The support of 10 Republican senators now makes it possible to pass a legislation that covers the basics of controlling use of assault weapons in the US. This includes raising the minimum age for use from 18 years to 21 years. Senators Cornyn of Texas and Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina are some of the Republican senators supporting this legislation. It also has the backing of Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky who is the Minority Republican Leader in the Senate. A broader ban on all assault weapons does not have much support from Republicans.  For years a spate of shooting each year in schools and other places would lead to cries of outrage from Democrats and sympathy from Republicans and yet nothing got done to control the use of assault weapons. Now a more prudent approach is taking the place of a call for a complete ban. Small incremental steps are now seen as OK. President Biden also sees this as the right approach to move in the right direction till more agreement or a breakthrough can be achieved. This is not just on gun control but also on a number of social issues. This may also reduce the tensions in American society that were exacerbated with no controls on behaviour of social media companies. Corrective incremental steps may create the right environment where useful dialogue and discussion absent today can be brought back for making larger decisions in the interest of the American people in the future.  ...

He has shown a sharply different approach to his predecessor Boehner who preferred to keep matters close to himself and his inner circle. Ryan has put drafting legislation into the hands of members of the House, organized meetings where moderate Republicans get to meet conservative Republicans so they can agree on common goals, shared information with Republican members on meetings with Democrats, and communicated with the media at frequent intervals to keep the public informed. There are 34 Senate races of which 23 are in states traditionally controlled by Democrats. Jacky Rosen is leading in Nevada, and Senator Ted Cruz will have trouble defending his record in the Senate. Senator Rick Scott a Republican from Florida will also have difficulty holding onto his seat. Republicans will gain the seat of Joe Manchin in West Virginia. Democrats could hold onto seats in Montana and Arizona. Ted Cruz, US Senator from Texas makes a pitch for $1000 accounts for every newborn American child set up by the American government to which parents and relatives can contribute $5000 a year, invested in accounts based on S&P 500 index growth, which would create enough money by the age of 18 to create citizens with a share of the wealth in society. It would create $170,000 by the age of 18 for each child 18 years from now when invested at a historical average of 7% in mutual funds that are based on the S&P 500. It would give them a sense of participation in society that the current system fails to do when it puts most of the advantages on one side which is higher educated and with higher income parents vs the other side of less educated and lower income parents with additional burdens from social ills.

Janet Protasiewicz, a Democrat, wins 55% to 45% for Republican Daniel Kelly in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election. This gives Democrats a one vote majority in the Supreme Court. It will mean a challenge of a 1849 abortion law and the redrawing of the electoral maps that gives Republicans  a majority in the state assembly. The governor is Democrat Tony Evers and the legislature in Wisconsin has a Republican majority.  States in the midwest such as Michigan and Wisconsin played a part in Mr. Trump's gain of the presidency. Since then Ohio has moved into the Republican side, and the close contests are in places like Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Colorado moved to the Democratic side. Just 40,000 votes in Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin separated Biden from Trump in the election of 2020 even though Biden had 7 million more votes than Biden because of the Electoral College system which goes by state's won. In 2016 Trump and Biden were separated by just 80,000 votes.   ...

