The result today is that Labour's Starmer says he has a 22 billion pound gap in the Budget that the Tories Conservatives have left him, a hole he says that will lead to Labour cutting winter fuel payment for pensioners this winter.  The US with president Biden is so far ahead of Britain with $1 trillion in investments taking place under the Inflation Reduction Act and $53 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act. Harris plans to build 3 million homes and offer $100 billion to small business to spur growth. There is just no comparison and owes much to president Biden and Harris, and to senior Republicans who supported the administration on the economy. ...

On this day 104 years earlier Emily Wilding Davison lost her life running in front of the king's horse in the Epsom Derby, a desperate act to gain support for women's right to vote. In response women voted in large numbers leading to a turnout above 69%. 200 women were elected to parliament. Inflation is eating into wages, says Mick Lynch, the head of Britain's Rail Maritime and Transport Workers Union. He is gaining support in the UK as the union stages a rail strike after rejecting a 3% wage increase offer in the middle of 9% inflation in Britain. This report in WSJ says he is a media star after appearing on TV shows and responding to interviewer questions. There is a similar interest in the US labor movement as workers get support for wage increases in Britain, France, Germany and the US to tackle high inflation, and after years of depressed wages in which labor had lost the power to negotiate higher wages.

The chief scientific adviser to the government of Britain says "go hard, and go early" to prevent a surge of coronavirus in Britain in the autumn and winter with more activity indoors. Things are flattish at the moment, but if hospitalizations pick up the government needs to quickly shift from Plan A without vaccine mandate and without mandatory mask use to requiring vaccinations and mask use, calling for working from home, as part of Plan B. Unlike France and other countries in Europe Britain has not taken the strong action that is necessary. Prime minister Boris Johnson is pushing for new efforts in getting the remaining people vaccinated.

Gerard Baker in the WSJ says there is a dizzying collapse in the quality of leadership in  Britain and also in the US and other countries of Europe.  we are led by too many inferior people, he says. Liz Truss, Johnson and Sunak in Britain are examples of this, he says. They lack the experience and the capabilities needed. This is also true of Meloni in Italy, Macron in France and Merkel in Germany, ineffectiveness of Obama and Trump in some ways in the US.

Yet he says there is another problem for Brexiters in Britain and for Trump Republicans in the US. This is one of the abject chaos that emerges from trying to reconcile the desire for strong government and government support of working class supporters and the tradition of lower taxes and no deficit spending in the Conservative and Republican parties. In a corner of Wales known for its coastline and scenic beauty, a biology teacher Mr. Barry Rees sets up a homemade contact tracing system that worked. He is the director of Ceredigion county council. It is the safest county in mainland Britain with only 45 recorded cases in the last week for 75,000 residents. Early on in the coronavirus epidemic Mr. Rees decided to take up contact tracing with whatever resources were on hand and start quickly. This was was happening in German states which were also following low tech, get started quickly approach, but Rees was not aware of what was already happening in Germany. He knew about South Korea and Singapore efforts in contact tracing which put a lot of emphasis on human skills in calling and tracing and getting started immediately. Rees started with the people calling in sick of the 4000 people who worked for the county administration, as he had no testing resources. He started tracing these people and their contacts, and even though some were defensive the majority supported intervention to isolate. At the time there were fears of 200 deaths in the county so that there was no time to lose.  By April the area was facing an influx of people from Aberystwyth University and tourists visiting its sandy beaches, another reason for taking on the task with a homemade system. Today it has one tenth the cases in the rest of Wales.  The hidden fear in the country is that word can get out and lead to more visitors from outside the county. ...

Relations between Germany and the U.S. improve in the last year of the Obama administration. The low point is the NSA spying scandal. By 2015 with the Ukraine crisis and the refugee crisis, the U.S. and Germany develop closer relations. In April 2016 U.S. president Obama visits the Hannover trade fair and meets German chancellor Merkel, following a trip to Britian where he expresses support for Britain's membership in the EUropean Union. The U.S. general election campaign with less engagement of the U.S. in the world preferred by candidates Trump and Sanders, the Brexit vote in Britain, also creates a new environment and makes clear the need to support closer ties in an interconnected world.

Much of India's relations with Britain as a colonial power, and the US as the first real democracy (defined in a new way without colonial interests) after Britain in the modern world, were set in the period when Gandhi mentored by Gokhale and Tilak in 1900 set the independence struggle of the 1930's and 1940's. Modi merely restored the Gandhian spirit with a development focus and honest administration. This enormous contribution of Gandhi revered by all leaders including Modi is a benevolent one recognizing the important and one might say virtuous role played by the US under Wilson and Roosevelt to colonized nations such as China and India as can be seen in the personal letter to FDR written in the 1940's by Gandhi. There are two defining relations of the US, the first related to its founding as a British colony and a war of independence fought with the help of the French. And the other related to Asia, to Japan, China, and India as they modernized in 1900-2000. Of this the relationship with the most ancient of ancient civilizations in India is the dominant US relationship in 2025, because it unlocks the mysteries of westernization without the religious ethos of Buddhism in an imperialist Japan and now expanding Communist China. This religious ethos of China, Japan and Vietnam lies in Indian soil and in the ethos of the Indian people, and where Gandhi drew his inspiration. From this ethos comes the idea that India as a true friend of America and a Europe (that includes Russia) cannot ignore the devastation of Ukraine and inadvertently find itself a participant through its purchase of Russian oil at $119 billion a year (even when China under a expanding Communist government purchases Russian oil at $136 billion a year). The cost of the war is about $213 billion in a Russian wartime economy which also hurts the Russian economy and the cost of living through inflation for the Russian people. India will seek to do some soul searching and find the right path Gandhi would hold on to for Britain, America, and rest of Europe including the Russian people. ...

President Biden whose ancestors are Irish will visit Northern Ireland in an effort to hail the 25 year old deal that brought an uneasy peace between the two communities in Northern Ireland, the Catholics and the Protestants. The Catholics were discriminated against for centuries and wished to join Ireland, and the Protestants identified with Britain and wanted to remain part of Britain. Joining him will be the prime ministers of Britain and Ireland.

A new paper by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies says hospital admissions for the rest of the year could be reduced from 132,000 to 66,000 with a 2 week lockdown on October 24 in Britain, according to The Times.
