the public. The radio receivers were of no use without content put out by a broadcaster. Over time the BBC played a major role in the British Empire during the 1930's and 1940's and in the British Commonwealth. It assume its modern form after the Second World War.

For democracy to be effective people have to have a participatory role and have their voice heard. Mark Easton, Home Editor of the BBC, says this has not happened in the June parliamentary election. How is it that the result leaves Britain without an effective government, as Conservatives have only a 3 seat majority after joining with the DUP party in Ireland. The result a very fragile government. He asks how the election could be seen as providing people with a voice even though turnout had increased, when even after Labor increased its vote by 9.5% and Conservatives by 6% the Conservatives had to woo constantly the DUP party with a tiny fraction of 0.6% to form a government.

The Chief Correspondent of BBC News points out the dangers facing May and the British economy as the deadline of March approaches for invoking Article 50 to leave the EU and start negotiations. The possibilities of a "disorderly break" cannot be discounted, he says. There are many hurdles. The negotiations could get bogged down on the issue of settling outstanding obligations for which Britain owes 50-60 billion euros. Consumers will feel the effects of higher prices on their budgets as prices creep up. Already tech goods prices are reflecting the drop in value of the British pound. And the French right and former Gaullists have never concealed their views about Britain being on again and off again on the idea of Europe. The City of London, British business, and large parts of the Conservative Party do not favor Brexit, even the civil servants expected to implement it are skeptical, creating an additional layer of complexity and uncertainty and difficulty.Under a "disorderly break" Britain would revert back to the tariffs set under World Trade Organization arrangements. ...

Her Brothers of Italy party has links to 1930's Italy, which Meloni is attempting to transform into a modern version that speaks for mothers, the Catholics and Italy. Italy has seen 70 governments in a short period with a highly fragmented and changing political scene. The analysis in BBC says this government could last only as long as it retains the support of people as governments have changed so quickly in Italy. Her partners in her coalition Mr. Berlusconi and Mr. Salvini have also won and lost public opinion in different periods in the last decade.

His selection comes after the recent ethics problems at the BBC. The BBC is a major British institution with a 90 year history of providing news on world affairs. People forget how much the European Community meant to the two countries after decades of suffering under fascist dictatorships- it meant new hope and an opportunity to set things right. Problems facing the EU today include, the frustration at the carnage in Aleppo, Syria, how to deal with Britain and Brexit, setting up an asylum system that will work, dealing with Ukraine and Russia without making the situation worse, and remaining concerns about the Greece debt crisis. ...
