Fidelity Investments has recovered from poor performance in that period and manages the pension plans of employers in the US, being the largest in this business. In 2026 Fidelity manages life savings of 20% of American adults and 50% of these customers signed up in last 5 years, says WSJ. After a period in her performance in the mutual funds business which was not great Abby was listed for demotion by executives under her father, who would sent her to run the philanthropy part of the business. It shows how awoman now 64 years struggled through this period and took the bold step of defying her father through control of 41% of the stock of the company to gain control of the company- a step that led to her father relenting and letting Abby run the company. It is a tale of how in such situations even the most favored can be put at a disadvantage by perceptions - in this case by Reynolds of Abby's leadership and ability- and need to act swiftly and decisively after impressions have been formed that lead to an outcome that doesn't need to occur. Her father Ned even though he in his younger period was a good stock picker, failed in two ways. Gives abrief history of AOL and the demise of its original model as an email pioneer. Its now shifting to being acontent provider run by Armstrong, an ex-Google executive. Tells how AOL outflanked and outcompeted CompuServe and prodigy by letting users use their own names instead of astring of numbers. But AOL did not see the coming shift from email through the AOL site to email that would not require dialing in to AOL. And AOL spent $40 on advertising per customer. Hotmail anticipated the shift and it was free, it also used viral marketing. Every Hotmail email would say "Get your free e-mail at Hotmail." With the change in technology enabling email without signing into aparticular website and free access AOL went into reverse and downhill. MSN bought Hotmail for $400 million, and Google email brought the next wave of changes with email coming free with a search that helped one speedily navigate through pages on the web.

Bear Stearns is taken over by JP Morgan Chase at $2 a share, a year ago it was trading at $170 a share. This was arranged with the Federal Reserve agreeing to protect JP Morgan from liabilities on Bear Stearns balance sheet and was done overnight in an emergency basis by the Fed and Treasury to protect the rest of the financial system from scares originating from a collapse of Bear Stearns.

BBC looks at how immigration policy broke down in Canada for the first time in decades under PM Trudeau leading to his resignation and replacement by Mark Carney. About 1 million or about 3% of the population were admitted as immigrants in 2022 alone. about 5 million may have entered the country since 2019 taking the population from 36 million to 41 million which is a 14% addition in 7 years. By 2025 housing prices had shot up and social services were strained, the whole system was broken as foreign student visas became a way to get permanent resident status.

A building boom during the pandemic led to extra supply of new apartment complexes in Austin. This is now coming down as the supply is 72% down from the peak year in 2025. As a result there are fewer special offers of discounts on rentals in Austin. Austin, Nashville and Phoenix experienced a wave of new apartment building complexes added to supply during the pandemic years, with Austin getting the largest supply because of new job opportunities in technology fields. Homes were going at 15% discount compared to bidding wars in San Francisco and San Jose in northern California.

Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota Executive Vice President in charge of Quality, the chief Quality officer at Toyota, explained at a press conference that Toyota has a good handle on individual components quality but not enough on the quality of components as they interact in environmental conditions inside the car. Moisture could collect on gas pedals inside the car in certain environmental conditions and cause the car pedal to get depressed and stick. There is a lack of research he said on how how accelerator pedal systems were affected by certain climate conditions and how moisture could collect inside the pedals and cause overacceleration. This caused one of the 2 recalls made by Toyota recently. Total recalls worldwide for faulty pedals and floor mats is now around 8.1 millon units. Mr Sasaki said that Toyota's research has shown that the gas pedal's electronics were not at fault. The fix Toyota has come up with is to ship a part , a shim, a small piece of metal which when inserted into the gas pedal assembly will prevent it from being stuck in a depressed position. Sasaki fears a global hit to Toyota sales especially in the U.S. market....

Baby boomers and older Americans are beginning a huge wealth transfer, the largest in modern history. Americans over 70 years in age had net worth of nearly $35 trillion, according to the Federal Reserve data. This is 27% of all US wealth, up 20% from 1990. This wealth is 157% of US gross domestic product, more than double what it was in 1990. Gift tax exemption today is $11.7 million for individuals and $23.4 million for couples. It is scheduled to go down to 2017 level of $5.49 million per person adjusted for inflation in 2026. Annual gifts were $75 billion in 2016. The Biden administration proposed reducing a $40 billion annual tax break in some of these wealth transfers. Some of this would go into infrastructure spending. Other ways the transfers could help the communities in the US revive after the twin crises of 2009 and 2020, one financial and one health, is how some of this money goes into funding many of the needs of communities in America today. $9 trillion is expected to go into helping communities from the $35 trillion. The Buffett children foundations have purchased farmland to create an agricultural hub in Kingston, New York, on the Hudson River north of New York city. They also set up a food cooperative in an old Honda dealership, and setup a ad free community radio station Radio Kingston. More of this kind of work is needed from individuals and couples in the American tradition of community awareness and solidarity, and in communities across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America during this pandemic following the same practice. ...

