The US economy declined by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2022 or 0.9% on an annualized basis. What does this mean? NYT provides a look with a breakdown of where this comes from. Business and residential construction went down by 11-12% as they are interest rate sensitive sectors and the Fed has raised interest rates by 0.75 of a percentage point twice in 12 months. Yet consumer spending was holding up and increased by 1% in the second quarter. 

Fed chairman Powell told a conference yesterday that he still sees a pickup in spending in the second half of 2022 as buyer balance sheets are good, the labor market is strong, and wages are increasing.

Oil prices at the pump for automobiles are declining for the seventh straight week. Prices declined to about $4. In Texas the average is about $3.67 a gallon. California has the highest gas prices at an average of $5.46 a gallon. The price decline is a result of rapidly slowing growth in China. China and India are still getting oil supplies from Russia which frees up oil supplies for the US to import. 

Public in the US is also cutting back on driving and the miles driven is likely to see a drop of 5-10% this summer. There is better planning of trips to combine errands. This helps combating climate change through conservation efforts that were neglected during the last decade.

This they say depends on whether the hush money payments made to a porn actress were personal or political for the campaign to protect the candidate. The specifics of the case and obvious intent matters a lot in the case, say experts. NYT says the groping issue that came up in the Trump campaign's early days- and which could have tanked the Trump campaign- was at about the time that this story may have come out if it was not stopped with hush money payments.

China has taken a new approach to tackling this health crisis, isolating the area and speeding up action to find solutions to the virus. A shortage of hospital beds and resources in Wuhan led to the decision to build a new hospital rapidly. China's rapid response is the first high speed response and could be a model for future outbreaks. Before this during the SARS crisis in China, and other health crises worldwide, action was taken gradually by hospital and government authorites leading to more deaths and wider spread of disease.

Housing markets in US that went up with jump in demand during the pandemic, markets in Nashville, Austin, Phoenix, are now in downswing. Migration patterns turbocharged by the pandemic are now fading. Overbuilding, slowing in population growth and lack of affordability are creating  vacant office space, and unsold single family homes. From 2020 to 2022 Austin house prices jumped by 60% with very low borrowing costs,, now in 2024 they are down 11% from the peak in 2022. Demand  dropped with a surge in interest rates creating unaffordability. By 2023 home sales reached a 30 year low. even today Austin homes are seen as 35% overvalued as home prices increased at over twice the rate of per capita incomes of 22%.

Mr. Ambani's Jio company is targeting both ends of the pyramid. It is investing $25 billion on a 5G network coming in late 2023. At the lower end a new $12 mobile phone calld JioBharat by India's largest telecom provider aims to reach 250 million people who use 2G mobile phones. Mobile phone penetration in India is about 46% in 2021, up from 17% in 2016, according to World Bank. Millenials group ages 18-49 who have decided to have zero children post pandemic is growing, as shown in this story in The Washington Post- with many graphs about what is really happening. A 2021 Pew Research poll shows 44% of childless adults ages 18-49 saying they do not want kids, or are not likely to have kids. This is up from 37% in 2018. And 56% of these people simply give no reason, just that- no kids. The difficult economic environment is part of this, so is the difficulty in raising kids that do better than their parents, the huge resources needed to raise good kids, all leading to this view among millenial women.

An emergency appeal to have the case on the travel ban to the Supreme Court has the disadvantage that of the 8 Justices on the court the ruling could end up at 4 against and 4 in favor. The 4 liberal Justices are unlikely to support it. Another more likely scenario is taking a conventional petition approach and this would mean a decision on whether the Supreme Court hears the case would come by April, and hearings starting in October. By that time Neil Gorsuch could be on the Supreme Court filling Judge Scalia's vacant position- leading to a decision, instead of a tie that leaves the appeals court decision to stop the travel ban in place.

The debate was broadcast by all television stations and was watched by over 100 million viewers. Trump made three times the interruptions made by Clinton. This Editorial Board Opinion in the WSJ reminds readers that it is the Government Accountability Office of the US itself that made these estimates of annual losses from fraud and waste.

A Government Accountability Office report of 2024 estimated the “federal government could lose between $233 billion and $521 billion annually to fraud.” The GAO report said “a government-wide approach is required to address it,” and advised that Treasury take up and “leverage data-analytics capabilities” for the job of stopping questionable payments and payments that look dubious. This was suggested as a necessary step to cut waste and fraud in a bureaucracy that is this large.

The Romney campaign's campaign manager Matt Rhoades is from Saratoga Springs, New York and attended Syracuse University. Rhoades is competitive and eager to win. Some of the key decisions Rhoades pesuaded Romney to make are releasing his tax returns before the must win Florida primary given Romney's reluctance to do so, and getting the candidate to give up his suit and wear informal clothing. The informal dress and manner has taken away some of the negative image of a Romney as a business type not comfortable with ordinary people.

Britain's economy shrank by 0.5% in the last quarter of 2010, according to Office for National Statistics. Unemployment went up to 7.9% and 2.5 million jobless. Inflation up from 3.3% in the year to November, to 3.7% in December 2010. Mervyn King, governor of Bank of England, says inflation will go up to 4-5% in 2011. The austerity plan is only now beginning to go into effect and creates a difficult year. The VAT, a consumption tax, goes up to 20% from 17.5% on Jan 4th, and public spending cuts go into effect in April. With consumption depressed, higher investment and exports are the two areas supporting growth. There is a risk that the Bank of England will have to raise interest rates, as it left interest rates at 0.5% in December 2010. Under these conditions not much of a recovery can be expected in 2011-2012.
