The transformation of Fiat Auto. Marchionne relying on "my kids", getting good people throughout the Fiat global operations and outside of a younger generation, who were open to doing things in a new way. He had the courage to unassumingly go about the business of remaking Fiat, by removing middle and upper managers who produced a kind of paralysis or sclerosis in Fiat, making change impossible after years of a failed culture embedding itself. And in their place he brought in an energetic courageous bunch of younger managers and designers. Marchionne saw his role as helping people reach decisions, setting stretch goals, and encouraging levels below him to take responsibility and make courageous decisions. He saw the Cinquicento as his version of the Apple iPod, and benchmarked Fiat against Apple, so he was looking outside the auto industry for people to emulate and for new ideas. Daimler takes a $3.4 billion charge for Chrysler. It sold 80% of Chrysler retaining 20% for $7.4 billion from Cerebus Capital. Daimler will take $1.5 billion out of a $2 billion lien loan neeeded to close the transaction because of the recent credit squeeze from the mortgage crisis. Zetsche emphasized the fact that after this transaction the return on investment on Chrysler does not affect overall profitability for Daimler as it has only 20% stake, and this appears to be the goal of Daimler from the beginning.

White drives a Chrysler 300 sedan diesel powered and made for European use, fast enough to go past speed limit but still gives an average of 28 miles in city and highway driving. The EPA rating for this car is 22 miles per gallon in its US V-6 model, so the Chrysler CRD 300 made for Europe has a 27% fuel efficiency advantage over its American counterpart. White borrowed it from a friend who was showing European diesel technology in the U.S. Cleaner diesel technology is spotlighted in this test drive. Also attention is drawn to fuel availability. This fall oil companies will be required to supply Americans at the gas pump with low sulfur diesel fuels on which the diesel cars with the clean diesel technology run, for cars like the Chrysler CRD 300. Automakers from Japan, Europe and the US are looking to transfer this technology developed for Europe to the US, with some improvements to meet American environmental standards, especially in lare sedans, SUV's and pickups. The statistics for US diesel use on the road are as follows: 1. About 3-4% of light vehicles in the US run on diesel. White quotes industry executives as comfortable with a JD Power estimate of diesel use by 2010-2012, or about 6-8 year horizon of 10% of all passenger vehicles. 2. John Moulton, president of the powertrain division of Robert Bosch Gmbh, forecast diesel use by 15% of the passenger vehicles in the U.S. by 2015. Use in Europe is about 50% by comparison. 3. Usage of diesel will be highest in the bigger cars and vehicles . This is where the 20-30% savings in fuel cost would be substantial enough to cover the $2000-$6000 additional cost for the diesel powered vehicles using the latest clean diesel technology. DaimlerChrysler is already moving forward with coming up with versions of the diesel models used in Europe for the American market. VW currently is the leader in the American market. About 20% of VW's sold in April 2006 use diesel. This is going up every year 12% in 2004, 14% in 2005. In 2008 VW will have all its mainstream models available in all 50 states in diesel versions. ...

Marketing campaigns in 2011 for the Toyota Siena, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Dodge Grand Caravan, Ford C-Max. Sales are up 42% for Honda Odyssey since October 2010, when 2011 models and campaign was introduced. The campaign has helped increase sales by 18.5% through November 2010, for Toyota's Siena. This is double the industry average for minivans and is a bright spot for Toyota, whose overall sales have been flat since the recalls. Toyota's Siena campaign shows rapping parents with kids in the back, making it cool to be seen in a minivan. Toyota's national marketing manager says the stories they heard were that people just did'nt want to be seen in a minivan, the soccer-mom joke or feeling playing a part in this. These ads hope to dispel that notion.

