The median income in the US in 2024 is where it was in 2019 before the pandemic at about $83,000 with the upper 10% of the population making about $200,000 having a 5% increase. Median income means 50% of the US population makes above $83,000 and 50% below that. In 2024 compared to 2023 slight increase of about 4% for men compared to women, no change for white households, a drop of 3% for Black households, gains of 5% for Hispanic and Asian households, Census Bureau Report shows.

Overall cost of living prices at grocery stores, for automobiles, and housing rental, is what is impacting people the most and has left people in the lower half of the population with considerable anxieties about making ends meet. At $100,000-$150,000 incomes in the upper third of the population there is saving for colleges that have costs going through the roof and cost of child care that is causing anxiety.

Binyamin Applebaum cites different experts on how U.S. Fed policy could play out in 2017-2019. He cites Fed governor Dudley that there is increased uncertainty under the Trump administration, and other economists who say that aging population, lack of innovation, and steady growth under the Obama administration with falling unemployment, make it unlikely that growth will jump well above 2%. The Fed's own forecasts are for for under 2% growth in 2017 and 2018, and Applebaum says this is not expected to change by much. Janet Yellen does not see a huge stimulus as a positive, says Applebaum, because it would increase the deficit at the wrong time. He cites Yellen who prefers to see more fiscal space now that unemployment is down to 4.6%. Steady growth in the view of Fed officials has taken up much of the backlog of people looking for work since the 2008 crisis. Yellen sees some fiscal space as desirable with high debt to GDP ratio at 77 percent, so that the government could respond to some adverse event in the future. OPEC and Russian oil producers are planning to increase oil production by 400,000 barrels a day for each month through 2022. Demand is increasing with economic recovery and this will lead to higher oil prices. Oil prices are now $80 a barrel in October 2021. Shortages of natural gas and high prices are leading power generation companies to use oil in place of natural gas. This will increase demand for oil by 500,000 barrels a day. Oil export revenue was cut in half to $119 billion for Saudi Arabia in 2020 and Saudis want to see higher prices to make up for lost revenue. OPEC + that includes Russia decided to end a price war during the Trump administration and this time have designed a strategy that will gradually push up prices. In recent years shale oil producers in the US quickly responded to higher prices of oil and increased production. After the pandemic in March 2020 American shale oil producers in 2021 are not increasing production. This gives OPEC+ better ability to set oil prices at higher levels. ...

Health authorites in Italy, France, Britain India and the U.S, have hesitated in reopening schools. Germany and Denmark have reopened schools with no increase in infections with schools following specific policy including mandatory masks, air circulation rules, and careful preparation of schools to ensure social distancing rules are respected. Other countries reopening schools are Austria, Norway, Finland, Australia, New Zealand.

Schools in German states are reopen for about 1 month now, with a positive experience after careful preparation. Italy faces difficulty reopening its economy as people going back to work find it difficult, particularly women,with childcare provided by grandparents no longer an option, and lack of daycare. Opening of schools in Italy would help in reopening the economy, as well as provide relief to parents and children, when done carefully.

The US and Japan are coordinating efforts to limit transfer of sensitive technology to China and increase trade and cooperation within the G-7 in high technology sectors. Efforts are being coordinated with South Korea. Janet Yellen says the IMF has overblown the effects on the world economy from the US decoupling from China. IMF reports have also in addition presented India incorrectly as a non aligned country, when it is a close partner of the US. In 2023 US is the largest trade partner of India.The US position is to limit flows of technology in sectors considered vital, and continue world trade in other areas with China. US is committed to friendshoring to India, Vietnam and other countries. Germany's three parties CDU, Greens and SPD are reversing close trade and technology links with China. This is also the policy of the Modi administration which seeks close trade and technology ties to US and EU. Differences between the Christian Democrats and the CSU over immigration and Merkel's open door policy are only one of the issues for a new Merkel government. There are differences between the CDU and the Free Democrats. Add to this the difference between the Greens and the Free Democrats on environment and business policies.  As a result 2 months after the German election no clear agreement has been reached for a new government made up of the CDU, CSU, Free Democrats and the Greens.  It looks like a difficult coalition to form requiring all the skills of chancellor Merkel and her allies, and in uncharted territory. The FDP leader Lindner sees a 50-50 chance for the talks. The Greens do not want a new election. Merkel's CDU party won about 33% of the vote. To not form a minority government she needs the FDP and the Greens to get over 50% of voters represented in the new government.

