Apple offers a new way to buy iPhones directly from Apple with financing in September 2015. This will change the way iPhones are sold, giving more control over the sale of iPhones to Apple. It will enable Apple to stabilize core sales for iPhones by encouraging upgrades every year. The monthly payments are $32.41 for 2 years for the cheapest iPhone. Apple is taking aim at the average upgrade time which is increasing- it went up to 26.3 months in 2015 from 18.2 months in 2010, according to a telecom consultant. With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales surged for Apple in the first 3 quarters of 2015 by 50% from the prior year period. It will be harder for Apple to generate this kind of sales increase as the new iPhones introduced in September 2015- the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have better cameras and "3-D Touch," only incrementally different. A 16 gigabyte iPhone 6s would cost $778, about the same as the $649 price and Apple Care coverage of $129. The way iPhones were sold through wireless carriers kept the price hidden with higher wireless service charges- 2 years of a Verizon wireless 3 gigabye data plan ended up costing users twice the amount of the $649 price of the iPhone. Now the competition among wireless carriers will shift to pricing cuts and changing their pricing strategies. The result of the changes is likely to be increasing shifts from one carrier to another as Apple allows direct buyers to choose the carrier they want....

Uncertainty about inflation in China, is it a longer term situation or is it temporary na d will moderate, and is it mainly for food or will it spread to other items besides food. And how long can the government subsidize the cost of fuel and let the power and oil producers suffer losses by restricitng passthrough of increased costs for Petrochina and Sinopec. If inflation continues to be a problem at about 8% per year then it would affect consumption and possibly tightening measures by the central bank that would slow down growth, and bring some moderation to the demand side of the equation in oil prices which some estimates put as high as $200 citing increased Chinese and other demand.

Most of the $180 billion in infrastructure spending in the stimulus plan will be spent in 2010 and 2011. Only $20 billion was spent in 2009. This includes money for rail lines and water projects. But this will not make adent in the jobless numbers because much of that work is mechanized, and the unemployment rate is expected to continue moving upwards. In all only one third of the $787 billion for the Stimulus that was approved has been spent in 2009. According to IHS Global Insight the ramped up stimulus spending could contribute 1.4 percentage points to GDP in 2010.

Britain leaves the European Union on January 31, 2020, almost half a century after it joined the EU. There is a transition period till December 31, 2020 to work out the trading arrangements with the EU. Britain is asking for a trade deal similar to that which Canada signed with the EU recently. Boris Johnson says he would accept a "off-the-shelf" model first proposed by the EU negotiator Michael Barnier. 

The Canada model would mean an almost tariffs free trading arrangement which would include border checks, and which would exclude Britain's large services sector. This would be the ideal arrangement in the British view. The impact as estimated by the British Treasury is for the negative impact on the British economy to be minimal, for the British economy to be about 4.9% smaller over 15 years compared to having not left the EU. This might be offset by trade gains with trade deals made with other countries such as the U.S. and Japan.

After a second round of price increases P&G's last price increase of 10% leads to first quarter revenues up 4% on sales volume declines of 3% for the first quarter of 2023. Some of this money will go to buy back stock- P&G plans to buy back $8 billion of its own stock. Companies such as P&G are countering criticism of price increases by saying they offer premium products or use the term "irresistable superiority" says this report in NYT. This leads to "profit price spiral" and adds to "wage price spiral" effects. A executive board member in eurozone says half of the price increases in EU can be attributed for the last quarter of 2023 to company profits.

Six European Union states pass Britain, France and Germany in fully vaccinated percentages on August 5, 2021- Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Malta. Fully vaccinated are very close to 60% in these states. The fully vaccinated person in the EU gets a EU Digital Covid Certificate as shown here. The vaccination drives in Britain, France and Germany have now stalled due to the vaccine hesitant groups. To get some idea of this the second dose was given to 265,000 in France and 165,000 in UK on August 4. In the US southern states vaccination drive never got off to a good start adding to the problem of unvaccinated who are most of the people in new daily cases, leading to a new surge by August 4. France will soon overtake the UK in fully vaccinated percentage, showing that an early start as in UK is not enough. One in three in the UK in the 18-30 years age group has not taken the first shot, which is alarming. The US has a similar problem in the southern states in an aggravated form and also across the US in some form where young people have not taken up vaccination. ...

