WSJ's Christopher Mims shows the failure of tech startups in low margin industries in which the startups added little real innovation. What he does not say is that these so called "tech startups" have caused a massive capital misallocation and poor productivity of capital for trillions of dollars of American savings. This  happened when the productivity of capital for infrastructure and manufacturing industries in which the US has fallen behind is increasing. It has also caused "crowding out" of essential government investments in infrastructure and manufacturing in the US. In food delivery, used car delivery, online streaming and a whole range of business startups sales are falling as consumers hit by high inflation are budgeting carefully for all expenses. Many are disappearing after years of losses leaving a trail of destruction that includes the unrealized infrastructure and manufacturing that America's communities so badly need.  ...

Germany realizes that it had some advantages in exporting automobiles and machinery to the US, and the EU understands advantages it has in pharmaceuticals exports from Ireland and other countries. EU officials rarely mention this lack of an even playing field with the US. In this report by DW.com German and Austrian research groups say it is best that the EU nor respond to tariffs placed on the EU by the US. Under the 90 day pause to allow time to start negotiations the EU tariff is at 10%, with separate tariff on steel and aluminium, and on car exports. It shows the EU makes loud protests about the US Tariffs, yet knows the need for an even playing field in 2025. The EU and Germany are likely to join other nations Japan, South Koreea, Taiwan, Italy, Britain and seek negotiations with the US for fairness in trade.

Pamela Druckerman is the author of "Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting," which describes her experiences in France and with French ways of child raising. Unlike Ms. Druckerman's book title, the title of this article is about why French parenting is superior, which is not really the point. The point being how Americans can learn from other ways of doing parenting that would make it easier, more effective and less stressful. Brigid Schulte in an article in the Washington Post reviewing Druckerman's observations, says an important reason why French parenting is more relaxed is the comprehensive system of child care in France. This is financed by the government and has wholehearted French support. By contrast the American system is chaotic in comparison with constant worry about finding good child care, leaving mothers with the difficult choice between careers and being stay at home mothers.

Zhang Juwei of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences believes that the overall fertility rate is at most 1.6. A recent report by CASS says the figure of 1.8 used by the government is an overestimation. CASS says its data shows the fertility rate for migrant workers is about 1.14, much lower than people think. The policy for one-child only was introduced 30 years ago, when the fertility rate was close to 3, having fallen to that level from close to 6 in 1960. Does the policy serve China well in the future as China's population ages and there are more older people for younger workers to support, is a question raised by critics in the Chinese media. China's government family planning officials say it applies to 40% of the people, considering the two child policy operating in some areas of the country.

The Deficit Commission setup by US President Obama recommended changes in the tax codes including elimination of the deduction for mortgage interest. It calls for limiting spending on health care, gradually raising the retirement age, and lowering the tax rate. The commission identified $200 billion in discretionary spending cuts, with half coming from defense spending. The federal gasoline tax rate would increase from 2013, increasing by 15 cents a gallon at that point. It would gradually increase the retirement age to 68 by 2050. And combine a reduction in benefits with an increase in taxes on wealthier senior's benefits. It seeks to slow Medicare growth to control health care spending. Other proposals. A freeze on salaries and bonuses of federal employees for three years, to save $15 billion by 2015. And proposes cutting the federal work force by 10% to save additional $13 billion by 2015.

A Links column cites the Oakland California based sustainability think tank's estimate that it takes about 17 million barrels of oil to produce all the plastic bottles for the water which is enough to fuel more than 1 million cars and light trucks for 1 year. Scott Sperling, co-president of THL Partners, one of the oldest private equity firms, says rather than be anticapitalist the Obama administration is capitalism at work, as the restructuring is rebuilding two auto companies through bankruptcy by reducing unsustainable legacy obligations and making the bankruptcy process work right for these two companies. It also helps these firms get a new start. The process of "creative destruction" that helps make capitalism work is put to work in an enlightened way so there is creation as well as destruction, destruction through the tough choices that all stakeholders had to make, and creation through the new structures that are coming up. Preservation also works here through keeping what was good in these firms, which are the employees who had no part in management's mistakes, and workers who may be just as badly trapped in union ways. Scott also explains why the government's offer of 10% ownership shares to debtholders is fair, considering that without the government's money Chrysler would be worth little....

