This lets companies like Toyota and Ford sell hybrids as a fashion statement and then turnaround and sell gas guzzling SUV's because the low CAFE's for their whole fleet lets them do it. Its and outdated energy policy from the time when gas cost $10 a barrel. Leonhardt makes a point that is getting more coverage in the media.

Chrysler's sales are dropping the fastest of all the car companies . April 2009 sales dropped 24% from March 2009. Ford sales are doing better than Toyota, as they declined in April over same month prior year by 32%, compared to 42% for Toyota. It appears that the Buy American factor may be helping Ford Motor more than the other American car companies, and that Chrysler also suffers from the lack of new models with new technology and investment in new features. At GM the situation is better at Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC, where sales in April 2009 declined by 29%, over same month prior year, which compares with a 55% decline in sales, of Pontiac, Hummer, Saab, and Saturn brands which are likely to be dropped. CTS Corp of Elkhart, Indiana supplies accelerator asemblies to Toyota. It is now designing a new pedal to stringent specifications from Toyota. These pedals are manufactured at aplant near Toronto. CTS also supplies parts to Honda Motor Company and Nissan Motor Company, and says only 3% of its business is from Toyota. It mainly builds auto sensors and components.

This editorial in WSJ says the lesson for Airbus after failed bids to get U.S. government contracts was that public perception about EADS Airbus as a European manufacturer affected its prospects. The selection of Alabama for the $600 million plant shows the attractions of that state as a right-to-work state that offered the right incentives, not just for Airbus but also for Mercedes and Toyota which have manufacturing plants in the state.

China's sales of automobiles dropped by 7.4% to 20.7 million in 2019, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Sales of GM were hit hard with adrop of 15%, and Ford sales dropped for two successive years. Also hit hard were low to midrange Chinese brands with declining sales in western and central China. 

German and Japanese brands picked up sales with Toyota sales increasing by 9% in 2019.

GM plans to bring the Chevy Volt, a plug in type of car that will run more on the battery than the Toyota Prius- which uses gasoline support as soon as it picks up speed- to market in 3 years. But it doesn't yet know how it will do it. What created the opportunity is that Toyota is having a hard time of its own trying to figure out a battery that can provide more electric power, more punch, that would raise the Prius mpg from 46 to about 80 mpg. Its lithium ion technology batteries to achieve this haven't passed the safety tests so Toyota is pushing this back to 2011. This created a opportunity for GM to come up with its own for a plug in Chevy Volt. Its looking a small companies in the US that might supply these batteries. GM has come up with 2 consortiums of suppliers, one from MIT called A123 that is based on the work of MIT Prof.Yet-Ming Chinag who works with iron phosphate technology that is less prone to fires and safety issues. The other is led by S. Korean chemical maker LG Chem. Toshiba is working on research for a lithium ion battery for cars that will be safe on the Japanese side. It is not clear how this will turn out because batteries for laptops have had fires and safety issues, but the R&D is on in earnest for a new safe electric battery for cars. And automakers know its not just about an electric car. On it rests the image and innovation leader perception that is so important in marketing that no amount of advertising can fix, as the US automakers have learned to their extreme grief. ...
