ACE Ltd will acquire Chubb Corp. for $28.3 billion in cash and stock to form one of the largest property casualty insurers in the world. Conditions in this part of the industry are creating a surge in M&A activity as the capital bases of these companies have grown as a result of smaller hurricane claims since 2012 from individuals and business. More competition is reducing prices in the industry and lower interest rates are reducing investment income. Chubb is a well known name based in New Jersey and a large provider of homeowners' insurance to affluent Americans. ACE is in the personal insurance business, and the 2 companies have significant operations in providing insurance to midsize business. ACE shareholders will own 70% of the new company which will assume the Chubb name worldwide. ACE is led by Evan Greenberg, son of Maurice "Hank" Greenberg of AIG. He worked at AIG for 25 years before joining ACE in 2001, becoming CEO in 2004 and chairman in 2007. He expanded ACE in overseas markets, and added more lines of coverage. The company will be based in ACE's location of Switzerland....

Sulzberger transformed and renewed the Times from what it was in the sixties before turning the paper over to management by his son in the nineties. The unexpected and rapid price drop in 2014 for ultra high definition UHDTV televisions. The price declines are driven by Chinese manufacturers who are using the large Chinese market and Chinese buyers eager to try out the latest technology to lower prices. NPD DisplaySearch estimates 2013 shipments of UHDTV's at 1.9 million units globally, of this 1.7 million were sold in China. Estimates for UHDTV for 2014 are 12.7 million units globally and China will be 78% of this. Sales in North America are estimated for 2014 at 800,000 units. The sales are surprising because there is hardly any UHDTV content available. Japanese makers use special chips that enable HDTV content to show improvement on UHDTV sets to justify higher prices. The price drops are steep- from $4503 to $973 to about one fourth in the Chinese market and from $18,667 to $1986 or about one ninth in the U.S. market for 2014. The price competition from Chinese manufacturers is likely to affect the profitability of Samsung, Sony and Panasonic in televisions....

A recent book has title Ikigai, on people with healthy bodies and minds well into their nineties. It pulls together information from persons in Okinawa, Japan, who passed one hundred years and they say not eating too much, eating plant foods, and community spirit, a passion for doing something worthwhile that you enjoy doing and do well referred to in Japanese as Ikigai, is a way to keep healthy. Other myth clarification- Sophie Egan offers is that soy based foods are good for us, and that plant protein when consumed in different forms can give complete nutrition. Not all fats are bad olive oil and seeds nuts are good for us, and white potatoes are also healthy eaten with the skin. All this adds up to good common sense without getting tied up into knots by too much attention to studies. ...

Kenyan politics is conducted along tribal lines since the country's independence in 1963. The Mau Mau rebellion under Jomo Kenyatta involved the Kikuyu tribe. Kikuyus at over 6 million are the largest tribe followed by the Kalenjins at about 5 million and the Luo tibe at about 4 million population. The Kenya African National Union Party of Jomo Kenyatta has run thecountry since independence. Kenyatta till 1978, followed by his vice president Daniel Arap Moi till 2002. Multi party politics since 1992 led to elections conducted purely on tribal lines, with the KANU appealing to Kikuyus, and Kenya Arican Democratic Union under Odinga appealing to Kalenjins. In this election Uhuru Kenyatta the son of the former president is running against Odinga of the KADU, son of the former Opposition leader. The government is also run on patronage with positions handed out to loyalists and tribe supporters. Former U.S. president Obama's Kenyan father could not find a position in Jomo Kenyatta's government because of tribal differences. After the clashes in 2007 with disputed elections the situation has led to further ethnic tensions.   ...

Sony's cheaper Bravia TV model$200 lees in price than its regular models was thought up in the US. Previously US engineers were not included in meetings for products being developed in Japan, so insular has been the outlook of Sony's Japanese engineers and managers. And the set itself was invented in Mexico using off the shelf parts. Katsumi Ihara who put the Sony Ericson venture together is now working to revive the Sony electronics business and one of the things he is doing is trying to change Sony's insular culture by having Japanese engineers visit San Diego and meet with their international counterparts to share ideas and solve problems.
