The growing middle class in Mexico is to be seen in cities like Queretaro, far from the drug violence seen in cities on the Texas border. Even though growth has averaged only 2-3%, the number of Mexicans who see themselves as middle class in a country of over 100 million is 65%, according to a survey by pollster Jorge Buendia. The definition of middle class is a new refrigerator, a car and a couple of cellphones. Sometimes this is also aspiring to be or thinking you are middle class. A big change is the shift to small families. Astonishing as this may sound, Mexico's fertility rate has declined from 7.3 children per woman in 1960 to 2.3 today, according to the World Bank. The U.S. fertility rate is 2.1 children per woman.

The WSJ discloses that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition 160 page report in 2012 described Google's anti-compettitive practices and recommended a anit-trust lawsuit for three anti-competitive practices. The WSJ obtained documents based on the Freedom of Information Act. Mullins and Winkler provide a detailed account of the practices cited in the report as anti-competitive. The FTC Commissioners did not act on the report and instead voted unanimously in 2013 to end the investigation after Google agreed to some voluntary changes. The report stated a different conclusion: Google's "conduct has resulted-and will result- in real harm to consumers and to innovation in the online search and advertising markets." Mullins and Winkler point out that this report shows Google's statement that no wrongdoing was found is incorrect.

The smartphone market in Brazil is shifting to the $100-$300 range. Because of higher import taxes and other costs, including paying for the full price upfront, buyers pay about $260 for a Moto G whereas a iPhone 6 would cost $1060. The focus is on the better value for the Moto G compared to the Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone in developing countries, where new middle class consumers such as in Brazil may make between $5400 to $27,000 a year. This creates opportunities for such phones with superior value- the Moto G has a 5 inch HD display, a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm pocessor, and an 8 megapixel camera. This has helped Lenovo Motorola Mobility take 18% of the Brazil smartphone market, according to IDC, making the Moto G the best selling smartphone in Brazil.

Whirlpool shifts 80-100 jobs from its Monterrey plant to an Ohio factory producing machines for laundromats. The Monterrey plant will not lose jobs because it is making more washing machines for the expanding Mexican market. Electricity is cheaper in the U.S. than in Mexico which provides some of the savings. Transportation from Mexico also offsets the higher wage costs in the U.S. of $18-19 at Whirlpool plants. According to Reshoring Initiative- which supports shift back of offshored jobs, the loss of jobs to offshore locations continues but is now being offset by job inflows to the U.S. Some of these inflows that receive less attention are manufacuring facilities being setup by foreign corporations in the U.S. as costs of energy decline and labor become more competitive.

A Brookings Institution study of hiring trends and unemployment in the 100 largest metropolitan areas of the U.S. at the end of 2012, shows 78 metropolitan areas adding jobs in the 4th quarter 2012. 14 of these areas had more jobs at the end of 2012 compared to before the 2008-2009 recession. Six of these cities were in Texas. This included Knoxville, which gained from jobs added at a nearby VW plant. Other cities were Oklahoma City, Omaha, Salt Lake City, Charleston. Only three cities in the East and West are on the list- Pittsburgh, Washington and San Jose, and none in the midwest, showing the geographical divide in job gains. And Washington D.C. will lose government jobs after job cuts in the government. Charleston will lose jobs from cuts in military spending.

As Toyota Kirloskar moves to increase capacity at its plant in Bidadi, Bangalore, to 5000 units of the new compact car, localisation for components becomes abig part of the strategy. The goal is to achieve 90% localization by 2011 from 65% today, as parts imported from Japan cost more with the over 30% appreciation in the yen-rupee exchange rate. The Innova has 65% localization of components, and the Corolla has 45% which will be moved up to 75% and 50% respectively by 2010. The dealer network will be expanded from 82 to 150 by 2010-end and Toyota-Kirloskar wants to be in the semi-rural and rural towns. Hyunda has bought back less than 100 cars under its Asssurance program which started in January 2009 according to a Hyundai spokesman. Yet it has done wonders for Hyundai's image in uncertain times. It put Hyundai in afavorable way on people's minds. Hyundai market share went up from 3.1% in November 2008 to 4.3% today according to Autodata Corp. And so Hyundai is the only car company that increased sales in 2008. Only two years back Hyundai was struggling to get respect in the American market. The consumer confidence index of the Conference Board declined to 61% in September 2008 and to 38% in October 2008 in a survey of 5000 households. THe index reache 100 in 1985 and 38 is the lowest its recorded since the index was started in 1967. The survey showed more than half the respondents worried about the job market deteriorating further. About 760,000 jobs were lost for the 9 months to September 2008, the Labor Department reports. And home prices declined 16.6% in August compared with a year ago for 20 cities, the biggest annual drop in the history of the Case Shiller Index, for Home Prices released by Standard and Poors. Phoenix and Las Vegas declined by 30% and Los Angeles,Miami, San Diego and San Francisco decline by 25%.

