U.S. revised GDP figures from the Commerce Department show growth of 5.1% for the 3rd quarter 2014, up from 4.6% in the 2nd quarter of 2014. The 1st quarter's contraction, and slower growth of about 2-3% expected in the 4th quarter 2014 means the full 2014 GDP growth is expected to be about 2.5%, according to U.S. Fed officials. For 2015 oil capital expenditures will decline, and housing continues to struggle. Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, says "the integrity of the City matters to the economy of Britain," as he takes strong action to safeguard financial benchmark rates set in the City of London. Following the manipulation of LIBOR for which banks paid heavy fines this is a major issue. New legislation will make it a criminal offense, punishable with 7 years in prison. Manipulation will be determined based on the intentions of traders to place trades or share information so that their interests are served above a client's interest. Not just LIBOR, other benchmarks such as London foreign exchange benchmark rate, key gold and silver rate, ICE Brent index and Sterling Overnight Index Average (Sonia), ISADFix, are also included in this legislation.

Trust bank is rescued with a $530 million injection by Russia's central bank in Dec. 2014. The bank was taken over by the Deposit Insurance Agency which guaranteed the deposits of customers. As Russia raises interests by 17%, the ruble stabilizes with a 5% gain on Dec. 22, 2014. Alexei Kudrin, former finance minister and the architect of Russia's improved finances during Putin's previous terms in office, told a news conference that Russia now faces a full fledged economic crisis that will be painful in 2015. He expects a drop of 40% in imports, inflation at 12 to 15%, and decline in living standards. He also said Russia's credit rating could fall to junk status making it difficult to obtain financing. Kudrin was critical of the way the Russian government handled the crisis, saying action was slow and the government did not act as one team. He called for improved relations with western partners- "For a way out of the crisis, it is of high importance to regulate relations with our foreign partners- first of all with Europe, the U.S. and other partners."...

The sudden change in the prospects for Venezuelan bonds with the sharp drop in oil prices by Dec. 2014. Price of credit default swaps on Venezuela debt show a 61% chance of default in 2015, and a 90% chance of default in the next 5 years. In previous years Venezuela debt was considered safe by emerging market investors because of oil revenues. Venezuela and its state owned oil company, PDVSA, issued a significant amount of debt from 2007 to 2011. Analysts say the debt outstanding for PDVSA and Venezuela is $66 billion. In the short period of a year sharp declines in commodity prices have created a crisis for Venezuela's finances. Fitch Ratings has lowered the credit rating on the bonds to CCC from B. Venezuela's benchmark bonds traded at 46 cents to the dollar on Dec. 19, 2014, after dropping as low as 38 cents. Yields on short dated bonds are above 40%. Problems in Venezuela can create contagion effects for other emerging markets- Russia, Argentina, Turkey, Brazil, India, Indonesia, China- especially with Fed signals about raising rates which lead to capital outflows. ...
