He then briefed the German government on his talks. Chancellor Merkel says dialogue is also part of government policy: "Business contacts are still taking place and I am not interested in seeing the situation escalate, but rather am working towards a de-escalation." The revival of Britain's automobile industry under foreign automakers BMW, Tata Motors and Honda. BMW and Tata Motors Land Rover operate plants at nearly full capacity in early 2014. The "working time account" model at BMW borrows from the German practice of "kurzarbeit" with extra hours put in by workers at times of high demand to be applied to wages when demand slows down. This and lower payroll wages have helped keep British costs down per hour in 2011 for carmakers to 25 euros. It compares with higher costs in France of 45 euros per hour, and 28 euros in Italy, 46 euros in Germany, according to joint research by KPMG and Germany's Association of the Automotive Industry, VDA.

Daisuke Wakabayashi's exceptional account of how Steve Jobs directed the project to develop the iPhone starting in 2005 upto to the introduction in 2007. At one point Jobs gives Christie, the engineer leading the very small project team, 2 months to put it together or he would find someone else to do it. This is similiar to the way in which Sony's Morita approached his project team working on the Walkman telling them what he wanted to see and the size of the device. Jobs payed attention to all the details from how the phone names addresses appeared on the screen, dialing from the phone book, the swiping action to start the device, the music, and the colors on the screen. Only in on the project's detail were Bill Campbell, Apple director, and Jony Ive, Apple design chief. Christie was approached by Scott Forestall in late 2004 about this secret project codenamed "Purple." Christie is the engineer who joined Apple in 1996 to work on the Newton, and early touch screen device that failed because the technology was not developed enough at the time, making the device bulky and cumbersome. Christie was working on software for Mac computers in 2004. Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president for iPhone marketing, monitored other phone makers to see if they were coming up with a device that migrated the iPod's music features to the phone.