Daniel Yergin cites an estimate by IHS Cambridge Energy Associates which shows oil from shale and dense rock, which was about 1 million barrels a day in 2011, could reach 3 million barrels a day 2020. North Dakota where much of the production is taking place is now fourth in oil production in the U.S. after Texas, Alaska, and California, and is likely to move up to second place. U.S. imports of oil come primarily from Canada 25%, Mexico 11%, Venezuela 9%, and the Persian Gulf 16%. Canadian oil sands development has increased production and the completion of the Keystone pipeline will increase the share of oil imports from Canada. This is shifting the dynamic of oil away from the Persian Gulf, with the volatile politics in the region, and more towards North America.

About 65,000 tests are being done on Americans each day. The need is for 150,000 tests a day say public health officials. California with twice the population of New York has done 77,000 tests compared to 122,000 in New York. Texas has done only 21,000 states by comparison. A new terminal is taking shape at 41st st and 8th Ave. in New York City. This is the new $10 billion Port Authority Bus Terminal. NYT taks a look at the design of this new terminal that will replace one that had become old and haggard looking. Port Authority officials say the old building was a rundown 1950's era building that was a poster child for a failed infrastructure facility. The NYT says this brick building darkened two full blocks of midtown Manhattan. In its place will be a a brighter open looking space that is state of the art and has 2 office towers. Much of the US infrastructure was built in the period of the 1950's and 1960's. Much of it is crumbling and old, and the investment taking place step by step under the Biden plan for rebuilding infrastructure with trillions of dollars in investment is working. Construction will take 8 years by 2032 with coronavirus pandemic delay figured in. Step by step it will change the way cities, highways, airports, bridges will look in the US in the coming decade. ...

For a long time Democrats used Latinos as a captive voter base leading to serious errors in policy such as on the border issues for illegal migrant flow. All this has changed as Latinos started to think for themselves and think independently.

DJT gained 42% overall of the Latino vote, and 47% of the Latino men vote. There are now 36.2 million Latinos eligible to vote 2.53 times the number in 2000 and growing, largest after whites.

It was a decade worth of effort by Republicans to break the monopoly of the Latino vote and its misuse as almost an entitlement by Democrats. In 2016 it was 28 percent of the Latino vote for Republicans, in 2020 it was 35% a 7 percentage point gain, and in 2024 42% another gain of 7 percentage points. It bodes well for America that voters think independently.

WSJ looks at the changes in the way medicine should be practiced in the light of what we have learned from the pandemic.  Medicine practiced before the pandemic and still today relies mainly on a visit to the doctor or specialist who is short of time. There is a shortage of doctors. Patients have many illnesses as a result of decades of neglect of proper nutrition, and exercize habits. Obesity is at about 40% in the U.S. about 30% in the UK and 17% in France, and high also in other parts of the world. These high rates were unknown throughout history and result in many illnesses and increase by four times the vulnerability to the coronavirus. One authority in medicine calls obesity pouring gasoline on a fire for effects of the virus.  A doctor's appointment with doctors short of time with no coordination around a whole range of factors related to obesity, illnesses, health checkups, mental health, is now seen as a heavily handicapped way to practice medicine or for patient healthcare and wellbeing. The alternative is discussed here as the way forward. A  team will be responsible for a patient's care not just an individual doctor. The team would care for general health after a patient's checkup, cover individual illnesses, weight issues, mental health, exercize nutritional needs and other good healthcare habits. Instead of relying on doctors at a time of shortages of doctors the team would be led by nurse practitioners.  A nurse practitioner is someone with a bachelors degree and a masters degree or doctoral degree in nursing with 1000 hours of clinical training. Studies have shown that they are effective and even more effective than individual doctors. Today particularly with the problem of doctors with limited time compounded by the built up problems of decades of bad habits in nutrition and exercize and poor "cultural" habits getting entrenched, there has never been a greater need for a better way to practice real healthcare for a person's wellbeing. Particularly in rural areas with an even larger shortage of doctors the health practitioner led team will play a big role. Patients will under this setting receive more care virtually and get more followup care by phone and video messaging. The numbers tell the story- there are shortages of doctors in USA, Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. In the U.S. shortage of doctors is 55,000 projected to 2033 by Association of American Medical Colleges. There are 290,000 nurse practitioners licensed in the U.S. and 131,0000 physician assistants. The goal will be to get an adequate number of nurse practitioners licensed in this decade to take care of these teams. The pandemic has made virtual visits to doctors and nurse practitioners popular. Medicine reimbursement should and would be practiced on the basis of how well a patient is doing not on a fee for each micro service that is delivered. For this to happen the teams led by the nurse practitioner have to commit to patient education of the benefits from good practices and good habits for nutrition, exercize, caring for oneself. A doctor short of time is hardly the person to carry on this patient education which is where the major opportunities for a new system arise. The virtual care also provides a new medium for patient education and awareness of the risks of getting illnesses, preventive actions to be taken in advance. One approach being tested in California and Texas is for a monthly fee for patients more payments by health plans to doctors or healthcare teams if the patient is healthier. Additional health professionals are added to the team including health coaches, dietitians and medical assistants to increase its effectiveness in counseling and education and monitoring.  The nurse practitioner team approach is already being practiced in parts of the U.S. including the example of New Hampshire shown here, and is predicted to be the approach for primary care in the next decade. ...

