Spain's newly elected prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, appointed Luis de Guindos, a former deputy finance minister in the governments of prime minister Jose Maria Aznar during 1996-2004, to be the new finance minister. Guindos is not a member of the governing Partido Popular, and is perceived as independent in Spain. A new Budget ministry was added, to be headed by the Partido Popular's economic spokesman, Cristobal Montoro. Montoro was formerly a budget minister in the Aznar government. Under a Swimming plan workers are cleaning up the river so that long distance swimming for the 2024 Olympics happens inside the river itself. During rainstorms 40 portholes dotting the river's paved banks gush with sewage. Some homes along the river dump sewage right into the river, industrial waste also is dumped into the river. It was not always so, in the 1900 Olympics 7 swimming events happened in the river. Swimming was banned in the river in 1923 and today it is murky, and seen as hazardous for swimming. Studies from the 1990's onwards showed it has one of the highest heavy metals in the world in the stretch running through Paris.

A piece of advice from her mother in law has served Ginsburg well all these years. She told Ginsburg "in every good marraige it helps sometimes to be a little deaf." Meaning that if an unkind word or thoughtless word is spoken to you best to tune it out and go on anyway. This helps in the workplace. Reacting to someone's unkind words will not advance one's ability to persuade. This is why people of all kinds of persuasion and opinions liked Ginsburg including at the court her complete opposite Justice Scalia. Something we can all learn from Ginsburg.

The Archbishop of Canterbury visits the scene of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. The action was taken by General Dyer in 1919 and aroused great deal of Indian sentiment against the British rule in India leading to the Independence movement under Gandhi. Dyer's troops blocked the narrow entrance to the garden and fired 1650 rounds into an unarmed crowd blocking all 5 exits. More than 1000 people were seriously wounded. A curfew prevented any help going to the injured.

This analysis by Mackintosh in WSJ points out that the low to negative interest  policy of the ECB has hurt savers, bank profits, and makes the ECB unpopular, yet it has shown tangible signs of success in creating jobs. This is true even though unemployment in the EU is still over 10% in some countries. He says that the unemployment is back to where it was in Nov. 1998 before the euro. There are 7.5 million jobs created in EU since beginning of 2014, the point at which ECB went to ultra low interest rates. This is above the 6.3 million created in the U.S. upto 1st quarter 2016. Big difference now is that companies and households are borrowing as rates fell. Inflation at 0.2% in August 2016 for EU is a weak spot, but considering where the EU was just 2-3 years before in 2013, the change is a largely positive one.

At one point Jobs gives Christie, the engineer leading the very small project team, 2 months to put it together or he would find someone else to do it. This is similiar to the way in which Sony's Morita approached his project team working on the Walkman telling them what he wanted to see and the size of the device. Jobs payed attention to all the details from how the phone names addresses appeared on the screen, dialing from the phone book, the swiping action to start the device, the music, and the colors on the screen. Only in on the project's detail were Bill Campbell, Apple director, and Jony Ive, Apple design chief. Christie was approached by Scott Forestall in late 2004 about this secret project codenamed "Purple." Christie is the engineer who joined Apple in 1996 to work on the Newton, and early touch screen device that failed because the technology was not developed enough at the time, making the device bulky and cumbersome. Christie was working on software for Mac computers in 2004. Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president for iPhone marketing, monitored other phone makers to see if they were coming up with a device that migrated the iPod's music features to the phone. The NYT says many of India's largest and most profitable companies are "relative models of probity," and several ranking among the world's best governed companies including companies in the software and pharmaceutical sectors. Large parts of the Indian economy have little appetite for the risk taken on by the Adani Group and are run on a financially conservative basis. Infrastructure is unique for this kind of risk taking because of decades of neglect of Indian infrastructure during the 1995-2015 period, when China was rapidly building infrastructure with large investments and India fell behind. It is that catchup mode that induced Adani Group's aggressive efforts taking on debt for outsize goals that it was willing to adopt for coal, solar and port logistics. As a result the Indian economy with companies such as Infosys and Dr. Reddy's Labs says the NYT, is largely not affected by the problems of the Adani group's debt structure.    ...

