Analysts are predicting problems for Honda's plants in China stemming from wage increases. The wages of 500,000 yen per year for a worker in Honda's Chinese plants are double what is paid for a factory worker in India or 33% higher than in Thailand. For the Guangzhou plant to meet domestic demand it would have to have a 50-50 joint venture with a Chinese company, and this would mean getting government approval. For now that plant will remain an export hub. The entire plant -out of 4 Honda has in China- is committed to exporting the Jazz compact to Europe with production of 50,000 vehicles a year. Honda now owns 65% of the plant.

The less known role on July 25, 1947 of  Lord Mountbatten in getting the 550 Indian princely rulers to sign the Act of Accession to India is shown in The Indian Express. The British Empire was built from the British East India Company's acquired territories in India as the Company expanded in northern India and near the ports of Bombay, Madras and Calcutta with trading and using its army to protect regional states and monarchies. This happened from the period of the decline of the Afghanistan/Iran based dynasties in northern India called the Mughals from 1650 to 1756, and 1756 to 1857 with the decline of the Maharashtra based Maratha dynasty in two phases. The Empire left one third of India in the hands of princely rulers after a rebellion in 1857, with the British offering guarantees  of protection to these rulers.  The forming of and independent India under Gandhi, Patel and Nehru in 1947 led to the need to avoid a balkanized state and regionally disrupted India. It was Patel and V.P. Menon who accomplished the task of cajoling and pushing 550 princely rulers to join India including states as different as Mysore, Jodhpur and Baroda. Viceroy Mountbatten joined in this effort. Mountbatten is shown here on July 25, 1947, of dramatically playing around with around glass paperweight referring to it as a crystal ball that had answers to the queries of princes, and then suggesting with much tenacity- "sign the Act of Accession."   ...

Iran's government drastically cut subsidies for gasoline, electricity and basic food items. Gasoline prices were raised from 1,000 rials (about 10 cents) per liter to 4,000 rials. As a result gasoline consumption is down 14% in early January from the prior month. Use of public transport is up 20%. Fares for Tehran's buses and subway went up by 20%, far less than the price increase for gasoline. The government introduced a $40 per person monthly stipend to soften the impact especially for poor families. Iranians are gradually tightening their belts and adjusting to the price increases, reducing wasteful energy use. Iranians have one of the highest rates of wasteful energy consumption in the world, according to IMF. This is because Iran has so far provided generous subsidies, covering 80% of the cost of energy and basic food items. President Ahmadinejad has introduced the Smart Subsidy Plan which calls for a gradual five year phaseout. These cuts will save $100 billion a year, according to government estimates, and is supported by the IMF. Iran is rigorously monitoring price increases in retail stores to ensure that retailers are not passing on the increases to customers. Trucking and transport businesses are allowed to raise their fees by only 15% to cover rising costs including the 837% fuel price increase....

Ami Ayalon, a former director of Israel's Security Agency (Shin Bet), proposes that Netanyahu take the small tangible steps in the direction of a two state solution for Palestine. He says this would lay the groundwork for reduction in tensions in the Middle East by aligning Saudi Arabia and other Sunni States, Turkey, Israel and the U.S., towards a lasting settlement. Ayalon refers to two changes in the Middle East that others have observed- the street is exercizing major influence on events in the Middle East and this presents an opportunity to defuse a lasting irritant in the form of treatment of Palestinians. The Iranian Shiite influence in Iran and Iraq provides Sunni and other Muslim states an incentive for serious and lasting settlement of the differences with Israel. These are two influences that present opportunities to move forward, says Ayalon. Adding that if Netanyahu fails to grasp this and make serious moves in negotiations, Israelis should vote him out of office. The move he is calling for is for Israel to declare it has no sovereignty claims over areas east of the security fence built in the West Bank. A voluntary evacuation and compensation would take place and settlers who stay would have some form of assured status under the agreement. The Israel Defense Force would remain in the area till a firm agreement with guarantees is put in place....

Russian and China sign a contract for Russian natural gas from undeveloped fields in Siberia during Putin's visit to Beijing in May 2014. The 30 year contract is for about $400 billion. China gets natural gas at prices about 25-40% below the current cost of importing liquefied natural gas from Australia, Qatar, Malaysia and other countries, according to RBC Capital Markets. For the last decade China and Russia have failed to agree on a price. In these negotiations a price was reached but is being kept a commercial secret. China imports large amounts of natural gas by pipeline from Turkmenistan at about $10 per million British Thermal Units (BTU's). Gazprom needs about $12 per million BTU's to break even. The two Siberian fields are the Kovykta field and Chayanda field which would remain undeveloped without the deal to supply China. Russia will spend about $55 billion for pipelines and infrastructure on its side, and China $20 billion. China's needs for natural gas were 170 billion cubic metres in 2013, growing to about six times consumption of about 30 billion cubic metres in 2000, according to China's NDRC. This is expected to reach 420 billion cubic metres by 2020. Currently 17.7 million metric tons come by pipeline mostly from Turkmenistan and 15.5 million metric tons of LNG mostly from Qatar and Australia, according to China General Customs Administration. The deal will put on hold higher cost LNG projects for Asian countries and make mores gas available at reduced prices in Asia, according to analysts....

