A unit of Russian JSC Russian Railways signs a contract with China Railway Group for the design of the 770 kilometer high speed rail connection between Moscow and Kazan, in June 2015. The cost is $383 million. The actual construction link will cost $19.5 billion. Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin says the construction contract will go to the bidders who can provide the best financing. Chinese banks have signed agreements in 2015 to provide $25 billion in financing for Russian companies. China is keen on using its high speed rail technology to expand in other countries and this contract is being pursued vigorously by Chinese companies.

According to analysts Yahoo's 24% stake in Alibaba and its stake in Yahoo Japan is what gives its share price momentum. U.S. Yahoo operations are estimated by Topeka Capital Markets to provide only about $10 of Yahoo's value per share. Alibaba's operations as a retailer in China account for $30 of the value per share, and Yahoo Japan $7 per share in value. Yahoo's current share price in Jan 214 is $40, having doubled in the past year. The authors are Daniel Alpert, managing partner of Westwood Capital, Robert Hockett, professor of financial law at Cornell University and a consultant to the New York Federal Reserve, and Nouriel Roubini, professor at New York University. Its title is: "The Way Forward: Moving from a Post-Bubble, Post-Bust Economy to Renewed Growth and Competitiveness." The authors say the current crisis requires more than the conventional solutions. They suggest a major infrastructure building program, restructuring the mortgage debt of ordinary Americans with bridge loans, reductions in principal and other solutions, and rebalancing the global economy.

One of the key provisions of the new credit card bill, is that no credit cards can be issued to anyone under 21, unless a parent or legal guardian or spouse is the primary cardholder. THis way credit card companies cannot issue card to students under the age of 21 who might thn get into debt, unless aparent is aco-signer and becomes the primary cardholder, or the student shows own income and gets a waiver. And any increase in the credit line can only be made with the writtten permission of the parent. This and other changes in the bill were long overdue in the USA.

Novartis bought form Nestle SA a 25% stake in Alcon for $11 billion with an option to buy Nestles's remaining 52% holding in 2010 and combine its eye care operations with Alcon's. But there is uncertainty about how this will work out and at what price Nestle will sell as share price of Alcon has dropped. This leaves Novartis in a bind when it comes to other acquisitions as it has to raise and set aside capital to complete the Alcon acquisition. Novartis raised $5.5 billion in debt in February 2009, and $2.2 billion in a bond sale in June, and will raise more capital.

The deep cuts in Chrysler's engineering staf, with 40% of the engineering staff gone under Daimler and Cerberus, is hsowing up at job fairs. Jim Badhorn was a Chrysler engineer for 21 years before he took the buyout. He designed the rear doors of the Chrysler 300 sedan. Badhorn put much of the $75,000 into acollege fund for his 2 daughters. He hits the gym everyday. He is arenter so his home in Birminghan isn't like the other owners who have lost 40% of their home value. And he can't even find the end of the job line when he goes to a job fair for a military contractor.

IBM is one of the companies that have stated publicly its intention of investing in its people while other companies are cutting back, but a reality check shows that IBM is quietly conducting its own layoffs. IBM reported strong quarterly profits in January, but announced layoffs of 1400 people in its sales and distribution division the day after CEO Palmisano reassured employees in an email message. In many of these smaller scattered layoffs there is very little notice to employees. IBM has cut back employment in the US which is at 115,000 employees and expanded overseas which is closer to 300,000 employees, see the graph.

Krugman says that America has lost credibility with the Europeans just when it needs it most. When it is doing some of the right things and asking the Europeans to likewise give alarge stimulus to their economies. But now the Europeans looking at how the American financial system has lacked the very supervision and the transparency that it lectured other countries about during the Asian financial crisis of 1998, are in no mood to be lectured by the Americans. So one of the things that was most troubling about the Great Depression, the lack of cooperation between countries, is still happening today, as Krugman sees it.

Close touch and eye to eye retailing across as many cities as possible through a large as possible retailing network is the way the Chinese and Indian market is described. But HP which lags Lenovo in China is the leading computer seller in India so there may be other things and factors at work. Still the markets in poor developing countries are going to be quite different in cultural and regional makeup and their needs may be quite different in what is most important to customers and what companies must do to respond to these needs to get established.

Andrew Witty, a 43 year old Briton, is taking over as CEO of GlaxoSmithKline. Before this he was in charge of European operations. His first moves include strengthening Glaxo's presence in the emerging markets of Russia, India and China. He has put new managers in charge of these efforts. He sees more opportunities to sell consumer health products in India and other emerging markets where people buy most of their medicines over the counter. He also hopes to make new pricing deals with insurers and governments to persuade them about linking the price of the drugs to how effective they are in treating patients.