The civil war did not need to happen as Sri Lankan or Ceylonese communities of Buddhist and Hindu faith had coexisted under British rule from 1802, and coexisted under Portuguese and Dutch rule since 1505. The combination of civil war, corruption, and mismanagement of finances, as well as mismanagement of agriculture, has hit Sri Lanka hard. In economic terms the several political dynasties from the Senanayakes, Bandaranaikes, and Rajapaksas have not served the country well just as the Nehru political dynasty has failed to deliver the kind of economic progress that China was making in the period 1990-2010. That period will be remembered mostly for missed opportunities. Today Indian states are struggling to free themselves from the trap of low aspirations, corruption, political families, as India's young people realize how much is being lost. He is leader of the SPD and has a shot at chancellor in coming years. His hard work has led to increasing popularity during the pandemic and he is in charge of disbursing the euro recovery funds for recovery of Germany and the rest of Europe.  Being labor minister under chancellor Schroeder in 2003 did not help as he tried to sell Schroeder's labor reforms with harsh cuts for welfare recipients and he ended up looking like a bureaucrat and someone doing somebody else's work.  But hard work persistence in doing the work that mattered has helped him regain respect in Germany. On Social Security which FDR signed into law in 1935, he insisted that it be self-supporting, saying "no dole." Deficits of the "New Deal" Roosevelt would say were a result of the "emergency budgets." Only in 2 of the New Deal Years 1934 and 1936 did the federal deficit as a percentage of Gross National Product exceed the 4.6% of Herbert Hoover's last year in office. Rate of diabetes is rapidly going up in India. In addition scientists have shown that Indians are more prone to diabetes if they are obese to the same extent as someone from Canada or the U.S. This is called thin-fat diabetes- a higher impaired glucose intolerance- and comes from centuries of body changes following famine in parts of the country from failure of monsoon rains. The obesity rate is going up dramatically and with it diabetes is up significantly.  From 6.4% obese or overweight in 1990, by 2017 18.8% are obese or overweight, according to Health Metrics and Evaluation Institute of the University of Washington. The International Diabetes Federation now predicts 123 million with diabetes in India by 2040. By 2017 diabetes rates went up from 1990- from 5.5% to 7.7% or 63 million people. The major problem in South Asian countries and in China is the growing use of packaged and processed foods, fast food and carbonated drinks. Efforts to prevent the sale of junk foods is a battle being fought between private citizens and the large processed foods companies such as Coca Cola, Pepsi and Nestle. This is the subject of this article with Mr. Verma taking the case to the Delhi High Court facing large opposition. Mr. Verma left his job as a marketing executive as he took care of his sick child. He filed a case in the Delhi High Court in 2010, and faces the opposition of the India Food Processors Association- so far there is little progress.   ...

The Adani Group's public offering of $2.5 billion was slightly oversubscribed says the WSJ after a short seller in New York City Nathan Anderson issued a report critical of the company. Adani Group is a set of companies in India that have taken  up the ambitious goals of electrifying India with its population of 1.3 billion so that no home lacks an electric bulb light for children to read. It is under criticism because this means coal mines in Australia provide the coal that provides this electricity when coal is used in China and India to provide much needed electricity. Adani Group is unique in that it is making the rapid transition into renewable energy in line with PM Modi's goal of generating 50% of electricity from renewable energy by 2030.  Adani Total Gas Limited fell by 10%, Adani Green Energy and Adani Transmission made low percentage gains.   Thirty anchor investors provided $734 million including American banks.  This includes Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Life Insurance Corporation of India. Abu Dhabi based International Holding Company said it would buy $400 million in shares in a public show of support for the Adani Group. Adani Group will use the proceeds to fund capital expenditures on green energy projects, expressway construction and airport improvements and repay some debt. The building of India's Uttar Pradesh Expressway is being done by Adani Group which is similar to what happened under US president Eisenhower in the 1950's in building the first Interstate Highway system in the US. In 1953 after Dwight Eisenhower became president he developed the plan for a national Interstate Highway system that led to the passing of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. This is happening today in India. Airport and port improvements taken up by Adani Group help build India's woefully inadequate freight logistics to make it a part of the US new supply chain after the errors of overconcentration in one country China. Green energy projects help fight climate change where investments are badly needed and governments in the US and India are giving much needed direction and support. It is in this context that the huge growth of the Adani Group can be seen. It is not similar to the Tech company valuations simply because it is like China's effort under state owned companies to match the growing demand for electricity for industrialization. During the British Empire after 1800 capital from India financed the Napoleonic wars, industrialization of Britain, and indirectly industrialization of the United States through British capital invested in the US in the period before 1860. Capital that was diverted from India, and through British trade that impoverished China. As a result the growth in China after 1990, Korea after 1980 and India after 2014 comes in a catchup mode to meet the growing aspirations of hundreds of millions of young people with some companies state or private owned picking up the pace in an unprecedented way. This is the raison d'etre of the Adani Group. China's total installed capacity of electricity has increased from about 500 GW in 2005 to 2500 GW in 2021. This is the story repeating itself in India with Adani Group and other companies such as NTPC, State Grid and Tata Power setting over five fold increase. ...

