Reducing transport emissions is a big challenge. London has Ultra low Emission Zone which encourages people to switch to low emission vehicles.  Paris is creating 650 kilometres of cycling paths and plans to open up the whole city to bicycles by 2026. Buildings have a large carbon footprint - producing 38% of global carbon emissions. Of this 11% are in the construction materials of steel and concrete, Wood is an alternative material that is being tried in buildings. Passive heating is a way to heat or cool buildings by building underground canals around a building and using the natural temperatures of the earth to cool or heat the air above. This is seen in the Energon building in Ulm, Germany.

This report in The Guardian says what India urgently needs is for the US to lift export restrictions on supplies for India's vaccine factories, and tools such as genome sequencing to identify and control emerging variants of the coronavirus.

The report also points out that of the 1 billion vaccine jabs about half are in the US and Europe and the low income countries have only a tiny fraction of vaccinations. India which sent 64 million vaccine doses to countries including Brazil and Morocco, Bangladesh, in 3 months prior is reported to have sent only 1.2 million doses this month.

The crisis in India also shows the need says The Guardian for an international approach to the crisis no a country by country approach. It says the Bush plan for Aids and the the 2014 plan for Ebola in West Africa are models of an international approach that is needed now.

A problem for Tesla is that it has no response for competition from German, Japanese or South Korean imports of EV vehicles. Its last new model was in 2020 a cybertruck priced at $85000 and the next new car model is slated for 2026, says this NYT report. Tesla models are priced at $45,000 as competitors from Asia are cutting costs and prices rapidly. Competitors BYD, VW and BMW, Kia, plan to introduce new models much faster. BYD has its own battery technology and makes its own batteries, so that it can cut cost. The result in the first quarter 2024 Tesla sales declined to 387,000 from 423,000 in 2023, BYD's increased by 13% to 300,000, with an additional 324,000 hybrid cars up 15%. Consumer Reports says the controls are all from the screen make a Tesla harder to drive as other cars have switches and other controls.

Of the 550 campaign events conducted by Trump 70% are trademark rallies. Most rally diehards are white and many are retired or have the time on their hands, not tied to home, some even live from paycheck to paycheck. Some love the energy, and some even voted for Mr. Obama. Most are not rich by any means, but fed up with Bush and Obama, and what they call "the swamp."

Lengthy conversations between Scholz, Macron and Putin for over 80 minutes on Saturday last week in which German and French leaders tell Russia that it is getting deeper and deeper into a situation that is bad for Russia. With Russian gains using artillery in the east the situation is again moving in a direction where additional US military assistance would be needed for Ukraine to defend itself. Germany and France see a shortening of the war as a way to reduce the impact of a sharp recession. Macron and Scholz are making an effort to get Russia to talk directly with Ukraine to reach a settlement to end the war.

Absurd is a word that would apply to many aspects of New York City- the subway system, the transport infrastructure, the dilapidated sidewalks, the garbage shown here without any proper system of storage and pickup that other cities in Europe and Asia have. The Manhattan business district of New York City has office occupancy rate of only 50%, leaving half the office space unused and vacant. Only 9% of Manhattan office employees are in the office 5 days a week, 37% 3 days a week, says this report in WSJ. The business district is far from recovery. New York Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul have convened a group of civic leaders to draft a158 page report called- New New York Panel. The New York Panel suggests turning some of the business space into parks and promenades for pedestrians to make the city attractive and the space livable with green areas. A new director of public realm would report to the mayor. New York City has suffered much from the pandemic. The old midtown and the old city is no longer the kind of attractive livable green space that people want to live in or get to.

The border crossing at Kirkenes, Norway, remains one of the few border points in the EU with Russia that are open, where visitors go back and forth between Russia and Norway. This part of Norway near the Arctic Circle was taken back by the Soviets in the war, after Nazi Germany occupied Norway. Russia let Norway run this region from that time leading to friendly relations. Norway is the only neighboring country that was never at war with Russia. Because of its location far up in the Arctic Circle it remains a unique location with Russian ships coming here. 
And 62 miles from the Norwegian coast is Russia's ballistic missile submarine fleet. Norway as part of NATO provides support to Ukraine with $7.2 billion in aid. It also is a major supplier to EU for oil and gas helping the EU after the cutoff of Russian oil and gas supplies.

Better management of the economy has sustained Russian economic growth in past crises such as in 2008 when oil prices collapsed. Russian central bank chief Nabiullina has helped steer the economy holding US dollar reserves to just 11% the rest of $600 billion reserves in renminbi, euros and gold. Yet the war in Ukraine has introduced limits. With labor shortages and the technological isolation the war in Ukraine is setting new limits on economic growth, says the WSJ. Going forward the limit is about 0.9% economic growth a year. Before 2008 the Russian economy growth was at 7% growth a year, it dropped to 3.5% after the invasion of Crimea in 2014. With China facing deflationary trends, little recovery in growth, this shows that geopolitical tensions are changing the prospects of important economies. With globalization dimming the prospects of Singapore and UK have suffered. The US is investing in growth, and Germany is following the US model.

The problem in central highlands of Vietnam is "singularification," where farmers rip up land used for coffee crops and rice to plant durian whose price has doubled for exports to China. That period from 1990 onwards led to hypergrowth in China that modernized China yet shifted American and European manufacturing to China alienating working class communities in the western countries. It hurt China also through widespread contamination of air and water, and widespread corruption and decline of the CCP. The Bo Xilai demagogic effort to subvert the system from inside happened by 2012 endangering the system itself from the inside while it responded to the pressures created by the experiment with free market from corruption, regional inequality, and other problems. ...

This WSJ editorial shows a 3.1% decline in purchasing power lost to inflation since president Biden took office, average hourly earnings declining from $11.39 to $11.03. Yet it is also true that inflation has been cut in half in May 2023 to 4% compared to a high of 9% in 2022. Inflation is much higher in the UK and Europe. President Biden also passed the Inflation Reduction Act, intervened in energy markets to lower oil prices with policies to reduce prices for Russian oil. Jerome Powell at the Federal Reserve is aggressively tackling inflation. The Taliban are required to fight all forms of terrorism in Afghanistan as part of the agreement. The British government called for 250,000 volunteers to help the National Health Service in its programs for older people. Instead it got 750,000 volunteers, in an overwhelming response. Hundreds of community based groups have also sprung up across Britain, with additional tens of thousands of volunteers seeking to help, says this report in NYT by Mark Landler. It is a massive and spirited display of national solidarity at a time of national crisis. As Queen Elizabeth II said in her television address: "Our pride in who we are is not in the past, it defines both our present and our future."

More people will be added- over 400 million by 2050 as India urbanizes further. The Guardian looks at the situation in Bengaluru that in year 2000 was still cool and leafy except for summer that was for for a few months March to May with temperatures peaking at 34 degrees centigrade. Now the summer heat happens earlier 34 degrees C. by February and 38 degrees C. by May. Then there is the heat island effect as the city  built from asphalt cement and metal heats up during the day and heats the atmosphere at night.

BBC News looks at the situation in Bordeaux, France, after the Front Populaire wins the election. The NFP has a seasoned candidate in this parliamentary seat who can greet people by name. The RN candidate is 18 years old and is new to campaigning, showing that the RN of Le Pen had to field candidates with very little time for preparation in a snap election. People in Bordeaux and NFP supporters say 2025 and 2026 are years in which the Front Populaire has to deliver on cost of living actions to improve the lives of people struggling to make a living.