Sheila Bair gets credit for anticipating the banking crisis and gets credit from people in the Bush Administration like Robert Steel Undersecretary at Treasury till recently for a comprehensive approach to the banking and credit and mortgage crisis. Steel says that the Bush administration first relied on a case by case approach and only later came around to Sheila Bair's comprehensive approach which also underpins the recent legislation passed by Congress to tackle the mortgage crisis. She has advocated better terms for borrowers as the best approach for lenders and borrowers and the banks and for the economy which has not been favored by the banking industry and lenders aseach group followed its own vested interest seeing only the immediate short run and failing to grasp the full extent of the crisis. Sheila Bair has taught public policy at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and also worked for the Bush administration at Treasury and in other capacities till her appointment to lead the FDIC. She also oversees the IndyMac bank as the FDIC took over that failed bank recently. She has over 100 banks at risk on her watch list and sees more fialures of banks ahead and the worst of the credit crisis still ahead of us when she says in this interview that " we have not seen the trough of the credit cycle yet", and referring to the hard headed work with a lot of work and not enough staff of examiners that " its going to be a slog to work through this."...

Bridgewater Associates estimate of the cost of the TARP (Troubled Assets Rescue Program) that Treasury is initiating and should have the legislation in place this week, "could reach $2 trillion". Other problems on the horizon. Psychologically a collapse of additional investment banks like Goldman or Morgan Stanley or of smaller midsize banks could rattle nerves over the next few months. Manhattan College finance professor Charles Geisst says "I don't think Goldman and Morgan Stanley could survive too many rounds of this." And BW says it sees a world without Goldman and Stanley as quite conceivable. Where are problems shifting to in the horizon for 2009? The socalled Alt A loans pose a real problem as default rates there approach 15% and it involves larger loan numbers than subprime, and the default rate is rising on prime mortgages with higher unemployment and weaker economic conditions. So the next area of serious danger to the economy will be the difficult economic conditions from tight credit, declines in consumption spending, declining production and higher unemployment, and defaults on corporate loans. These declines affect Chinese exports and would affect China's ability to take in higher US exports of capital goods and advanced machinery as China's growth rate slows even down to as low as 5% in a global slowdown of consumption and international trade. This is where the attention will turn to as we get into 2009. And riding out the storm will mean riding out these economic conditions after and alongside TARP....

This would give financial institutions in China time to adapt to the new situation. Toyota plans to spend $1 billion on a marketing and advertising plan, spending that is 30-40% more than normal, to ramp up production and fill out inventory. It includes money to subsidize lease and loan rates, customer incentives and dealer ads. One aim is to raise the projected resale value of its vehicles used in calculating montly lease payments. Akio Toyoda is also giving more decisionmaking power to local executives for the markets they are more familiar with.

Intel and the Federal Trade Commission plan to settle an anti-trust case. This will require Intel to change monopolistic practices in the microprocessor market. One of the ways Intel has tried to fend off competitors like AMD is by offering rebates to HP, Dell, and Acer. In a private settlement Intel paid $1.25 billion to AMD in November 2009. It paid a $1.45 billion fine to the EU after a ruling against Intel for such practices.

Matsushita Electric is streamlining operations after the acquisition of Sanyo Electric and Panasonic Electric Works in 2011. Restructuring is also taking place to compete with South Korean and Chinese manufacturers, and to focus on emerging markets. The restructuring will mean 17,000 job cuts over the next 2 years. The yen has appreciated 25% against the dollar since 2008, and the Korean won has depreciated by 35% during this period, making it tougher for Japanese manufacturers to compete.

This has weakened the administration of president Ma Ying-jeou, and turned it into a lame duck administration till presidential elections in 2016. Innovation Network Corporation of Japan will invest 140 billion yen in Renesas and take a two thirds stake in the company. This is an effort to restore and strengthen Japan's semiconductor industry. Renesas has struggled to cope with falling chip prices and the effects of the tsunami. The company posted a loss of 150 billion yen for the year ending March 2012. Renesas was formed in 2003 by merging the chipmaking operations of Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric and NEC Corp.