Cost estimates to Boeing of the strike by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing 27,000 workers at plants in Kansas, Oregon and Washington, is about $100 million a day in deferred revenue and postponement of the long awaited 787 Dreamliner. The walkout started September 6, it concludes November 2, 2008, a little sort of 2 months, which suggests a loss in deferred revenue of about $5-6 billion. The union members include electricians, painters, mechanics and other production workers. So what did the union get out of this? The union says the new contract protects 5,000 factory jobs, prevents the outsourcing of certain jobs and preserves health care benefits. It also promises pay increases in 4 years instead of three, as outlined in previous offers.

The EU's competition commissioner to crackdown on pharmaceutical companies that are delaying the entry of generics drugs with various tactics that are anticompetitive. EU has raided the offices of several marge drug companies and retrieved documents that show this activity was going on. About 5% of medical bills or 3 billion euros coud have been saved from 2000 to 2007, if companies had allowed generics to enter the market earlier and not resorted to these antitcompeitive strategies. Like paying off generics companies or having so many patents on the ingredients of the drug, in one case 1300 patents on one single drug, and then suing the generics companies to tie up the case in the courts.

The part of the tax law that limits state and property tax deductions to $10,000 and limits deduction of mortgage interest is likely to slow the rise of housing values in 2018. Much of the effect is psychological as the impact is felt on the East Coast, California, Midwest and the D.C. area. The median U.S. county will see a decline of 0.8%, and some counties in New York could see declines of 10%, according to Moody's analysis. The impact is greater for higher priced homes, and where incomes are higher with big mortgages and big tax bills.

Japan and the European Union announce a new trade agreement, in a response to the protectionist tone of the Trump administration in the U.S. The deal is announced at the time of G-20 meetings in Hamburg, Germany. The deal removes the 10% duty on Japanese car imports to the EU, and removes barriers to European automakers in Japan. Experts say the deal comes at a time when the European Union wanted to come up with a response to Brexit and Trump style protectionist sentiment. European automakers say they need assurances that they will have better access to the Japanese market.

Hillary Clinton has adopted some parts of the Sanders agenda including some aspects of providing tution free education in public colleges. Both Hillary and Bernie appeared at a joint rally in New Hampshire. Sanders said that at the Democratic Platform Committee ending on July 10, 2016, the two had come together on setting a platform that he believes is the most progressive ever for the Democratic Party.

Herbert cites figures from the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston which divides households into 10 groups based on annual household income at looks at unemployment levels in eachfot 4th quarter 2009. The highest group with incomes of larger than $150,000 had unemployment of 3.2%, the next group at $100,000 to $149,999 at 4%, households earning $60,000 to $75,000 had jobless rate of 6.4%, with $50,000 to $59,000 a 7.8% jobless rate. Its only when you get $40,000 to $49,000 that you see jobless rates of 9%, that is close to the national average. The worst pain is in the lower middle class groups with the 7.8% and 9% unemployment and in the income groups of $12,500 to $20,000 which have 19.1% unemployment. For workers at the bottom the unemployment rate is 31%! The workers in service industries, such as food preparers, building cleaners, less educated, high school dropouts, blue collar workers, workers in the construction industry, many blacks and Hispanics, are all hard hit. This also gives some idea why the jobless situation does not cause the same anguish in the media coverage as most of it is concentrated among young people, immigrants, illegal immigrants, Hispanics, minorities, and in service and construction industry type occupations. This creates a fragile situation from a social cohesion perspective especially as the lower middle class is also in the same situation and this combined with the working class blue collar and service and construction workers is a large segmet of society....

A lot of intense give and take to reconcile the House and Senate versions of the Stimulus bill, and the resulting outcome of a $789 billion stimulus bill. It includes about $70 billion relief for taxpayers from the alternative minumum tax in 2009, and has reductions in investments in health care, education, school renovations and other items of spending. A bipartisan group of Senators led by Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska played a critical role in the final review, keeping the stimulus closer to $700 billion.
