Japan's 38 year old Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi sets himself up as a role model by taking two weeks off as paternity leave over 3 months after the birth of his first child.  Mr. Koizumi says in a country where paternity leave is not common: "I hope my child care leave will serve as a spur for everyone in the Environment Ministry to take child care leave without hesitation and advance a style of work in which that is easy." Japan's Shinzo Abe government encourages men to take childcare leave, as this is part of the campaign to get more working age mothers into the workplace. In Japan eligible employees can take upto 52 weeks off of parental leave at reduced pay, accordoing to OECD. The government hopes to get 13% of fathers to take paternity leave in 2020, compared to only 6% in 2019. A riverside project on the banks of the Sabarmati in Ahmedabad gives the city of 10 million a new look. The project is similar to ones on the Thames in London and Seine in Paris bringing new park space and areas for of public space for a rapidly growing city. Guardian Cities is looking at 15 new cities with population growing to exceed 10 million by 2035- from Tehran, Iran, to Luanda, Mozambique, Hyderabad, India, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Surat, India, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Chengdu, China, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The way this was done was to develop a self financing model. This was the work of architect Bimal Patel who proposed selling 14% of riverfront land of 200 hectares to recover costs. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation spent 161 million dollars to build new housing for 11,000 displaced families who worked in squatter type housing on the riverbanks as domestic workers, clothes washers. The riverbed had become for decades a dumping ground for city waste. The goals were to provide access for public to the river front and clean up the water with water treatment plants. Bimal Patel calls the project one of three generations as  will take another three years for new water treatment plants. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation bears the cost of about $220 million. The famous Sabarmati Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi lies along this riverfront and it gives this sacred space in India's history, the home of Mahatma Gandhi for many years in the struggle for independence, a healthier, brightened space along the river. ...

Cinda's bank borrowing has increased from 7.8 billion yuan in 2010 to 161 billion yuan in Oct 2013, with three fourths of this having a maturity of less than 2 years. In contrast to China's three largest banks which have 25-30% of loans in real estate, Cinda's assets are about 50% in real estate, increasing from 25% in 2010. This has increased the risks from Cinda in China's banking system. Cinda was originally setup to buy nonperforming loans from China's banks in 1999, but was never closed. It now operates along commercial lines with support from China's Ministry of Finance. The balance sheet has jumped 88% to 283 billion yuan or $46.6 billion in the 30 months ending in June 2013.

Mercedes Benz is pushing sales of its newly designed small cars as part of a strategy to attract younger buyers. A retooled, sleek version of the B Class compact is part of this strategy. The average age of U.S. Mercedes buyers is 53 years, compared to 49 years for Audi and BMW. Smaller cars are also part of the strategy to meet the new fuel economy standards in the U.S. and Europe. Mercedes is investing $1.9 billion in a new Hungarian plant and expanded German capacity to build smaller cars and SUV's. Sales of the smaller size A and B class Mercedes cars increased slightly by 1.4% to 222,400 in 2010. This compares with increase in overall sales volume up by 12% to 1.26 million cars in 2010.

Job prospects for college graduates in 2011 are showing significant improvement from the previous year. About 19% more graduates will be hired in 2011 compared to 2010, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. For college seniors, the survey shows 41% having an offer in 2011 compared to 38% in 2010. But the situation remains difficult for students who graduated in 2009 and 2010. Ernst & Young hired 2800 graduates in 2011- up 22% from 2010. The jobless rate for college graduates in the age group 20-24 is 6.4% in April 2011, coming down from 7.1% in the prior year, according to the Labor Department. In April 2007 the unemployment rate was 3.5%. The situation is uneven, with better prospects for graduates in computer science, engineering, accounting and economics, and most of the jobs in the private sector.

Tesla suffered from production issues in 2017 and CEO Musk was not his usual upbeat self.  In early 2018 Musk is back to his usual style predicting big things for Tesla. Just after his company Space Exploration Technologies sent a powerful rocket with a Tesla car into space,Musk predicted making one million vehicles a year in 2020. In 3 months he says a Tesla will cross the U.S. He says Tesla will now be able to make 5000 cars a week of the Model 3.

Another of his predictions is that he will revolutionize production systems and leap over existing car companies. Analysts asked Musk if the Toyota Production System had not already achieved that, Musk says "we don't think so." Vanguard's Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis, says there is a 40% chance of a recession in the U.S. by 2020, and that the prospects for the stock market have worsened quite a bit. U.S. stocks are expected to return 3.9% down from the earlier prediction of 8% in 2013 over 10 years annualized. In Europe the stocks are expected to return 6.5% down from 8.7% earlier prediction in 2013.

Bonds and cash offer safer alternatives with attractive rates.

Vanguard's 10 year annualized returns for a diversified portfolio of U.S. bonds is up from 1.7% in 2013 to 3.3%, for Treasury bonds 3.0%, and for international bonds up from 1.8% to 2.9%. Money market funds also offer relatively attractive returns as safe haven on 10 year annualized basis of 2.9% up from 1.5%. For the lower risk money market funds are attractive to investors for making adjustments.

Negotiators for Climate Change talks meeting in Katowice, Poland helped develop a rule book to support efforts made for the Paris Accords. The U.S. joined the European Union, Canada and China in putting forward compromise language. 

The question of setting up a carbon market was put off for the future.

On the aid to developing countries to reduce emissions in their generation of power the commitment of $100 billion by 2020 from Article 9 of the Paris Accords was seen by some countries including the U.S. as too high. China does not contribute, and only the European Union with Germany doubling its contribution took the lead. That climate fund has so far raised $10 billion.

The U.S. point of view was that no country should sacrifice economic prosperity and energy security for environmental sustainabililty. Yet the U.S. has participating in developing the rule book for climate change efforts stemming from the Paris Accords.

The southern Spanish city of Seville collects 5.6 million kilos of oranges deposited on city streets by 48,000 trees. Thirty nine tons of oranges are picked up from the streets by 200 workers and used in a pilot scheme to produce clean electricity.
