The most striking aspect about Pew Research on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices and DEI in companies in Nov 2024 compared to early 2023 is the shift in sentiment about how much it hurts White Men. 36% of Americans now think it hurts White Men compared to 14% a shift of 22%. Among Republicans also there is a striking shift of 10% in just over a year. Asians no longer see it improving their situation. It comes also at a time when White Men are going through an unprecedented drop in college enrollment compared to women after financial crises and surging college costs, the kind of trend that is seen as unhealthy for the Nation.  Overall the shift shows says PEW Research that workers are more likely to believe that focussing on DEI is a bad thing and too much attention is going into doing this at companies. Financial markets and investors now see the uncertainties emanating from tariffs negotiations as temporary and unlikely to affect corporate profits and the US economy says this report in WSJ. When the EU requested an extension with EU president Leyen calling DJT on May 27th, Trump who had said the EU was dragging its feet on trade negotiations with the US, granted her request. Leyen promised to speed up the negotiations with the new deadline of Juy 9, 2025. Trump had called for an across the board 50% tariff on all EU products if the EU continued the lack of response. In this way DJT called the bluff the Europeans were playing seeking to portray the American tariffs negotiations in an unfavorable way.  How did markets respond? The S&P 500 increased by 2% on May 27th when it became clear that a trade settlement was likely to be reached in 6 weeks. Earlier DJT had met with Mark Carney of Canada another key trading partner and come up with an understanding on moving forward. DJT has shown flexibility with advice from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent who has experience with and carefully followed financial markets. ...

This editorial in the NYT says Bill Clinton moved the Democratic Party to the centre in 1992. In 2016 about 25 years later, after the removal of the Glass Steagall Act led to the 2008 global financial crisis and a deep recession, after the trade relations with China led to loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs over two decades and the hollowing out of industry in the midwest, things have changed. The revolution led by Bernie Sanders, a shrinking middle class, smaller access to college education for the middle and working class, and wide disparities in income, are putting the Democratic Party closer to its roots and the days of FDR. The Democratic Party platform calls for a 21st century Glass Steagall Act to separate normal banking from investment banking, opposes the TPP to prevent any further export of jobs overseas, and goes for a $15 minimum wage. This was also evident at the opening day of the Democratic National Convention when Sanders told the gathering in Philadelphia that even though he was not the candidate, these are the planks of the platform that Hillary Clinton will be pushing for in her presidency. What the editorial does not point out is that the Republican economic platform also calls for reinstatement of Glass Steagall Act, opposes TPP and opposes any loss of American jobs to overseas locations. It differs on the minimum wage leaving it to the states, and it is likely to skew tax cuts towards the wealthy, but also possibly removing the lower income brackets from taxes as Britain has done under the Conservative Party. Both parties today are looking for support from the middle and working class and have directed their appeal to these two groups which are in upheaval. The election of Trudeau in Canada recently also followed this trend, after the hollowing out of Canadian industry in Ontario and Quebec in a similiar pattern as in the midwestern U.S.  ...

Iran's new president is a moderate cleric Hassan Rohani. He won the presidential election in June 2013 with 18 million votes, or 50.7% of the votes cast. The second runnerup received only 16% of the vote, making Rohani the overwhelming choice of Iranian voters discontented after years of international sanctions over the nuclear development issue and the confrontational stance of the previous president Mr. Ahmadinejad. In a televised debate before the election Rohani summed up this discontent with the economic situation: "It's nice for the centrifuges to run but people's livelihoods have also to run, our factories have also to run." He contrasted the situation when he was the chief nuclear negotiator for Iran under president Mohamad Khatami, another moderate, when Iran avoided international sanctions, with the current situation. Currently even essential aircraft parts for Iran's national airline are difficult to source. Mr. Khamanei called Rohani "the people's choice." Khamanei and Rohani met to discuss the new government, which observers in Tehran say offers an opportunity for national reconciliation. The Revolutionary Guard Corps leaders also offered their support to Rohani. The Green Movement, Khatami and Rafsanjani supported Rohani before the elections. Rohani is known for his ability to reach out to all parties. He comes from a working class family in a small town in the province of Semnan, entered theological seminary later apprenticing himself to clerics at Qom, the main home of leaders of the Shiite religion. He then attended law school at Tehran University, becoming a student activist during the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Later Rohani studied in Scotland getting master's and doctorate degrees in law, which gives him a unique insight into concepts such as the rule of law for an Iranian cleric. He was member of parliament, deputy speaker of parliament and head of the management committee of the national broadcast service, and a member of the National Security Council....

This WSJ report on developers and home buyers in Tianjin show how the government policy of controlling speculation in housing prices affects ordinary home buyers when prices drop. A homebuyer from Hebei province hoped to find a better life in Tianjin, better education for her children. She used her entire savings and borrowed from relatives to pull together funds to buy an apartment for 1.5 million yuan. She is desperate paying the mortgage of 3700 yuan, works several part time jobs, and is mortified at the drop in price of the apartment, in this report. For decades housing prices were going up, now the government has sent clear messages that housing speculation has to stop and home prices for the first time are moderating to increases of about 4% a year and are falling in some cities including Beijing, Tianjin, and Guangzhou. The governments message is that people should use apartments for living, not for speculative price increase and profit. Local governments have their own reasons to prop up this speculation as they have for decades now depended on land sales to meet economic growth targets, a situation unique to China, which has financed a lot of the local infrastructure including overspending. ...

By grossly underestimating the risks of such dangerous dependence on Russia and on China, and ignoring warnings from the US, Merkel has hit Germany's new elected government of Scholz, Baerbock and Habeck with very serious problems that may take the next five to ten years to sort out. On energy and how to build a whole new supply chain in Asia with the US and its allies Japan, India and other countries. The ultimate irony was that Merkel felt that she was the leader of the free world, and a free world that excluded the US and India. This article by Saeed Shah and Syed Hasan describes the Taliban factions from the tribal areas that control parts of Karachi, Pakistan's main commercial city on the Arabian Sea. It provides a detailed map showing the outlying areas around the city centre, especially the shantytown areas and the areas with Pashtun majority population controlled by Taliban with roots in the tribal areas. The Taliban charge taxes and adminster law in the areas they control. A major operation was launched since Sept. 2013 by the Sharif government to free this key city of Pakistan from Taliban control and the wave of kidnappings, extortion and other violence from Taliban members. About 168 police officers have been killed in the efforts to control the city, but areas under Taliban control are still hard to patrol by government police and special Ranger force. Karachi anxiously awaits the result of peace talks of the Sharif government with Taliban. If the talks fail and an operation is launched against Taliban in tribal areas the repercussions will be felt in Karachi. Shah and Hasan provide a excellent picture of the tribal loyalties, religious extremism and entrenched culture of violent activity that extends from the border tribal regions of Pakistan into the commercial centres such as Karachi that is a vexing problem for the Sharif administration, police, business and ordinary citizens....

Malkiel suggests as techniques for rebalancing investor portfolios- putting over 25% of the portfolio in international equities for diversification, as Europe and Japan are likely to improve competitiveness and do better in 2015. For the bonds part of the portfolio he suggests adding a dividend growth fund as partial subsitute for what is normally an all bond portfolio. Rebalancing is designed to reduce the total risk of the portfolio by reducing the weight of overweighted equities in classes that have performed well in the past.