Metro Detroit has 90% of the 17,000 cases in Michigan as the pandemic reaches its peak there this week.  The large Detroit airport renovated and enlarged is seen as a source of the coronavirus as Detroit is where all 3 auto U.S. auto companies are located. GM, and Ford have large manufacturing operations in China, and  Chrysler has plants in northern Italy, the locations where coronavirus has hit hard, and in the case of China where it originated. Health experts say the busy Detroit international airport connecting the Detroit hub to other auto hubs in northern Italy and China- both virus hotspots- may have contributed to the virus hitting Detroit early. This country to country transmission along some route is how the virus has traveled to over 150 countries. For instance German reports show Bavaria as the source of the early cases in Italy's Lombardy region. It could be that German auto companies located in Bavaria with large operations in China resulted in inadvertent transmission of the virus from China through airport in Munich from flights between Germany and China. A Shenyang municipal bureau report provides information on German  investment in Shenyang, Liaoning province. Munich based BMW makes 1.3 million cars here. There is also the newly built Chinese German Tiexi industrial park in Shenyang with 50 German companies BASF, Siemens, located there.  Once the virus arrives in one location its spread depends on the environment with densely packed areas and the health conditions prevailing in a particular area playing their part. Both in New York and Detroit metro area this helped its faster spread in lower income densely packed areas.   ...

For the second time in two decades U.S. carmakers embrace SUV's with growing demand, moving away from passenger cars. The last time this happened in the decade before the financial crisis of 2008, automakers in the U.S. took a big hit when SUV sales collapsed, with GM and Chrysler heading into bankruptcy, and Ford in dire straits. This time increases in fuel economy and a more favorable economy are leading to higher demand for SUV's. In 2017 sedans, coupes and other passenger cars made up 37% of U.S. sales compared to 51% in 2012.  The Trump administration's move to lower fuel economies in a way poses new risks for U.S. automakers, as it is the very strong push for higher fuel economy and rapid improvements in the technologies that make this possible that have made the newer SUV's such as the Ford SUV line more attractive to buyers.  Historically the U.S. automakers have slipped badly on this issue and not managed it well as economic swings have completely reversed automakers profits. This mistake will be repeated without the automakers own push to drive demand in directions that cushion it from reversals in the economy with a broad based product line supported by new technologies. A look at Japanese car strategy shows a commitment to this concept of maintaining a borader based product line with new technology advances in each segment. David Leonhardt on the policy errors of the Obama administration in managing the economy. Why he asks did the Obama administration not take the risks it took for "undeserving" recipients in the auto industry to provide significant help to GM and Chrysler and at the same not provide large scale and situation changing help to millions of mortgage holders who were under water? The housing crisis with millons of foreclosures depressing home prices has played a significant part in the lagging economic recovery. He points out that Obama economic advisors had read Rogoff and Reinhart's book "This Time Its Different," about the longer times it takes for a economic recovery after a housing bubble, and still made the mistake of believing economists who suggested that the stimulus by itself would be sufficient and that recovery was underway in 2010. Kurczewski test drives aNano LX around the test drive track near the Tata Pimpri factory, and on city streets. He thinks the pickup is good for Indian city streets. The four speed manual transmission makes changing gears abreeze. The 0.6 liter engine is half the size of the Toyota Yaris or the Honda Fit. Acceleration is slow 30 seconds to reach 60mph, but in Indian traffic this works fine. Visibility is excellent. No exterior passenger side mirror, no radio, and luggage goes in from inside the car, all deisgned to keep costs down. THere is Airconditioning in the LX which accounts for half of Nano orders so far and goes for $3800. Three point safety belts, but no air bags. A Nano Europa with improvements to meet European safety and emission standards and air bags will be intorduced to Europe in 2011, and asimilar car also intoroduced to the USA by 2011 possibly at Chrysler-FIat dealers.

BMW lags Mercedes in return on sales its 6% vs Mercedes 8%. And it faces higher costs in meeting new EU emissions standards.Mercedes is doing a lot better now that it has gotten rid of the Chrysler distraction. One way is to develop new hybrid and other fuel economy and lower emissions technology in alliance with Daimler. Its developing a new hybrid engine with Daimler and GM of which a model was shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Improving profitability to have an 8%-10% return on sales by 2012 is the goal of BMW and it hopes to achieve this with a plan to create costs savings of 6 billion euros in a five yer plan announced by CEO Reithofer. in September 2007. This will mean thousands of layoffs and will mean that it will affect those with temporary contracts first and will include some buyouts also. BMW sales are growing and could reach 1.8 million by 2012.