Russians vote in 2021 parliamentary elections. With 30% of votes cast the United Russia party of Mr. Putin wins 45% of votes cast, followed by the Communist party of the Russian Federation with 22%, and the Liberal Democratic party getting 8%. Russia has mixed voting system with half the seats directly elected from party lists, and the other half assigned to individual candidates. United Russia had 334 seats out of total 450 seats in the outgoing parliament. Putin will need over 300 seats in the new parliament to get the two thirds majority to enact changes to the constitution. Putin needs this to extend his current term which ends in 2024.  Putin draws most of his support from the older part of the population that has seen the hardships imposed following the collapse of Communism around 1990. This led to collapse of the ruble currency, increase in poverty, an effort by oligarchs to capture state enterprises, and a chaotic period for law and order. Shockingly during that period even life spans of Russians declined as reported in the WSJ. Liberals who supported the shift to democracy had not anticipated all the ill effects of introducing capitalist free market systems in such a sudden and free fall way. Such sudden shifts to free markets are now better understood and seen as the wrong way, as western capital markets fail without inbuilt protections, safety net for workers and retired people, and are subject to serious distortions if no vigilant authority exists. This is in reality not a free market but a market captured by the few, in the interests of the few. Once this was clear retired people, pensioners, military, law enforcement, and liberals realizing what had happened shifted support to United Russia founded by Mr. Putin. Mr. Putin faces the typical situation faced by incumbents over long periods where there is a sense of the need for change. Yet the pandemic and other economic crises that could happen in the event of mismanaged economy are never really too distant for countries such as Russia, China, India that are developed but yet have not the strong industrial base of US, Germany, France. Such economic crises including the ruble currency and Russian energy companies were better managed under Putin than under the chaotic period following the collapse of communism and the introduction of so called "free markets" that were anything but. During the recentfree fall in oil prices Putin was able to manage a transition period with the help of president Trump who negotiated a price for oil with the Saudis to protect US shale oil workers and companies, as well as Russian workers and oil companies. As a result Russians particularly young people look for alternative places to vote for opposition parties such as Liberals, Communist party, and other parties. But the majority of Russians including those working for state energy and other state companies tend to stay with Putin's choices for state, regional and federal administration and for parliament. Nationalist spirit also provides additional support as Putin has restored Russia's status as one of the important nations in the world. Some missteps such as interference in US elections have led to a loss of some of this international influence, yet even president Biden understands the situation in Russia and is willing to work with Putin with new rules of conduct Under the Russian system about 70% of the laws are not made by parliament but are done by the government and the administration of the president and then go through parliament. In addition to parliamentary vote there are 6 governor races and three races for heads of regional republics. ...

U.S. Health and Human Services Department officials say one has to be "appropriately paranoid" about protecting the vaccine from theft in transit and at distribution centers. Very tight GPS tracking and even dummy trucks are planned. Hospitals vary in their approach to safety with some practicing normal security lockups and some treating the vaccine as they would a controlled substance with multiple checks before release. 

Brazil and Mexico followed by Peru and Argentina have experienced the most pharmaceutical theft incidents. The U.S. is also in the top five countries for pharmaceutical theft. U.S. marshals will accompany shipments of vaccines. Five large hospital systems in the U.S say the challenge is still keeping the vaccine refrigerated at extremely low temperatures and getting people vaccinated than theft.

In this look at China's One Belt One Road Inititative, DW.com analyst Siegfried Wolf is critical of the way it was put together. It has no institutional structure, and is mostly based on bilateral not multilateral arrangement, and lacks transparency. He says its will complicate geopolitics in the region. This is already evident with Japanese foreign minister Kono calling for Japan, Australia, India and the U.S. to come up with an alternative to OBOR. Wolf says the EU has concerns about corruption, exclusion of regions inside countries such as Pakistan in economic arrangements, and seeks free trade guarantees. His biggest criticism of the Silk Road Initiative is that being based on Chinese loans it will pose a severe challenge in terms of debt buildup for weaker economies. This was already evident with the effort to convert part of about $6 billion in loans to Sri Lanka, through a $1.12 billion lease to China of the port of Hambantota. Wolf says many of the projects inside OBOR were already planned before it was setup, and now put under OBOR as part of president Jinping's initiative.  ...

