Much of the cost for Canadian oil sands are fixed costs and once these costs are incurred production increases can take place over decades say Canadian oil sands company executives. CFO Corey Bieber of Candian Natural, says costs at it large Horizone mine are at $37.13 Canadian dollars per barrel in Jan 2015. He expects to cuts costs by at least $10 Canadian dollars per barrel by higher volume production cutting the operating expenses. Increasing production says Bieber does not mean adding people. As a result most of the Canadian oil sands producers can operate at oil well below US$47 a barrel, as low as $30, and are increasing production in 2015. This means Saudis will have to face competition from Canadian oil. It also means the Keystone pipeline will still be needed to transport Candian heavy oil to Gulf Coast refineries in the U.S. Suncor, the largest Canadian oil-sands producer, is increasing capital spending to C$7.2 and output by 11% in 2015. Canadian Natural is increasing production by 7%, and Syncrude Canada Ltd. is planning a 6% increase for 2015....

The negotiations between the Justice Department and S&P that are likely to lead to a settlement with S&P paying a fine of $1 billion for bad ratings on mortgage securities. This would wipe out operating profits of one year for S&P. It comes after S&P initially responded that the civil suit was a punitive action as a result of its downgrade on U.S. Treasury debt.

He cites the heavy risk for long term investor outlook and psychology of the Fed moving too quickly in increasing interest rates, because of the steep drop in oil prices, the crash of the ruble, slowdown in Europe, deflationary trends in the eurozone and Japan, and slow growth in China. The Fed now has more room for taking a cautious approach says Greifeld, as wage growth is tepid, the dollar is strong, and oil prices are down significantly.

George Walden reviews "Opium and Empire" by Richard Grace, which focusses on the origins of Jardine, Matheson & Co., the British firm run by two Scottish traders Jardine and Matheson. This firm was at the centre of the trade in opium carried out on the black market in China using opium brought from India. It paid for the shipping expenses to take tea and silks brought back in the British market. The confiscation of a shipment of opium in Canton, China, by a Chinese Commissioner led to the first of the opium wars. This ended with the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 negotiated by Foreigh Secretary Palmerston giving Britain possession of the island of Hong Kong. It was the long history of such depredations, including the Japanese invasion in the 1930's that led to the nationalism and rise of Communists led by Mao in China by 1945.

Pope Francis plans a visit to the Philippines and Sri Lanka in Jan. 2015 This is an effort to support the Catholic Church in countries experiencing rapid population growth and change. The Philippines has 75 million Catholics, about the same number as in the U.S., and compared to 46 million in Italy. Mexico has 96 million Catholics, and Brazil 126 million Catholics, Sri Lanka 1 million, according to the Pew Research Center figures for 2010.

A difference between QE in the U.S. and Japan with ECB action for QE is that the Fed in the U.S. is able to buy U.S. Treasury bonds. To accomplish this the ECB has to buy the sovereign bonds of all the countries in the eurozone. This is not equally as effective to stimulate the economy as the interest rates in Germany are quite low, and the rates low in Italy and France.
