Ukraine's conflict flares up again in Feb. 2014 with the flow of Russian arms and fighters into eastern Ukraine. The U.S., Germany and France call on Russia to respect an agreement made in September 2014 to end the conflict. The new Rapid Response Force with a spearhead of 5000 troops deployable in 48 hours is intended to counter Russia's new aggressive position in Eastern Europe. Command centers will be established in the Baltic states Lithuania, Estonia, Lativia, and in Poland. Romania, Bulgaria. Leadership will rotate for this force between Spain in 2016, Britain in 2017, followed by Italy, France and Poland. Germany currently leads a temporary version of the new force. It is designed to give each nation time to prepare for further action. Within weeks an additional 25,000 troops could be deployed alongside the 5000 troops. U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, is NATO's top military commander. He says the U.S. will have officers in each of the 6 command centers, and in larger bases located in Poland and Romania. The U.S. will provide support for surveillance, intelligence, logistics and airlifts. Retiring Defense Secretary Hagel had called for the Rapid Deployment Force to be ready for action in the Middle East or in Eastern Europe....

The U.S. Labor Department reports employers added seasonally adjusted 257,000 jobs in January 2014. Figures for November and December are adusted upwards by 147,000. About 1 million new jobs were created since November 1, 2014.

The Baltic Dry Freight Index (BDI Index) dropped to 577 in Jan. 2015, its lowest level since 1987. The BDI Index went up to 11,793 in 2008. Capacity is about 20% higher than demand for dry bulk shipping vessels of commodities such as iron ore and coal. Analysts say tonnage of dry bulk vessels went up by 85% after 2008, just as the demand fell sharply.

Weakness in the U.S. and Russian market for Adidas and criticism of CEO Herbert Hainer by shareholders. Adidas share price is down about 25% compared to Feb. 2014 even after a 11% increase in 2015. In the U.S. market Adidas has fallen behind Under Armour Inc. to No.3 spot in U.S. sports brands, and North American sales decreased 10% in euro terms for the first 9 months of 2014. The largest competitor Nike has seen a 30% increase in its share price in the last 12 months. Hainer is CEO since 2001, a period in which Adidas earnings quadrupled. Adidas is preparing a new 5 year strategy.

BT Group PLC acquired mobile company EE from Deutsche Telekom of Germany and Orange SA of France for 12.5 billion pounds in cash and stock. EE is the UK's largest mobile company and BT Group the largest fixed line telecom company. With this acquisition BT Group can now bundle fixed line, mobile lines, and television services, to increase subscriber revenue. Deutsche Telekom with a 12% stake is now the largest shareholder in BT Group. Orange will have a 4% stake. The acquisition provides BT Group with a faster 4G network and 30 million EE customers, 24.5 million direct mobile and 834,000 broadband.