The US sees no contradiction to India looking for bargain priced oil from Russia to meet the growing needs of its economy and is actually furthering the goals of the G-7 by lowering the price Russia gets for its oil. It helps the economy of 1.2 billion people that like the rest of the world has struggled to fight the pandemic and has incurred the kind of heath costs that even China is now struggling to pay for. President Biden clearly understands and supports this. Democracies an only succeed if they fulfill the aspirations of their people. On this point Biden made clear in his State of the Union that he will generate what it takes from large corporations that paid no tax, to invest in America. Rather than fuel the profits of large oil companies India has increasingly chosen to use Russian discounted oil to invest in India. The Biden and Modi policies are identical generate savings and invest big time in trillions of dollars over the next few years to put democracies ahead in meeting rising aspirations that have been unfulfilled for far too long, which is where the real battles are being fought and will be won, and rightly so. US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt,  said during a visit to New Delhi on Feb. 16-17- "Our experts now assess that India right now is enjoying a discount of about USD 15 a barrel in the price that it is paying for its imports of Russian crude. So by acting in its own interest, by driving a hard bargain to get the lowest price possible, India is furthering the policy of our G7 coalition, our G7 plus partners in seeking to reduce Russian revenues."  Looking at the bigger picture the problem was created by Germany under Merkel who built Germany's over dependency on Russian oil to power a cheap fuel economy it thought was in Germany's interest. This is now being reversed by the hard work of Mr. Habeck of the Green party in the coalition government of Scholz in securing alternative supplies in record time for the EU to avoid a recession. In this sense the perception created early of India which has suffered itself from invasions in 1962 and incursions in the Himalayas more recently, it is not a problem India can solve by becoming energy short at a time when it has invested so much in fighting the pandemic. A similar problem was created by Republican and Democratic administrations of the past that concentrated the supply chain in one country. India lost much investment in the last 8 years as a result of the policies of Merkel's Germany and past Republican Democratic administrations in concentrating the supply chain in one country. ...

The problems that hit the UK economy with the announcement of unfunded tax cuts were worsened by very poor communications, the cavalier attitude of the new Truss government and finance minister Kwarteng, and a lack of experience, says this report in the WSJ.The toxic mix of inflation, higher interest rates particularly in the US, and the conflicting messages from the Conservative party with critics within the Conservatives calling the step misguided, had a strong impact on financial markets. Yields on British government bonds jumped beyond that of Greece and Italy, and the British pound fell with large drops in its value falling to 1.03 to the US dollar. Only the intervention by the Bank of England helped recover the pound to $1.11 and yields that went up from 3.6% to over 5% to drop back down to 3.8%. Many other countries face the same high inflation and rising interest rates in the US, so that poorly managed political situations such as the leadership race in the Conservatives party in the UK can have damaging economic consequences. This is a point of caution for other countries economies and governments says the WSJ. Italy's new government coalition has managed to keep expectations of major changes to policy to the Draghi government to the minimum in anticipation of economic problems that could emerge with differences with the European Union, and to avoid poorly managed communications. This is true of all countries in the world and a reminder of the importance of correct messaging in financial markets, and taking a prudent role of funding extra spending programs. This was also done in the $360 billion Inflation Reduction Act and Climate bill of 2022 by the Biden administration. where the dollar spending was adequately accounted for with policies considered prudent to tackle climate change, support badly impacted segments of society, and new infrastructure. There are about 2.4 million workers on American farms. 44% of them are undocumented workers says the Department of Labor.  They do jobs such as picking the fruits and vegetables that are part of the food supply. Deporting them all will increase prices of farm products as harvesting fruits and vegetables will be difficult. During the Eisenhower administration in 1953 deportation plan large growers in California and New Mexico used seasonal agricultural labor from Mexico, and the nation's food supply of vegetables and fruits depended on these workers. These companies lobbied hard for ways to keep these workers. On the other side were smaller farm owners who used fewer migrant workers. The complication this time 2024 is that unlike in 1953 under Eisenhower mass deportation when the border was otherwise peaceful, in 2024 the US has faced a decade unprecedented in its history of flows of fentanyl and drugs across the southern border. The deportation is about migrants who are not easily integrated culturally into the US, about the dangers of illegal entry in such large numbers that it disturbs the quiet life of the small towns and cities in the US. The US needs immigrants but in a planned way with legal entry, and no flows of drugs across the Border, that protects the American people and serves America's interests.    ...

The mistakes  and the right action done in Italy that the world can learn from as Italy tackles the coronavirus. The coronavirus is a dangerous pandemic yet there is one part of it that can be used to take the right action. The timeline of countries affected early in January and February and early March with information from these countries on what worked very effectively and what did not work with bad results is available. The mistakes were made in Bergamo, a town in Lombardy region of northern Italy with the highest number of infections and deaths in Italy. Bergamo had limited testing, no rigorous attitude for quarantining those who had come in contact with people testing positive, and lack of contact tracing. In Vo another town in northern Italy the situation is a complete contrast with resort to mass testing and isolation of clusters which has reduced infections to zero and made it a safe place. Vo is a small rural town 85 miles east of Bergamo in the Veneto region. This was the method used in South Korea, China, Taiwan and other Asian countries that have overcome the virus. Bergamo is an example of what failed in Italy with the worst number of fatalities. The health crisis worldwide has shown this  method of first general quarantine to buy time to build capabilities for testing  and preventing things spiralling out of control,  then mass testing, contact tracing and isolating the people who test positive, and repeating this process again and again till infections are way down,  is the only way to control this crisis. In the early days massive quarantine or stay at home strictly enforced is the best solution till production of tests accelerates to permit mass testing and isolating the clusters of infections. This mass quarantine buys time for accelerated production of tests and building up the capabilities of labs to process these tests, including use of a central national lab centre with national data on computers for microbiologists to monitor the entire country. This was done in South Korea reports in WSJ show. This is vital for everyone involved in the effort to control the virus to understand based on the experience of  countries that have successfully overcome coronavirus. It is the experience in South Korea and Italy that the U.S. White House response coordinator Dr. Brx is looking at and learning from as she and the White House team in the U.S., governors of all 51 states, health officials including CDC, are looking at as they execute their action plan in phases.  ...

