Rachel Sylvester in The Times points out that the Labour Party leadership has no incentive to support prime minister Theresa May in negotiations against the wishes of the majority of its voters, MP's and its own members. Mr. Corbyn is not likely to support May's proposals for a temporary customs union, as that concession means little, coming without support from May's own Conservative party. She says the only way out now is a confirmatory second referendum.

In the local elections the parties that did well are the Liberals and the Greens, who are on the Remain side. The strident pro Brexit side drew votes from the Conservatives.

Plan B is to reimpose the tariffs using the Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act and Section 301 which puts the tariffs on firm legal footing. In fact the ruling by the ITC Court on the use of emergency powers under IEEPA law said there was already Section 122 on the basis of which serious trade imbalances could be addressed. Trade Adviser Navarro told Bloomberg that this was a possible strategy to reimpose the tariffs. The federal appeals court has allowed the tariffs to remain in place after the ITC ruling. The administration is appealing it to the US Supreme Court saying that the ITC ruling has unfairly jeopardized the president's negotiations with other countries.

His second term was expected to be one in which some lessons were learned from the first term, yet the unease in the country remains.

The effort by 90 German universities to provide education for free to the large number of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East that are being given a home in Germany in 2015-2016. In rural areas especially in former East Germany there is still uneasiness about the large number of refugees expected to come in 2015- but students and most people in urban areas are receptive. Yet the challenges remain as the university system is crowded with students and can accomodate only about a fourth of the refugges coming in 2015. The low unemployment rate and need for workers is helpful in absorbing such a large influx of people into the country. Volunteers and the German language classes will help better integrate the refugees into German society. Though there is a small minority of people opposed to immigration, Germany society remains largely open to taking in and helping the refugees, compared to the situation in Sweden and Denmark where recent elections showed parties with anti-immigration stance getting a larger share of the vote and becoming part of the government....

Justice Kennedy in a prevailing opinion that seeks to let a cross stand in the Mojave National Preserve says- " the cross evokes thousands of small crosses in foreign fields marking the graves of Americans who fell in battles, battles whose tragedies would be compounded if the fallen are forgotten." In 1934 private citizens put a cross on federally owned land in the desert preserve. This remains there till a park visitor sues in 2001, 67 years later. Just to keep the cross the government has to transfer the land to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, till the same park visitor challenges the transfer. Frank Buono is an Oregon resident and an assistant superintendent in the park who is the vistor who challenged the presence of the cross in 2001. Since a lower court ruled it unconstitutional a plywood box was placed atop of the cross which lies on Sunrise Rock in San Bernardino county. The Interior Department and its Secretary Salazar have argued that the cross should remain where it lies in the case Salazar vs. Buono....

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Irish prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the European Council's president Donald Tusk warned of a "special place in hell" for politicians who promoted Brexit "without even a sketch of a plan." Tusk was also critical of Jeremy Corbyn saying there was a leadership void at the heart of the Remain movement. "Today there is no political force and no effective leadership for Remain."  Tusk said there are no alternative arrangements that could replace the backstop, saying "the backstop is needed as a guarantee, A safety net is not a safety net if it can be destroyed by one party." The backstop is a way to keep peace in Northern Ireland. The Irish prime minister and Mr. Tusk circulated a "thank you card" from a Dublin family thanking the EU for its solidarity. The card said Ireland was drawing strength from the words of EU leaders. It said "Britain does not care for peace in Northern Ireland.  To them it's a nuisance." ...

The U.S. Federal Reserve's forecast for the American economy is for growth in GDP of 2.2%-2.7% for 2012, wih unemployment of 8.2-8.5% by the end of 2012. The Commerce Dept. estimates for GDP growth are 3.0 percent annual rate for the 4th quarter 2011. Fed chairman Bernanke remains cautious about the economic prospects for 2012. Higher oil prices are expected to push inflation above the 2.0% Fed target for 2012. Bernanke's description of the recovery in early 2012 is that it is "uneven and modest" and unlikely to improve much for unemployment.

The restoration of the famous stained glass windows of Notre Dame Cathedral remains a challenge, says this report in FR24. Scientists are working on the 2000 stained glass panels of windows in a lab in the stables of a chateau, east of Paris. They were brought there after the fire two years ago. Some of them go back to the 13th century and remind us of how timeless our surroundings are.

The yields on TIPS, Treasury Inflation Protected Securties, suggests the markets expect longterm inflation of about 2.5% ayear up sharply from the 1% in fall 2008. The figures for the CPI are rising a bit, but still down about 0.8% year over year, which suggest deflationary trends. And the markets are expecting the Fed to raise its key target rate from roughly zero to nearly 1.25% by next June. Says Gongloff the market is showing its inflation anxiety about the Fed flooding the market with cash, but the fact remains that the Fed is still making up for the lack of demand in the private sector. He says the fundamentals still suggest deflation is a bigger risk than inflation.