Under the current bankruptcy settlement plan of Judge Rhodes bondholders would get $1 for every $5 and pension cuts for ununiformed workers would be about 30%. A library clerk for example could see a pension cut of $400 in a $1400 pension. Retired Detroit firefighters and police would see smaller cuts of 10%. The Detroit bankruptcy is being closely watched as other cities an local governments are facing similiar problems. As part of the plan $1.5 billion would be spent on reducing blight and improvements in the city. About 40% of Detroit streetlights are broken and police response time is about 1 hour. One reader says the unions sent companies to low cost regions and stuck Detroit with the bill. After the bankruptcy of GM and Chrysler the city shaw a sharp decline and many people left the city reducing its tax base and worsening urban blight. BMW's CEO Reithofer says in a conference call that the company will redirect cars from the USA to China and Russia and other countries because of the currency exchange rates and unfavorable market conditions in the US. These market conditions caused a236 million euros charge to compensate for the falling value of second hand vehicles and potential payment defaults on loans for leased vehicles in the USA. At Daimler you see a 491 million euro fall in the value of Daimler's remaining 19.9% stake in Chrysler LLC showing up in 1st quarter results but also similiar to BMW one sees a 151 million euro writedown to cover the falling value of cars that were leased to customers. Signs that the SUV based model for running car companies is cracking. A study from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute estimates that profits from large and midsize SUV's for GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler dropped 40% or $7 billion from 2001 to the end of 2004. These figures track a steady decline in profits from SUV's, as incentives are used to promote sales of SUV's, lowering the whole profit structure a big notch downwards. In 2001, this study found that the per vehicle profit was about $9500. In 2005 thanks to big discounts the margin on SUV's is about $6300. On midsize SUV's like the Ford Explorer or the Chevy TrailBlazer, margins are down even more to $4100 from $7200. Responding to this study GM looks at it differently, it sees declining sales as the main culprit not the margins. Its thinking goes like this- as long as we can keep sales up we can cover our fixed costs including costs to retirees which make up a big part of the picture And it looks at the variable profits which it finds to be much higher than the numbers put out by the Transportation Research Institute. ...

On November 17, 2008, as the Bush administration and Secretary Palson ponder their options including merging the 2 companies GM and Chrysler, firing old management and putting in new management, and someone to oversee the process of bankruptcy Chapter 11 with guaranatees such as debtor in possession financing and warranty guarantees by the government, and protections for the supplier base, so that an orderly bankruptcy takes place with clear goals of renegotiating terms with the unions, dealerships and debt holders. Under this process Chapter 7 liquidation would be clearly avoided and the process of recovery set in motion. Its interesting to note that Sorkin has outlined just how something like such Chapter 11 would work with all of the above steps taken. As the issue finally reaches closure with Secretary Paulson's decision expected at any time now its interesting to note Sorkin's comments about Wagoner's leadership saying that it was under Wagoner that the neglect of the things GM should have done ocurred and to think that he should be there running the company in this situation is laughable, yeas laughable. Something that echoes the public sentiment and expert opinion on this issue around the country....

JD Powers surveys now lowers the 2008 forecast of USA auto sales to 14.95 million from its previous one of 15.7 million. General Motors has not revised its forecast and is hoping for a second half rebound thats extemely unlikely given that the economic situation is deteriorating. Auto loan delinquencies are rising and expected are tighter curbs in auto loans lending practices which combined with higher oil prices, fewer new models to get customers interested, and the increasing layoffs, is likely to lower sales down more than the JD Powers estimate. Chrysler has lowered its sales forecast but sales have already dropped off significantly for Chrysler and its in the midst of a major revamping.

The auto industry has only itself to blame for shaping and sustaining the retrograde world it finds itself in, says Politico magazine. GM supported the Trump administration's efforts to push back the fuel efficiency rules setup earlier. With Chrysler and Ford it went a step further in getting out of cars altogether and having a line of SUV's and other vehicles. This step is seen as retrograde and a result of several possible lines of thought among the car executives in Detroit. One is that the SUV higher profits would provide a cushion as this cycle in the industry's revival comes to a close. Another is that in a situation where GM's shares are depressed while Tesla with no profits is seeing a higher valuation, this could increase its share price. This has not happened and President Trump is as critical of the layoffs of 15% and closure of plants in GM's announcement, as Democratic senator Bernie Sanders is. Still another is that GM needs to prepare for all the tech changes happening in driverless cars, new tech advances, that a move like this would better prepare itself for the new world of transportation. This remains nebulous however and GM has failed to take account of the fact that only a short time ago about half of all car buyers were still not buying SUV's. Gas prices are volatile and will continue to be so that strategy cannot be based on cheap gas prices and SUV profits.    ...