Mr. Trump has decisively changed the Republican party. Most Republicans support Mr. Trump personally, less the Republican party. Mr. Lindsey Graham, a senator from South Carolina, says of the Republican party before Trump that it had become a bit staid, that we looked like the banker next door who may foreclose on your house. Mr. Romney epitomized that in his view. Gone are the views on deficits, on wars, and on imports and transfer of technology to China as being acceptable.  Five years from 2015 when Mr. Trump came into prominence with his new style taking on the establishments of both parties with a fierce disdain for convention, both the Bushes and the Obamas and Clintons, the Republican party is completely transformed. Registered Republicans are now 60% non college educated in 2020 compared to 50% non college educated in 2016. The Trump policies on trade putting American workers first and America first have a resounding popularity with this audience- this should be no surprise after decades of job losses and factories shipped overseas under the previous administrations for 2 decades. Most of these workers are not college educated and are white and had enjoyed a good standard of living with a high school education in American factories till the shift of American manufacturing to China destroyed good paying jobs and impoverished the American working class.  Only 30% of college educated people are registered Republicans in 2020 compared to 40% in 2016. Overwhelmingly about 90% of registered Republicans are white.  They are majority male and older but there is a significant about 40% female and 40% young population under 40 years of age. This might resemble the party put together by Missouri Congressman Harry Truman as he led the Democratic Party in 1948 with a majority of non college educated Democrats, fighting for American workers and America first in the cold war with Russia. Truman also had a rough Missouri farm language and accent comparable to Mr. Trump's rough style and language disdainful of the old establishment and new tech establishment. Both were heavily disliked by the media and both did not let this bother them in any way. Both liked facing large crowds as Truman showed in campaigning by train across the country and Trump has shown in campaign rallies run in his own way. ...

Karl Rove, advisor to President George W. Bush, and organizer behind American Crossroads political action committee, says the election will be decided by the higher support for Romney among independents and the high turnout of Republican voters. The prediction for the voter turnout among Republicans is 36% Republican vs. 35% Democratic, according to Gallup. This compares with the 39% Republican and 37% Democratic in 2004, and 39% Democratic 29% Republican in 2008. The early and absente ballot voting advantage has significantly gone down almost by half for Democrats as more Republicans cast early votes in swing states like Ohio. Closing statements and crowds also appear to confirm this trend. Rove sees this as 51% to 48% favoring the Republicans. The addition of swing states - Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania also appears to suggest that a broader movement is underway that is happening right now in the final week before the election on Nov. 6, 2012. Rove focusses on the numbers. A behavioural assessment shows the importance in this campaign of the centrist position adopted by Romney in the closing months of the campaign; the selection of Ryan which gave Romney support from the Republican conservative base so that he could talk freely about his record in the liberal state of Massachusetts to independent voters and women, and most important the clear message to voters focussed on a five point plan to get the economy recovery were critical in shaping these numbers....

Wellsville is 80 miles south of Rochester, New York. The town of 7000 made parts for coal fired power plants for 100 years till the impact of climate change led to decline. Today it is recovering from the loss of jobs as it is building parts for wind turbines. It is a very Republican area and one resident says Republicans were quick to say that anything renewable, wind or solar was bad. Gradually there is a sense that the town can thrive once more.

The first step for the Bush tax cuts to be extended to single earners with income under $400,000, and couples earning under $450,000 was part of the agreement reached Jan. 1, 2013. Republicans see accepting tax cuts on the wealthy as a way to remove this issue in future negotiations to focus on spending cuts needed to improve U.S. finances. ...

Kansans come out at a town hall meeting in rural Palco, Kansas, setup by Senator Moran, to say they have serious problems with the healthcare bill in a Republican Congress. Kaplan of the NYT says few Republicans in Congress have setup town hall meetings to hear the views of people in their constituency because of the strong criticism from older Americans hurt by the bill's provisions. Rural Kansas is affected by the bill. Senator Moran says of the bill that he is from rural Kansas and wants to hear what people think. Senator Moran is one of the few Republican Senators who have come out against the bill. Kansans are realizing that policy matters after the experience with actions taken by Governor Brownback to cut taxes and spending. Now Kansans are also realizing that there is a cost to being ideologically driven in coming up with solutions whether from the right or the left of the spectrum. Senator Moran after all is in the mainstream and led the 2014 effort to give Republicans control of Congress. It is also the state of Dwight Eisenhower, whose hometown was Abilene, Kansas, known for being moderate on issues, a descendent of down to earth Pennsylvania Dutch families, and for saying- "a people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both." Here Moran does exactly that, listening to how the Republican healthcare bill affects rural Kansas, without getting muddled up with the politics on the issue. ...