Acer President Gianfranco Lani says the company will ship between 10 million and 12 million netbooks in 2009, and 32 million to 35 million laptops including netbooks, which suggests that netbooks which sell for as low as $200 are almost half of its laptop/netbook sales. A 50 foot marble statue was placed at the canopy near India Gate of King George V in 1936, by Edwin Lutyens, in an irony of history only 11 years before independent India emerged out of the British Empire in India. It was not removed till 1968 and no decision was made on what should replace it until 2022. Today the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose now stands at that place, Bose led the Indian Army's fight for independence from territory freed by the Japanese after Gandhi adopted Quit India in 1942 and most of the Indian leaders were arrested and Netaji escaped to East Asia. Part of the reason Netaji and patriots who fought to free India through means other than non violent protest were not seen as having made significant contribution was the sense that the Japanese invasion of China had shown it was another colonial power. However without the Japanese weakening British rule in Asian countries the British may have continued their rule in India. After the Japanese had proved the British, Dutch and French empires could be removed from Asia, the process that began with Naoroji, Tilak and Gokhale, and continued by Gandhi, Bose, Nehru and  Patel working together  seemed inevitably headed for success. Seen in this way a genuine understanding of Hind Swaraj can be gained. Mohandas Gandhi points this out in Hind Swaraj by saying that Gokhale was the true leader of independent India. In the true sense of genuine struggle the leaders and unknown soldiers who were jailed in the Andaman islands made significant contributions including Tilak. The struggle for Hind Swaraj was done by people who took the largest risks, and who weighed the future carefully. And this includes Gandhi and Bose,Tilak and Gokhale, and most of all the unknown people who were at the Salt March and Quit India movements.   ...

The Opinion given by the US Supreme Court shows the thinking behind its decision to call Affirmative Action or race based admissions by colleges unconstitutional, as violating the Fourteenth Amendment Equal Protection Clause. Because the respondents (Harvard College) use of race involves stereotyping and negative criteria the Court declared it invalidated. "It unduly harms non-minority interests," not permissible when all citizens are equal regardless of race or color. Proposed by Congress and ratified by the States the Fourteenth Amendment provides that no State shall "deny to any person.... the equal protection of the laws." Proponents of that law describing as the "foundational principle" as "not permitting any distinctions of law based on race or color." As WSJ shows today there are three times as many White as Black or Hispanic families in California making below $50,000 a year.  "That the law shall be the same for the black as well as the white, that all persons shall stand equal before the laws of the States." It was a blot on the face of America that this allowed racially segregated schools till this was changed, says the Supreme Court. It calls the Bakke decision to allow race based admissions as a deeply splintered decision and Judge Powell writing for himself allowed it only to allow the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body. The decisions in Grutter stated that in 25 years this race based admissions should end and in no way can it be used for stereotyping or as a negative- to discriminate against those racial groups that were not the beneficiaries of the preference. A university's use of race could not be used to "unduly harm non-minority interests." It also means engaging in stereotyping- "a demeaning assumption that students of a particular race think alike."  ...

As Russia makes gains in the whole Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine the UK approves use of its long range missiles inside Russia. Biden is on the verge of making a similar decision as Iran sends long range ballistic missiles to Russia according to reports in NYT. Use of American long range missiles is not expected to affect Russia's overall military position in the Donetsk region in the east. The US and president Biden has only reluctantly provided support for use of US weapons systems to not risk escalating the war. Even artillery on the Russian side was off the list of approved use till Russia used it in Kharkiv border region at which point it was approved. Russians see Kiev as the origin of the Russian State in the 1400's, and eastern region of Donetsk as Russian if western Ukraine seeks to join NATO and EU. Britain has opposed Russia since 1750 as it saw Russia as the threat to an Empire it was building in South Asia, in India that financially supported its Empire worldwide. Britain has a long history of engaging Russia in conflict to protect British trade interests and expand its imperial influence as in the Crimean War fought in 1850's against Russia with the French to gain control of the Ottoman Empire and its Arab states for its trade and imperial interests. Republicans other than Mr. Trump and his supporters are for stronger support to Ukraine following US policy of opposing invasion to achieve military goals since 1900 against the Japanese in China and the Vietnam War was fought on the same basis in the 1960's considering the South Vietnamese state as an independent republic, just  invaded by the north, by North Vietnam, just as the US had done in the Korean War between North and South Korea. In the Vietnam War nationalism played apart with the Vietnamese nationalism prevailing by 1970.   ...

Indian PM Modi will take part in the swearing in of a new government in Maharashtra on December 5, 2024. Maharashtra and Gujarat with cities Mumbai and Ahmedabad were part of Bombay state in 1947 after independence. It was also the largest trade and industrial region of India. Today it is poised under the Modi government to deliver industrialization on a scale that matches that of China for a modern Vikshit Bharat over the next decade and to 2040.
