The World Bank and other donors have come up with $1 billion for Ebola recovery. India's broadband prices have dropped to the point where they are the lowest in the world. A UK comparison site shows 1 gigabyte of mobile data  costs $0.26 in India compare to $12.37 in the U.S. and $6.66 in the UK, and globally about $8.53.  Reliance Jio the company which dropped prices starting in 2016, says it is using voice and data on a spectrum known only for data use. Reliance Jio is using only one fifth of its capacity. and says is it is making more revenue per user than competitors. Competitors including Airtel and Vodafone have lowered prices reducing margins of as high as 30 percent to being barely profitable. Reliance Jio gives away its 4G feature phone JioPhone against refundable security deposit of $21, with plans of $1 a month. The handset supports Wifi and WhatsApp. India ha 1.17 mobile subscriptions, 55% in urban areas. Most broadband use now comes from Jio. Mobile data consumption has jumped in India in 2 years to more than 10GB per user per month, which is close to that in the U.S.    ...

How well U.S. presidential front runner does depends on whether the Democratic Party is returning to its roots when it was able to attract working class voters and people without college degrees. Over the years since Harry Truman's presidency the Republican party was able to peel off less educated working class white voters from the Democratic party on the basis of religion, race, gender and traditional attitudes to culture. Could this have gone too far and will the Democratic Party in the U.S. fight to recover support from its traditional base of common people, just as the Labour Party in Britain under Jeremy Corbyn sees itself as defending working class and common people's aspirations. Biden's future depends on how much he can rally the party back to its roots with his  Harry Truman like style and fighting spirit. Few American presidents in the modern period could match the courage, simplicity, openness and tenacity of Harry Truman, which is why he was able to come from behind and win in 1948 elections after the death of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945. ...

The best player for women's soccer, Norway's Ada Hegerberg, with 3 goals in the first half hour of the Champions League final, is going to stay away from the 2019 World Cup. Playing for Olympique Lyonnais since 2014 she helped win the fourth consecutive French league title.

She says "woman's soccer does not have the respect it should have in Norway," and decided not to play for Norway in this years World Cup. She says there are inequalities in investment at the youth and club levels. She has averaged more than a goal every two games and fels there is not the energy in woman's soccer in Norway that is needed. Right now after changes at the Norwegian Federation with new head Klaveness, who also stopped playing for the team in protest, the best they can hope for is that people know she is from Norway.

Wirecard has filed for insolvency.The $2 billion missing in a bank account for Wirecard is more than all the profits it has made over 10 years. It got off the ground in 2016 after Credit Suisse and Softbank took interest in investing. This report in the WSJ shows the hazy history of the company and the details about the missing money in the bank account in the Philippines. Ernst and Young says it was deceived, and the money did not exist in the accounts, as reported in this video by the WSJ. The billions of dollars invested in companies like Wirecard, WeWork and other companies, could easily have funded the PPE equipment, facial masks, and other healthcare equipment held as a reserve for emergencies such as this pandemic, in any large region such as North America or the European Union.   For every Wirecard there are 10 others in every region of the world. Just in the last month several imploded including a coffee venture copied right off Starbucks each involving losses of billions of dollars. ...

The stock market and economy recovered leaving workers behind who did not benefit and were hurt financially, causing a deep resentment among Americans that led to protest movements. The CBO annual report on the budget and economic outlook shows a deficit of $1.1 trillion for the current fiscal year, a decline of $200 billion from the prior year. Health care spending is a key factor driving the deficit. The news shocked the neighborhood in northern Virginia where he lives. He had lost a noticeable amount of weight under the stress, and federal regulators were conducting an investigation into Freddie's accounting practices.

United Airlines incurred a loss of $779 million in the third quarter of 2008 largely because of a$519 million charge to reflect the declining value of its hedging contracts for jet fuel. SOuthwest said it lost $120 million, its first loss in 17 years, because of its own charge of $189 million for hedging contracts declining value. This follows his book "Decision Points," on his own presidency. George W. says his father's accomplishments are overshadowed by the work of a transformative president (Reagan) who preceded him. The short period of four years in office also affects the assessment of the elder Bush. There is now greater appreciation of the work done in this period, especially the period when the Berlin Wall collapsed and the Soviet Union dissolved and the role played by the elder Bush in the transition. Bush describes the relationship with his father when he was president as one in which it was the comfort and help that counted for more than looking for any particular advice, especially as he admired his father. The elder Bush, 90, was in the audience. Remarkable for the longevity of the father-son pair compared to Adams and John Quincy, as Adams passed away 16 months after his son became U.S. president. And more so because his brother, Jeb Bush, is likely to run for president in 2016....

Jack Mapanje is a visiting fellow at Newcastle University Center for Literary Arts in Britain and has written a memoir of his period in prison. He was in Mikuyu Prison in Malawi when the news of Mandela's release was brought to him as a rumor by a prison guard. The same guard had earlier brought the rumor in 1989 that South African President Klerk had started secret talks with Mandela. He describes the therapeutic effect of rumors in prison. At the time Martin Munthali was also a political prisoner in Malawi after being sent to prison by Malawi's president Hastings Banda, a year after Mandela was sent to prison. Mandela spent 27 years in prison before his release. After Mandela's release, political prisoners at Mikuyu were released and free elections were planned putting an end to the regime of Hastings Banda, who had supported the Apartheid government in South Africa.

Under new proposed changes carbon emissions permits would be sold to industry and heavier polluters would have to pay more. And to make it fair to European companies exporters in other countries like China would have to buy these carbon permits to be able to export to Europe. There is similiar discussion about this in the USA which expects caps on greenhouse gas emissions in a few years. These changes wouldn't go into effect till 2013 at the earliest and industry will be trying to create a level playing field by then. Countries like China and India because they are developing have been exempt from the greenhouse caps under the Kyoto Protocol which expire 2012. Under the Kyoto Protocol which Europe signed and the USA did not sign, European companies are giving carbon permits free to emit a certain amount of greenhouse gas every year, the heavier polluters have to buy the permits from the ones that pollute less creating an incentive for companies to reduce emisssions.