Feinberg was talking to Jim Press since this summer, and leaves Toyota at a time when it doesn't have any respected American face. Its surprising that his new role at Toyota even as a Board member left him away from the day to day operations that he loved doing and was unhappy about his role as mainly a public affairs person. At the same time the events in the credit markets and the broader economy also point to the urgency of having the right leadership in place. This is reflected in the difficulty financing $10 billion of the remaining Chrysler debt in the credit markets with investors reluctant to invest in prevailing market conditions, thus Cerberus and Daimler each took $2 billion in debt to complete the buyout. Top priorities for Chrysler getting the same concessions that the UAW gave GM and Ford in 2005 for health benefits. Tom LaSorda will lead these negotiations as well as look after plant operations and purchasing. Jim Press will lead the effort for product strategy, marketing and shaping Chrysler's new dealer network from the oversized network of 3700 dealers that it has become over the years. As this was his passion at Toyota and he has a decent credibility with Dealers. He also brings knowledge of the Toyota way of constant improvement which he applied in marketing and at the customer level in addition to its well known application in manufacturing....

For example whats the right size for Chrysler and how many models and sales levels and the domestic focus. a lot of these ideas may go out the window to try to get the company to operate successfully. China to introduce local-content requirements for alternative fuel and hybrid cars to qualify for expected subsidies. This is aimed at Toyota which imports parts from japan for the Prius and assembles it in China. National Development and Reform Commission is drafting new rules for the automobile sector. GM's solution to keeping its own technology within the company is to establish its own research center in China. Previously it had a setup research center with its partner Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation which has 1300 employees. The new research center in Shanghai will be devoted to hybrid and other advanced technologies. The way the Chinese market is growing and becoming a key part of GM's global market GM now sees this as a good investment especially in the light of the new local content rules and the fact that with its own research center the technology will not be able to be copied. Note that Honda, Ford and VW also have announced plans for their own research centers....

The unconventional style of Ford CEO Jim Hackett, who comes from a furniture maker in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is confounding some of the Ford management team. Mr. Hackett frequently alludes to a theoretical physicist Geoffrey West in his memos and uses terms such as "think phase" and "clock speed" that require some translation in Ford's management ranks. Ford's profits in 2018 are expected to lag Chrysler and GM in 2018. In one of his moves Hackett recently announced he was pulling Ford out of car manufacturing to focus on SUV's.

A federal committee in the U.S. now recommends no more than 6% of calories come from daily sugar intake not the 10% that is is the current guideline. It is smart to be wary of guidelines set in a different period when Americans and people in other parts of the world were not enough health conscious as they should have been. Artificially high limits set in guidelines serve as a danger to health, particularly as experts say obesity is like pouring gasoline on fire in fighting the coronavirus. Take a look at mean consumption today and it is not even the 10%, it is 13% double of what it should be. Nearly two thirds of Americans aged 1 years or older consumed more than 10% of daily calories in added sugar. And 70% of U.S. adults over 20 years are obese or overweight according to 2015-2016 figures from CDC. Today the figures from Europe and Asia, Latin America are also alarmingly high for obesity rates. Added sugar comes from processed foods from soda and pasta sauce to cereal and yogurt, and honey, sugar itself. Sugar sweetened beverages are common and dangerous. A 16 ounce grande pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks has 50 grams of sugar or 10% of a 2000 calories diet. The committee in the U.S. wants to see people eat healthy diets and does not want to discourage healthy foods like fruit and milk which people are not eating enough. It wants to see a shift away from processed foods to foods that have good health outcomes such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat and poultry. The beverage producers such as Coca Cola and Pepsi are a major source of resistance , as are Confectioners association, and other producers that benefit from setting the guidelines at 10%. It is not that for 3 decades as the obesity levels rose to the shocking and dismal health levels of today that the ideas of what constitutes a healthy diet were not known. It was just that we as a people did not care enough to fight for what is safe and healthy against whatever resistance was put up by producers with their vested interests, just as we as a people did not care enough to to fight to keep local manufacturing in place and the jobs and healthy communities across our land. A gram of sugar equals 4 calories. For a 2000 calories a day diet that is 120 calories to stay within the 6% that we should not exceed. Make a habit of looking at each packaged product and add up the added sugar grams and calories. ...