June unemployment numbers will jump say experts at IHS Insight as GM and Chrysler downsize even more to become smaller companies with even less market share. This will reflect closing Pontiac and sale or closing of the other GM brands Saturn, Saab, and Hummer. It will reflect closing of more dealerships of GM and Chrysler. THis might be offset by a pickup in sales if something like the European trading clunkers for new cars program takes off in the USA. But with the US customers more in debt and with rising job losses, the pattern may be different in the US. It may only offer a small boost in sales. Manufacturing still matters in a recovery. In 1980 manufacturing was 20% of America's output, now it is 11.5% says Mark Zandl of Moody's Economy.com. Manufacturing, he says, has a bigger impact than its size suggests, because it responds quickly. As sales resume workers are called back to their jobs. The sharp V shaped recoveries in the early 80's reflected the rapid response of manufacturing. After the 1980's both the declines and the recoveries were shallow in 1990-1991 and 2001. Now with GM and Chrysler shrinking further under the government plan to fix these companies, and taking the supplier impact, the rebound leg of the V is missing. The kick from the Big Three and their suppliers is missing, says Nigel Gault of IHS Insight. Of the 5.7 million jobs lost from Jan 2008 to June 2009, 1.6 million were in manufacturing and 289,000 were in motor vehicles, split almost evenly between assemblers and supplier networks....

Lee Myung-Bak says Korea's experience with its banks and troubled assets in 1998 can provide useful guide to solving the problems at American banks. First take strong decisive action rather take incremental steps. Korea raised money from various sources for a fund of $127 billion, or 32% of GDP between 1997-2002, to resolve impaired assets and recapitalize its banks. Second, recapitalization and bad bank solution were both applied simultaneously. Korea setup the Korea Asset Mnagement Corporation (Kamco) as its bad bank. And the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation helped recapitalize the banks. Kamco also did things in a unique way which may have lessons for the USA. Kamco purchased the bad assets and settled the gains or losses with the banks once their assets recovered in value. It acquired assets at $30.9 billion, the book value which was $85.1 billion by 2002, and recovered $33.9 billion by 2008 by reselling to private investors through various methods including public auctions, direct sales, international tenders, securitization and debt-equity swaps. Lee points out that its useful fro government to purchase the impaired assets at a price agreed to with the banks , and make the final settlement of gains and losses with the banks after reselling. Another useful lesson for the US is to have a clear exit strategy with a clear time frame. This makes nationalization a temporary measure only and with a time frame by which shares held by the government in banks or nationalized failed banks, should be turned over to the private sector. The domestic market is declining as Japanese consumers spend even less than before. Household spending declined by 3.5% in February, as unemployment went up to 4.4%. This means recovery based on domestic demand picking up is not going to happen. Exports declined by 46% in February 2009. Even though policymakers are trying to revive the domestic market, Japanese companies are looking for innovative ways to increase exports. Panasonic is making products specifically for emerging markets like China and Vietnam. In cars the domestic market is weak as younger Japanese are not showing an interest in buying new cars. Sales have gone down by half from the peak reached in 1990, and an industry organization expects sales to go to the lowest since 1977. Toyota saw overseas sales double since 1998, but Japanese sales declined by 10%. Sales of beer are declining as Japanese are shifting to drinking wine, so Kirin came up with a cheaper beer flavored drink in 2005 that did away with malt altogether, bought a winemaker. It is expanding overseas with $1.26 billion to raise its stake in Philippines beermaker San Miguel, and $1 billion in National Foods, an Australian company. Japanese are also becoming poorer in a relative sense, with Japanese income per capita not in the top five, it is now 19th in the world. And as the nation's birthrate declines, companies that make diapers like Unicharm are making diapers for the elderly, and products for pets called litter sheets. And Unicharm is expanding its network in China from 300 cities to 500 cities, is targeting the 18 million babies born in China, as well as selling diapers in South East Asia....

Experts say entrepreneurs are seen negatively in Germany and a startup failure is likely to be seen as a problem in a resume. Yet many of the small companies with less than 50 million euros in sales were started in the early post war period decades before. These companies with less than 500 employees employ about 60% of German employees, showing their importance. Social Democrats Economics minister Sigmar Gabriel is promoting the idea of increased funding for startups by venture capital and private equity funds, by increasing tax breaks for startups. Germany's Federal Statistics Office figures show 87,000 new companies registered in 2014 through Novemeber, down 28% from the prior decade and 47% below 1996.

Ken Adelman, who headed arms control negotiations under Reagan with Russia under Gorbachev, says the Reykjavik summit in October 1986 between Reagan and Gorbachev was a failure because Reagan refused to give up the U.S. Strategic Defense Initiative. Months later Russia restarted arms control talks that led to 80% reduction in nuclear missiles and weapons. He says like Reykjavik the failed Trump Kim Jong-Un summit could lead to new talks with important results in denuclearization and normalization in the Korean peninsula. Both leaders Trump and Kim adore being in the spotlight and could return to continue talks he says. Failed talks are not always dead ends is the view expressed by Adelman.

Friedrich Merz quit Black Rock investment firm recently to head back into politics of the CDU. During the years after 2000 Merz was eclipsed by Angela Merkel for leadership of the CDU. He is known for jobs he has done in the finance sector including privatization of state bank WestLB.