Gerard Baker in the WSJ points to issues of transgender, illegal migrants in US cities, and race in politics as issues on which the "correct" views were causing anxiety for the American public. Parental anxiety on transgender at school for their children, public anxiety on illegal migrants in American cities, and anxiety about race as a defining factor in political life. The illegal flow of fentanyl and loss of life in the US is a basic issue- how could the US as the largest advanced economy in the world become so feeble that it cannot stop illegal flows of fentanyl and human smuggling. Baker also says that he doubts that the new Department of Government Efficiency will work and eliminate waste, that he thinks imposing tariffs will depress domestic productivity and reduce living standards of the people. And that installing what he calls "oddballs" will work except to create chaos. On the issues of infrastructure, cost of  manufacturing revival in the US which were issues in 2016 and turned into the agenda of the Biden years little is said, and on cost of living nothing tangible about reversing the 20-30 percent of price increases in housing and groceries that have happened in the pandemic years 2019-2023. ...

Martin Caparros describes the deadlock in Spain with no two parties on the right Ciudadanos and Partido Popular, and on the left, Podemos and the Socialist party, able to have enough seats i parliament to form a government. An agreement between Ciudadanos and Partido Popular of prime minister Mariano Rajoy, has brought the 2 parties close to 170, 6 short of a majority in the 350 member parliament. New elections will have to be held for the third time in December 2016 as a result of this impasse. The two main parties in Spain the Partido Popular and the Socialist party, alternated in forming a government during the period since the restoration of democrati government after Franco's dictatorship. Following the deep recession in Spain since 2012 two new parties have been formed Podemos on the left, and Ciudadanos a centre right party. Both parties are critical of corruption, and the cuts in spending for education and healthcare following the financial crisis in Spain and bailouts by the European Union. Caparros describes the cynicism that voters express about not just the two main parties, but also for Podemos and Ciudadanos, as voters voice their rejection of politicians and parties on the left and the right. A similiar process is taking place in other countries, in Britain most recently with Brexit and the departure of prime minister Cameron. In the U.S. with the Sanders and Trump movements, and the Beppe Grillo movement in Italy.  ...

Air Canada is planning a campaign to persuade business travellers to try Air Canada hubs in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, for flights to Europe, Asia and other long distance destinations. This strategy is aimed at secondary markets in the U.S. that lack direct service to Asian countries. Toronto's Pearson airport has just completed a C$4.4 billion modernization. In Vancouver and Montreal passengers connecting to the U.S. will no longer have to claim their baggage and will go directly to U.S. customs. The same arrangement is being planned for Toronto this fall. Air Canada is counting on its fleet of younger planes and wide body aircraft and a pleasant experience through Canadian airports. Recent capacity additions for Aisa will also help. Air Canada's trans-Pacific traffic increased by 22% in 2010 from 2009. Air Canada made a profit in 2010, after suffering a serious loss of 1 billion Canadian dollars in 2008. As automakers rettol their plants all three GM Ford and Chrysler look for ways to win support at the party conventions in Denver and Minneapolis and in Congress for a bipartisan support to get the $3.75 billion Congress has to appropriate for insurance and other costs to get the $25 billion loan program signed by President Bush in 2007. Debbie Stabenow, a Senator from Michigan backs an increase of this loan program to $50 billion and its presented as a way to help the country become more fuel efficient and develop alternative sources of energy. This loan program could make a critical difference to the cash strapped American companies when credit is hard to get in financial markets or the cost is too high. Note the importance of the states in the midwest like Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to both Presidential candidates make it increasingly likely that both will favor fully funding the automobile companies retooling plants and funding new technologies. These states could decide the election and the weak economy and high unemployment in the midwestern states means the candidates and the political parties will have to support the auto industry's efforts to remake the companies and America's energy future....