India's response says Amitav Ghosh is better being like the Spanish response to the Madrid bombings 11-M as it is known in Spanish, than the American response to 9/11. The American response was military buildup and the invasion of Afgahnistan and then Iraq. The Spanish response was says Ghosh was of vigilance, patience and careful police work in coordination with neighboring countries. And in the case of India the added effort to eliminate the terrorists hideouts and safe houses in cooperatation with other countries. Iran War and rescue of pilot of downed F15-E in mountainous terrain in southern Iran April 4 2026. CSAR or Search and Rescue Missions become a critical part of the war. The pilot was a colonel trained for the mission and spent 24 hours in mountainous terrain which was monitored by US forces, after intelligence located him in a mountain crevice. For this to be possible unlike in the Vietnam War and Korean War other nations are not involved as in the earlier Cold War.  The US under DJT as president has shifted to respecting Russia as a Northern European power that it can talk with (meetings with Putin in Alaska 2025) and China as a trade partner (planned meeting in Beijing in April 2026) that it can talk with unlike with previous administrations of Biden, Obama and Bush where China had afree hand in economic matters and global trade and Russia was shut out of the world economic system by elites who ran the government in the US at that time. Russia seeks reintegration in the world political and economic systems, and China seeks acceptance as an economic power which the US respects, both points in which the US has offered to accept. US has also repeated the line to China that it was not going to do the job of keeping Hormuz open for China and Japan to get 90% of oil imports, and in oding so risk losing its soldier's lives, while China and Japan can quietly watch doing nothing to help free navigation of international waters. Note that the narrowest strip of water of 13 miles separates Oman from Iran so that a part of these waters are on the Omani side and not on the Iranian side making free use of that Omani part under international law possible- in which sense Iranian hostile activity closing the Omani side also is a violation of free navigation. This is not pointed out by Iran or Japan or even Britain who are benefitting from US action and remaining silent or being ambivalent or accusing US of being interventionist even when everyone knows MAGA base rejected Bush in the Republican party and the elites and embraced DJT for great part because they want nothing to do with interventionist adventures in the Middle East for certain. US is getting a bum rap from European allies and from China, India, Japan and the media inside the US and in those countries as if the US seeks oil from the Middle East. It was Britain where a lot of the posturing goes on about non intervention that started this oil based intervention since 1900 in Iran itself, and in artificial states of Iraq, Syria, that it created out of the collapsed Ottoman Empire in World War 1. Sykes and Picot were the US and French diplomats who set that up. US under DJT has accomplished self sufficiency in oil and US has no need for anything from the Middle East, no desire to even get involved, and MAGA well grasps that fact and wants to keep it that way. Only nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles with long range to hit US and EU are reason for US action, which is reason enough for EU, China, Russia to set their own goals so that non proliferation in dangerous areas is prevented. So that the people of China, Russia, India, Europe and the rest of the world can enjoy the fruits of their own labors after a century of severe hardships and struggles which the American people if not their elites respect, and the fruits of peaceful cooperation which the American people extend to the World, and to China, Russia and India. ...

The Freedom Party with anti-immigration position gets 28% of the vote with centrist People's Party which is said to have handled the recent floods well at 26%, and the Social Democrats at 21%. This leaves the only prospect of a government of the Centrist parties with the Social Democrats. It also shows that Socialist party leader Mette Frederiksen, prime minister of Denmark since 2019, is right that immigration simply distracts from important economic issues of cost of living and wages for workers and families, that immigration should be stopped so that other important issues for working class families can be addressed.This is also the view of Labour Party leader Keir Starmer in Britain and of Biden-Harris in the US who want to see the Republican Lankford legislation closing the Border passed and which Harris promises to have it brought to her desk to sign.

This may be one of the best responses at the confirmation hearings on an important topic of climate. Watch Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in confirmation hearings with Le Zeldin for EPA Administrator. Lee Zeldin said "climate change is real," and DJT was talking in "the context of the economic cost of some policies where there is a debate and a difference of opinion among parties."

In responding to Senators Lee Zeldin promised cooperation with a bipartisan spirit to tackle climate change, talk to other countries including China about climate change action, and work with individual states including Alaska and Utah which have clean water and air concerns. His demeanor and responses were calm and collected and expressed a desire to fulfill the hopes of most of the Committee Democrats and Republicans through actions of the EPA on climate and the environment.

Francois Bayrou the new PM of France speaks a dialect of the Pyrenees mountains, is mayor of Pau, and was a school teacher before entering politics. He has a disdain for extreme positions on both sides left and right, including polarizing politics of Sarkozy. He gave key support to Macron at the right time when he needed it to run for president. He gets along well with Le Pen and has helped Marie Le Pen run for president in the past when she needed support because he felt this was essential for the democratic process. He was not the first choice of Macron and insisted on taking the job over other choices.

Funding for US colleges decreases, fewer high school students graduate in 2025. Fewer foreign students. All this is affecting American colleges. For two decades American colleges allowed tution to get out of control making it unaffordable for a middle class that was already hit by the American leaders who allowed America's industrial base to be shipped out to China. As factory towns dwindled in importance and worker jobs and incomes declined across the length and breadth of America, universities and colleges took little responsibility even as young men opted to not go to college. Tution fees kept rising requiring loans that could not be paid off. Today the rust belt is coming to these colleges as the DJT administration has decided to give low priority to funding these colleges and universities and new career paths are being created through apprenticeships and other vocational education.

Court blocks deportation of a group of Venezuelans on the basis of Alien Enemies Act of 1798, says other remedies can be tried. The Court of Appeals of the Fifth Circuit is based in New Orleans with 3 Judges making the decision. Bush appointee Southwick joined Biden appointee Ramirez against Trump appointee Oldham in a 2-1 decision. Oldham in a 131 page dissent says-“Today the majority holds that President Trump is just an ordinary civil litigant. His declaration of a predatory incursion is not conclusive. Far from it. Rather, President Trump must plead sufficient facts — as if he were some run-of-the-mill plaintiff in a breach-of-contract case — to convince a federal judge that he is entitled to relief.” Southwick does not appear to see this as an invasion ignoring the deaths from fentanyl and drug trafficking in the US, the strain on public resources and cities of uncontrolled flow of migrants in recent years, saying- “A country’s encouraging its residents and citizens to enter this country illegally is not the modern-day equivalent of sending an armed, organized force to occupy, to disrupt or to otherwise harm the United States.” Yet even an armed organized force was pushed back in the War of 1812, and has little chance where the current problems have led to the deaths of more young Americans from drug trafficking than three times the deaths in the Vietnam and Korean Wars combined, three times the deaths in World War I and about 75% of the deaths in World War II, something that needs reflection and action. With the changing public sentiment in the UK and Europe and in the US on law and order and on migrants the Supreme Court is faced with coming up with a decision in the best interests of the Nation and its People. ...