French parliamentary election first round results show Macron's party neck and neck with the left parties bloc led by Jean Luc Melenchon. Melenchon is shown in polls to be slightly ahead. The second round of the election is on June 19. Macron is unlikely to have a majority and may need the support of the centre right Les Republicains. The voter demographic of the Macron party and the Les Republicains is older voters, centre right, who tend to vote in larger numbers than younger voters. Voter abstention is high with 48% of the voters having voted in the first round and shows deep voter dissatisfaction with the political elites in France. Before Macron two one term presidents led the government- Sarkozy of the Les Republicains and Hollande of the Socialist party. Macron was Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs minister in the Socialist party Hollande government before he formed his own party in April 2016 months before the election calling for a revitalization of French politics away from the two leading parties. His party was named Le Republique En Marche with younger people not connected to traditional parties.   Macron won a second term with the help of Mr. Melenchon's socialist supporters. Melenchon called for not a single vote for Marie Le Pen the far right candidate in the second round of the presidential election. Melenchon and Marie Le Pen were neck and neck in the first round.  Within Macron's party Louis Philippe a popular prime minister leads a faction that Macron will need to negotiate with in addition to Mr. Melenchon for parliamentary support. There is also a situation of cohabitation that would happen if Mr. Melenchon wins a majority in the National Assembly. Melenchon says the results in the first round "offer an extraordinary opportunity for the destiny of the common homeland to defeat the disastrous politics of the majority, of Macron." In 1997-2002 France went through cohabitation with the president and prime minister from different parties. Lionel Jospin was prime minister with Jacques Chirac as president. Yellow vest protests in 2018, gilets jaunes, were a result of increase in automobile fuel prices and the cost of living, and the general sense of dissatisfaction with policies of president Macron that were seen as not favoring workers and families finding it hard to make ends meet. The working class vote and vote of younger people is evenly split between the far right of Marie Le Pen which does well in rural areas, and the socialists under Melenchon in working class districts of larger cities. In providing support for the European Union and traditional French foreign policy, Macron and the socialist parties have common ground compared to the anti- EU policies of Le Pen resulting in votes cast for Macron that were really for melenchjon in the presidential election in which Macron secured a second term. Cohabitation then offers the popular alternative for a prime minister such as Melenchon for domestic policy and a president in the form of Macron for foreign policy at a critical time for Europe with the EU response to Russia including the embargo. ...

Absurd is a word that would apply to many aspects of New York City- the subway system, the transport infrastructure, the dilapidated sidewalks, the garbage shown here without any proper system of storage and pickup that other cities in Europe and Asia have. It all goes back to indifference from New Yorkers, as this report says New Yorkers go about their business inured by all this. The root cause is lack of investment and the capital markets of the US and of New York crowding out  investment in ,the very things that are essential for the quality and ease of living, sanitation transport infrastructure, public services, education and health. And instead a massive diversion of capital into other areas. The so called Reagan revolution's domestic side, the so called "freedom to choose" domestic side, where a few people choose to make the decisions for capital allocation away from what is in the public's interest.

Democrats face an uphill battle to recover lost territory during the Obama presidency. The efforts to promote Trans Pacific Trade Agreement by Obama against the interests of the unions, working class Americans, is one example of the way president Obama had alienated working class Americans. By being too close to Silicon Valley and failing to understand the changes in states with blue collar workers Democrats lost some of the working class base that had always voted Democratic. On social issues the party drifted too far in one direction in appealing to small groups and in the process drifting away from blue collar workers who were Democratic in the past but did not share the same passion for these issues. About 90% of better educated Americans were liberal yet among blue collar workers who had voted Democratic in the 1990's only 60% were liberal in the same way. The changes in America's landscape with the shift of manufacturing centres away from cities such as Pittsburgh to blue collar suburbs stretching from Michigan and Wisconsin to the Carolinas and the Deep South, created a new blue collar worker base that was more aligned with Republicans on social issues such as abortion, LGBT, and gun control. As a result the conservative base of the Republican Party now finds itself aligned with the blue collar worker, while the Democratic Party in places like New York and California is more aligned with the workers in the financial industry and in Silicon Valley. The improving economy gives more room for Republicans even with policies that might not help its new working class base as it strives to meet policy demands from wealthier Americans in the Republican Party.   ...