Merkel say to Gemany in a weekly video message that "the danger posed by coronavirus remains serious. "Take it seriously because the situation is serious." It requires everyone to act responsibly. "By following the rules for social distancing, hand hygiene, facial coverings, every one of us contributes to our shared destiny, " she said. It is a message that should resonate in the U.S. India, Brazil and other countries hit hard by the virus. Germany's cases are approaching 200,000 with fresh outbreaks in some areas. Reopening everywhere creates new risks, vigilance is essential.

This Guardian report looks at the Post Office Travel Money City Cost Barometer, a travel survey of cost for 35 European cities. Nazia Parveen does a good job of comparing many cities across Europe showing what the cost comparisons are for a city break this year. While other European cities cost of hotels and restaurants are up steeply Athens and Lisbon, Porto, Lille, Bordeaux, Budapest, Zagreb, Warsaw,  remain good destinations for the cost conscious. Amsterdam, London, Geneva, Berlin, Venice Florence, Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Edinburgh and Dublin are costly destinations. In general smaller cities as in Germany cities such as Dresden, Leipzig, Bremen and Cologne, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Weimar, Erfurt, offer culturally very rich and yet less costly destinations.

Questions about how large oil companies could be slowing down the action needed to meet climate change targets set by the US and the EU. The Ukraine war disrupted oil and gas supplies leading to the realization that a transition period would include some oil and gas. The Greens and Energy Minister Habeck in Germany secured emergency oil and gas supplies from Norway and Qatar to get through the winter. Yet the basic goals of meeting climate change targets set by the EU and the US and other countries remain intact and require serious action. How will this be done and who will set the climate change action plan? The large oil companies have too much invested in fossil fuels to prepare for the future with renewable energy.

What is it like in Fushun, China? A city of 1.7 million in northern China it was a city that led in China's revolution against feudal regime and colonial occupation, and in cutting the birth rate. It is similar in size to Detroit, yet has only 5000 births compared to 20,000 in Detroit. Signs of aging are everywhere in Fushun as China's birthrate drops below 1.  For population to remain stable birthrate has to be 2.1. It is 0.7 in Fushun.

In Fushun most refineries and coal mines are closed. A third of the population is over 60 years old and half of the young people have left the city. In 10 years half of the population will be 60 years old.

It was a Labour government in 2005 that inroduced the rule that allowed a migrant who remained inthe UK for 5 years to be able to apply for leave to remain and to have path to citizenship. It is now 20 years since then and this has done  a great deal of damage in the UK as it faces divisions in society that affect the plans to improve lives of the people and invest in building infrastructure. European Commission of Humnan Rights also drafted these rights in wanton fashion not accepting the rights of any people in any nation to live in their own neighborhoods without what are called asylum hotels and migrants. Denmark had such laws before 2015. Denmark changed these laws, and the UK finally is set to change these laws that hurt growth and investment in Britain with unnecessary distraction from the task of building infrastructure and investing in public services from migrants illegally entering the country. Under the new rules in Denmark temporary residenc epermits are granted only for 1-2 years at a time, no permanent visas are granted. To gain permanent status one has to have full time job for several years and speak fluent Danish. Shabana Mahmood, the new UK head of the Home Ministry says-  “Denmark shows us how to be firm but fair: removing the incentives that draw illegal migrants to their borders while providing refuge to those in genuine need. “That is why we will follow the Danish model to restore order and control to our borders.” Mahmood's position is supported by Green and Labour voters is shown More in Common polling. This is important for Labour to succeed. She says about illegal migrants and the strain on public services- “The levels of illegal migration are putting immense strain on our country, and our public services – creating division within communities across the country. “Illegal migration is undermining the contract between government and its citizens – eroding support for the asylum system entirely.” ...

German chancellor Merkel will visit Greece in an effort to mend strained relations. She accepted an invitation from Antonis Samaras, the prime minsiter of Greece after recent elections. It gives Merkel an opportunity to show her support for Greece and makes it more likely that Greece will remain in the eurozone.

This analysis in the WSJ looks at president Trump's handling of the economy during the period before and following the coronavirus. It says a Gallup poll taken in September showed 56% or a majority of Americans thought they were better off than four years ago. The same poll shows handling of the coronavirus that hurt the economy not getting high marks for the president. A lot of uncertainty remains says this report.

The Seattle area, Bay area, Denver show slowing in rent and housing prices with improvement in affordability, increasing vacancies for rental housing. The housing and rental part makes an outsize part of the CPI index -35%. As prices of housing decline this has an effect on inflation. Fed chairman Powell says activity in the housing area has flattened out and remains well below levels in 2022. One reason Powell says he may cut interest rates next year.

Some 51.5 million women representing 49% of the total of 104 million voters will vote in the December 2018 general election. Yet only 22 were members of parliament in the 350 member parliament. Zobaer Ahmed in DW.com shows how women remain marginalized and underrepresented in Bangladesh government and parliament. The women leaders Hasina and Zia are from influential political families. Hasina's Awami League party has fielded only 25 women for the December election.
