David Segal takes a detailed look inside Apple's retail stores in the U.S. and talks with employees at different stores to find out what its like working as an hourly employee at an Apple store. World wide Apple's 327 global stores sold $16 billion in Apple products. Per employee the sales are about $473,000, but at an hourly rate of about $12 the average employee makes about $25,000 per year. After recent wage raises this could be up to about $36,000. The National Retail Federation says electronics stores have about an average of $206,000 in sales per employee. Contrary to what most people may think most of Apple's employees are not engineers and other professionals, about 30,000 of the 43,000 Apple employees in the U.S. work as hourly employees in the retail stores. Most are young people in the early 20's, single, with health insurance provided by Apple not costing as much for that age group. There is no career path and most leave after a couple of years. Apple's 5% smartphone market share in India lags behind Sony at 9% and Samsung at 40% for 4th quarter 2012, according to Canalys. India is expected to become the third largest market for smartphones after China and the U.S. A major problem for Apple is India's multilayered distribution network, says Apple CEO Cook. Government rules require Apple to source 30% of parts in India to be able to open its own store network. Apple is also working on lower priced smartphones for the Indian market closer to Samsung's starting price of $111 for Galaxy smartphones in India.

RIM's Blackberry phones struggle to compete with Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Android software. RIM's second quarter net income fell by 59% to $329 million, from $797 million in the same quarter prior year. Gross margins declined to 39%, from 46% the prior year. Revenue declined 10% to $4.2 billion. The Playbook tablet computer is also struggling. RIM shares lost 19% of their value in after hours trading following the announcement on Sept 15, 2011. RIM introduced 7 new phones that are updates of existing phones. It is not known when the new phones using the QNX operating system will be available.

An audit by the Fair Labor Association finds that more than half of the workers at Foxconn's factories that supply Apple, Dell, H-P, and Microsoft, are exceeding the company limit of 60 hours of work per week under hazardous conditions. Apple in its own audit report shows 62% of workers in audited facilities worked more than 60 hours per week in 2011.

Samsung shipments of Galaxy smartphones S4 is estimated at 7 million per month for the 2nd quarter of 2011, increasing from the 6 million a month for the earlier model S3 smartphones, but much lower than the expected 10 million a month S4 shipments. Because other manufacturers can also make the Android smartpones and the uncertain reception for new features such as waterproof or large zooming camera lens, the sales of the Galaxy models do not have the same momentum as they did in 2012. Samsung gets over 70% of operating profits from smartphones. According to IHS iSuppli 63% of smartphone components are sourced inhouse by Samsung providing a cushion for margins and profits. Unlike Apple Samsung makes its own displays and memory chips preferring to do manufacturing within the company. About 5.7% of Samsung's operating profit in 2012 was from sales of components to Apple, according to Sanford Bernstein. Markets have apparently priced in the slower sales of Galaxy and the prospect of a drop in smartphone prices, with Samsung stock price down 10% in June 2013, and the share price at 6.4 times forecast 2013 earnings, according to FactSet.