After winning a giant Pentagon cloud computing contract of $10 billion over the next decade Microsoft is mounting a challenge to Amazon's dominance in cloud computing. Amazon has 48% of the business renting out cloud infrastructure in 2018, according to Gartner. Microsoft has 15.5% and is gaining each year. Amazon took the lead by starting early by 2010. Microsoft and Google Alphabet were slow to start. Microsoft has an edge in its long history of working with business. These companies expand the business by building data centers called server farms around the world. Capital One Financial lost about 100 million in stolen customer records in 2018 with storage in Amazon's cloud infrastructure, safety being another issue in this business.

House Democrats in the U.S. see the Republican health care plan making the same mistakes in 2017 that the Democrats made in 2008. With the passage of the bill in the House of Representatives with a vote margin on May 4, 2017, rushed through in the way the Obama bill was also rushed through, the nation remains as divided as ever on the issue of health care. The Republicans favoring limiting subsidies and cutting Medicaid, and using some of the savings for a tax cut. The Democrats favoring mandated coverage for all and large subsidies to reduce the number of uninsured Americans, with expansion of Medicaid for very low incomes. Democrats in the House say the Republican House bill will result in Republicans losing seats in the House in midterm elections.

Sara Ehrman describes the time when Hillary Clinton worked in Washington D.C. as a 26 year old lawyer working on the Watergate committee, and Bill Clinton was teaching law in Arkansas. In August 1974 Hillary was living for about 1 year with Mrs. Ehrman, a friend who was a congressional aide at the time. She is 97 today, and recalls that time when she tried to discourage Hillary from going to Arkansas to join her boyfriend. Ehrman felt not much would come out of Bill Clinton, though she thought him to be handsome, and later worked in his presidential campaign and Hillary's presidential campaign. Ehrman was 55 then, and describes Hillary Clinton as a bit sloppy in her habits, such as not making her bed and having a lot of stuff strewn about her room, but really intelligent and very hardworking. At the time both lived together. Ehrman describes a daily routine of seeing Hillary go to work with coffee in the morning and come back exhausted late at night, having yogurt and going to bed, day after day.  The two met for the first time in 1972 when Ehrman was co-director of issues and research in the McGovern campaign in Texas, and Hillary was helping with voter registration. This report describes in detail the road trip to Arkansas that the two made together, when Mrs. Ehrman drove Hillary to Arkansas in her old Buick. They stopped at small towns  in the 1200 mile journey, and this journey ends with Mrs Ehrman crying that she could not get Hillary to change her mind about Bill Clinton and Arkansas. About what she thought was a bright woman throwing her life away in the deep South of the seventies. Chris Cillizza of the WP says there simply is no "new Trump," as mentioned in the meeting with president Nieto of Mexico. The speech on the same day in Pheonix, Arizona, following the meeting with Nieto, showed the Trump of the election primaries in which he talked about the criminal activities by undocumented immigrants and about building the wall on the Mexican border. Cillizza says Trump had left the impression that he was trying to expand his base with Hispanic voters through a meeting with Nieto, but it appears that it did just the opposite with Trump's reaffirming old positions on deportation and the wall in his speech.

All government workers are ordered to return to their offices full time by executive order of the president.

The Secretary of the Treasury says he will be in the office all days of the week and expects every worker at his agency to be in the office.

This will have some other consequences-

As workers return to offices it will increase the efficiency of government and its responsiveness to the people after the pandemic years.

It will set a model for the private sector to get people back to the office. As people return to offices this will reduce the demand for remote work travel that put upward pressure on prices of airline travel and hotel travel that increased the inflation in this area and sector of the economy.

The U.S. and India face difficult trade negotiations as India moves to build its Make in India campaign, building capabilities of Indian manufacturing companies for global supply chains. Mr. Trump will sign a $3 billion defense deal with India for supplying helicopters and other equipment to India. Indian policy on trade is to ensure local content and transfer of technology to build capabilities of local companies. The goodwill generated by the visit by Mr. Trump to India, and deals on defense could lead to agreement on other trade issues, as India and the U.S. balance other considerations such as the rise of China into the picture. This will take time and is likely to be done after the elections. Differences on tariffs will continue in the same way that differences with China led only to a partial deal, with contentious trade issues on technology left for the future.