Sebarros of the WSJ takes a closer look at the key words used by U.S. president Trump in rallies in city after city during the 2016 election campaign and in the months before the Congressional elections in 2018. Analysis by the WSJ counted the unique two word phrases, how often Trump highlighted topics, the content of audience respones in 48 post election rally speeches through Oct 27.  In 2018 the words "tax cuts,"fake news," and "health care," appeared more often than in 2017 after the Republican party's win in passing a tax cut. Other phrases used frequently were "law enforcement," "North Korea," and "Supreme Court" after the win in nominating Judge Kavanaugh. The use of the 2 word phrases are carefully done. The words "fake news" were not used during sensitive periods such as when pipe bombs were mailed to government offices, yet resumed few weeks later. His own name is the seventh most used word, even for someone such as Mr. Trump, showing that behind the impromptu remarks there is a carefully worded effort to steer voters in a particular direction with carefully developed appeals. Another example is when the Dow Jones averages were reaching new highs in September and October Mr. Trump highlighted the stock market growth, and then when volatility increased by November said much less on this topic. Graphs by Jessica Wang provide a good look at how frequently and in what manner Mr. Trump has continued his unique campaigning style before the 2018 Congressional elections, with two word appeals to already receptive audiences. The audience participation is a singular feature and the words "U.S.A." were used in 85% of the rallies with "Build that Wall" at 65% as the next most frequent.  Much of it is repetitive in city after city and the WSJ analysis shows that the major television networks including Fox News are not covering the speeches from beginning to end as they did before, only C-Span public network does. To receptive audiences in carefully scripted surroundings, including larger ones such as the Toyota Center Houston, where larger numbers of supporters worried about immigration, health care, trade, and other issues can come together, president Trump has rallied core supporters with this kind of appeal. ...

GM is restructuring to transform itself into a global company with growing Asian sales and shifting volumes overseas. It is shifting employee and capital base to more countries overseas to create new opportunities and make GM a new and different company, a global company. Incentives pay part of the gas price for buyers, and more fuel efficient SUV's also chip in to pay gas costs. Americans are not out to get off the SUV's just yet, as fuel effficiency standards go up.The investments oil companies are making are expected to provide a payoff in increased production by 2008-2009, and the new oil policy of Saudi Arabia kicks in (see Naimi at CSIS 2006 meeting). The situation eases up for families accustomed to carrying kids around or hauling stuff around. The second wave of the coronavirus is bigger than the first with the U.S. exceeding 100,000 cases a day for many days in November and hospitalizations doubling to 93,000 from the beginning to the end of November. There is also the fatigue with the virus for healthcare workers and the people, and loss of income for workers leading to income and food insecurity. In this situation a second stimulus to help people and businesses is a urgent priority for Congress. A group of bipartisan senators have put together  $908 billion stimulus plan to get through the Congress by December 11. This is a compromise between the two parties. Supporting the bill are Cassidy, Romney, and Collins for Republicans and Manchin, Warner, Cassidy for Democrats. It would provide- 1. $300 a week in federal unemployment benefits for 4 months. 2. $160 billion for state and local governments. 3. Temporary moratorium on coronavirus related lawsutis. 4. Additional funding for small business, schools, health care, transit, student loans. There is growing agitation among influential senators against the leadership in both parties of McConnell and Schumer, with the sense that the leadership has failed to recognize how critical the issue of emergency relief is for tens of millions of Americans. This is its only hope for passage with the bickering of the leadership on both sides. ...
