S&P credit analyst put GM and Ford on credit watch with negative implications saying both companies face a serious challenge to liquidity in 2009. And said in an interview that "these companies need a lot of liquidity to run their businesses, and they could approach the minimum levels they need if nothing changes." For GM liquidity concerns are rising because losses for the last 3 and half years have reached $70 billon and credit markets have locked it out of new financing and stalled asset sales such as the Hummer brans and its medium duty truck unit. All this has rattled investor confidence including slipping sales numbers in the US, Europe and in emerging markets like Russia. GM had the larges one day decline in its history by 31% to $4.76 on October 9, 2008, a postwar low for GM stock, and Ford fell 22% to $2.08. In fact GM's intraday low was $2.26! for an astonishing collapse.

Auto parts makers employ 600,000 workers concentrated in 7 states and also supply foreign carmakers in the USA. They are asking for access to TARP or other government money as they are feeling the effects of this downturn. Carmakers are using the stuy by the Center for Automotive Research that says 3 million jobs will be affected. However bankruptcy law allows the carmakers to continue to operate, and gives the automakers an opportunity to renegotiate all labor contracts on the basis of the new realities in the American economy, as demand collapses and credit is tight and companies need rescue money from the government. Douglas Baird, a Professor at the University of Chicago Law School who specializes in bankruptcy law says that this 3 million figure is laughable as modern bankruptcy law is designed to protect against that, in effect suggesting that companies like the airlines that are operating in bankruptcy can continue to operate as before but do so with serious restructuring.

Joe Nocera of NYT on a bankruptcy like option in which the government loans money but sets tough terms, and has someone with the experience and strength and the governmental powers to set tough terms and insist on them being followed without vacillation by the unions or management. And the Congress passing new legislation under the President's leadership to override the state laws that prevent closure of dealerships. The union benefits and mindset and management mindset would go through the wrenching changes that the GM bureaucracy and the unions need to implement to eliminate the legacy costs, the higher benefits costs so that GM does not pay a penny more than Toyota or Honda to its workers when all costs are added up period. And plants that need to be closed would be closed without long negotiations and job retraining and new industries in energy and infrastructure and technology would create opportunities for these displaced workers by 2010 as part of the stimulus program.

A critical point mentioned is that for a heavy polluter like China, the slowdown means less production of heavy industry like cement and steel that produces few jobs and has large emissions. The slowdown is an opportunity to make a transition to a greener economy that creates more jobs. The spokesperson for the European Commission says it depends on the vision and foresight of European, American and Chinese leadership whether they use the transition as a short term bitter apple to create new sectors that help in conservation, the environment, and for jobs, all at the same time. Government incentives and mandates, education, and leadership may be critical to doing this. Business and the private sector and markets can be shortsighted in this respect, and lack the will and staying power to see it through, leading to suboptimal results at best or destructive results as critical time is lost in indecision or inaction.

About two thirds of China is urban people but only 48% have residency rights, meaning about 250 million people are not getting the benefits of schools, pensions and healthcare in cities. Ministry of Human Resources shows only 22% of migrant workers have these benefits.  There are about 67 million Chinese children left behind by their parents in rural areas as they search for jobs in cities. These children do not see their parents often, sometimes not at all in a particular year. They have suffered lack of parental attention and have poorer schooling. In 2024 as some of these children grew up and became migrants themselves they did not want want happened to them happen to their children, and delay having children.  China's government considered rural couples as a good way to makeup for low birthrates. This has been proved not to be the case. China's household registration system is call hukou- it restricts access to healthcare and schools for migrants and discourages migrans who live in factory dorms or other restricted housing arrangements from taking children with them. Rural incomes are less than half of urban $3000 vs $7000 a year. ...

He says in an interview that he does alot of oversight and all of us should know from our 8th grade civics that Congress has a responsibility for checks and balances to make certain that the executive branch enforces laws consistent with the oath they take. This report put out by Americans for Tax Fairness shows tax rates of a group of 25 such business persons at 3.4% on wealth growth between 2014-2018 of $401 billion. This is not to say that Democrats or Republicans can be elected to solve this, which is basically a problem not of fairness but of how it enables underfunding of America's basic infrastructure of health, education, transportation, and public services such as parks, clean air, and renewable energy, energy grids, water supplies, heating infrastructure, on and on on the list. Why because the difference between a modern industrial base country and a backward, lack of industrial base country is just this list. When the companies also unfund maufacturing in the US as Apple does by making almost  all products overseas it means lossof manufacturing knowhow and loss of leadership of the free world which simply means chaos without America's leadership based on its founder's values.   ...

Democrat Harry Truman in 1940 went on the shipyards and into factories to supervise firsthand the federal spending in the war making hime known for the first time in Congress. Earlier reports in the WSJ showed in 2024 the way Republican areas in small towns in Kansas were making an effort to attract immigrants to meet the need for people in manpower depleted public services. The basic idea of legal vs illegal and all the consequences on a national scale in the US and in Europe when illegal migrations gets out of control and creates divided communities, and strain on public funds and resources, is one that has been seen for over a decade. In Missouri, in a largely Republican town in the US the friendly nature of American public to immigrants is seen in the way the local community cared for and had genuine respect for the worker at the restaurant. Japan also has a past history of unfair trade practices and the prime minister senior officials both understand the US need to rebuild manufacturing, and support this. This is also true of the UK which has completed it's trade negotiations and deal with the US, and sees the ITT or other actions as an internal matter for the US people. ...

In this WSJ post Musk is shown as having regrets on his posts in social media X. It only underscores the volatile nature of the activities of the Tesla founder which do a disservice to the genuine work of cutting costs- something that we have shown was taken up by Harry Truman during the spending in World War II with much grace and by walking in the shipyards and factories of the US without the constant chatter of social media posts. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph she has described the woman she is often compared to, Angela Merkel of Germany, as someone who doesn't get enough appreciaton. For May Merkel has actually achieved something significant by "steering Germany through a difficult time," and with her negotiation abilities during the eurozone crisis proved her resourcefulness, "hats off to her," says May. ...
