Daisuke Wakabayashi's exceptional account of how Steve Jobs directed the project to develop the iPhone starting in 2005 upto to the introduction in 2007. At one point Jobs gives Christie, the engineer leading the very small project team, 2 months to put it together or he would find someone else to do it. This is similiar to the way in which Sony's Morita approached his project team working on the Walkman telling them what he wanted to see and the size of the device. Jobs payed attention to all the details from how the phone names addresses appeared on the screen, dialing from the phone book, the swiping action to start the device, the music, and the colors on the screen. Only in on the project's detail were Bill Campbell, Apple director, and Jony Ive, Apple design chief. Christie was approached by Scott Forestall in late 2004 about this secret project codenamed "Purple." Christie is the engineer who joined Apple in 1996 to work on the Newton, and early touch screen device that failed because the technology was not developed enough at the time, making the device bulky and cumbersome. Christie was working on software for Mac computers in 2004. Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president for iPhone marketing, monitored other phone makers to see if they were coming up with a device that migrated the iPod's music features to the phone. One reason why outside of the midwest there is not as much concern for Ford, and GM, is the entry of foreign automanufacturers. Good jobs are being created in the south by foreign auto companies, even as Ford and GM close plants there. And the appreciating won makes it more attractive for South Korean companies to build plants in the U.S. Kia Motors Corp. said it has chosen West Point, Ga., as the site for its first U.S. factory. The investment provides good news for a state that has heard both Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. say they will close plants there as they restructure to cut costs. Also note the forecast of sales at 800,000 in 2010 for Kia, up from 275,00 in 2005, moving market share from 1.6% in 2005 to almost triple that. Where will it come from?

Indian Railways is going through a huge modernization program making travel at high speeds possible between major cities and making remote locations accessible. This BBC report looks at the travel that was done in the older version of Indian Railways in crowded rail compartments and different conditions. Rail travel to Baramulla in Kashmir and Rameswaram in Tamilnadu state are shown at different ends of India. This is changing rapidly as more modern trains which cover long distances in a few hours are taking the place of older trains. Modern rail stations are replacing old ones with levels of convenience and technology matching that in Europe.

This WSJ editorial points out that the biggest thing in Mr Renzi's favor is the desire for change in Italy, and the public frustration that favors "haste and boldness." Renzi's changes to the tax code are needed as many middle class Italians take less than half of their pay after taxes. Business will get relief from high payroll taxes to boost employment and create new jobs. The current payroll taxes of between 28% to 30% for employers and another 9% for employees are too high.The lower taxes should also reduce the part of the economy that is underground and increase tax revenues. One opinion survey show 48% of Italians favor leaving Italy because of the economic stagnation, another reason to move with speed on the changes.

Efforts by Greece's government officials in October 2011 to meet demands from the IMF, The European Commission and the ECB- collectively referred to as the "troika" in Greece- for 30,000 public sector job cuts. The first step was putting together layoff lists, and effectively create a special labor pool at reduced pay for 12 months, after which those not finding new jobs would be layed off. There is considerable difficulty doing this, as heads of departments are reluctant to do this. There is a constitutional provision that protects public sector workers from layoff in Greece. The troika is insisting on the lists, or across the board cuts in the event lists are not prepared. The 30,000 job cuts are part of job cuts in the public sector which would be a total of 100,000 by 2015.
