The federal government in India provides support for loans to farmers on the interest rates paid after the interest rate increase by the central bank RBI. An additional budgetary provision for Rs 34,856 crores has been made for this purpose for the period 2022-2023 to 2024-2025. It will keep interest rates below 7% for farmers. This will support agri-loans of upto 3 lakh rupees for farmers in India. This is to provide adequate agricultural credit for the rural economy of India. Short term agriculture credit would be at 4% interest per year when loan is repaid on time.

The fast food industry in US relies on the franchise model which has been deeply affected by depressed wages, poor working conditions and other worker abuses. Governor Gavin Newsom signs into law on Labor Day 2022, the FAST Recovery Act which established a state council tasked with setting wage standards for the entire franchise and food industry. Workers will now get a seat at the table to set standards for wages, and health and safety standards for the industry. Wages will be set at $22 per hour starting next year for about half a million workers in the franchise and fast food industry in California.

This Guardian report provides a timeline for lunar exploration. The last Apollo Moon missions date back to 1972 with Apollo 17. It lasted 12 days with the first crewed space flight to the moon taking Schmitt and Cernan to moon's surface while Evans orbited above. Since then it has been quiet for lunar exploration till Chang'e 3 lander and rover from China in 2011 put China on the moon, followed by Chang'e 5 in 2020. Today August 23, 2023 India puts its own moon lander and rover on the South Pole of the moon which is expected to have water.

Increased use of remote work is leading to vacant office space with occupancy of office towers falling. This has led to the coining of the term "urban doom loop" as more and more office space goes vacant and real estate companies default on mortgages or lose money. Less use of office space hits retail stores in the same area leading to losses in the state including a hit to tax revenues. The Laken Riley Act has as its sponsor Katie Britt of Alabama, and cosponsors Democrats Ruben Gallego of Arizona and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. Apple makes most of its products in China. This exposes Apple to high risk with the Chinese tariff set at 46% on April 2, 2025. If it passes on the tariff to customers it faces a loss in sales, if it does not pass onto customers the higher tariff price and cuts margins it will affect Apple profits. Apple's high margin strategy by making in China is now at risk. Apple had been given a warning to shift from over concentrating manufacturing in China. It did not heed the warning since 2016 and only made small shifts of manufacturing to India and Vietnam.

And for GM there are about 1 million of them, (96,000 active workers, 497,000 retired workers and also the dependents of retired workers) costing GM $4.8 billion on health care. At $1500 per car for GM costs on health care vs. $200 per car for health care costs at Toyota. The difference is $1300. If this is factored in to the profitability of small cars then the field is skewed one way. On a $23,000 car that is a 5% margin right there for adiffernce of $1100 in health care costs. If this is the way profit is calculated on small cars with this health care differential factored in then there is always a muddleheaded tendency to product he bigger cars and trucks because they can absorb this differential better. But it doesn't make sense that this should dictate how the business is run. And it could lead to serious mistakes which appears to be the situation at the Detroit companies, the way they went into the downturn right into 2008 with a product mix that was going to be hit hardest by a change in customer preferences. ...

Montes and Cordoba of the WSJ provide this exceptional account of corruption at the state level in Mexico. Ironically the very effort to reduce the power of centralized administration with PRI winning repeated elections and having a monopoly in power for many years, led to the decentralization and passing on power and money to the state governments in Mexico after the 1990's. But this was done without putting in the checks and balances required. Instead too much power was now concentrated in the hands of the state governments which appointed even the judges and officials at all levels including election bodies. Federal transfers of tax money to states increased 20 fold to $88 billion in 2016, according to this report.  The result 41 state governors faced corruption charges between 2000 and 2013, according to the Mexican Competitiveness Institute. This includes the state of Veracruz where state coffers are almost empty and there is no money to pay municipal bodies. The PRI governor of Veracruz Mr. Duarte supported president Pena Nieto, and was at 43 years age cited as the new face of the young PRI. This report  says he is nowhere to be found now that $2.5 billion in state funds cannot be verified. Other states are Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo, Coahuila, Sonora, where corruption charges remain. The Veracruz scandal is among the worst and is the focus of attention for the public in Mexico. At this point president Pena Nieto of PRI has about 12% popularity rating, lowest of any modern Mexican president.   ...

Black Rock's collection of $10 trillion in passive assets or shares in firms that it manages for investors, including pension funds, brings with it voting rights for these shares. About 45% of investors have now expressed interest in doing the voting themselves. The voting provides Black Rock and other passive index tracking funds enormous leverage over thousands of American companies.

This voting rights power it can use to support Black Rock's stance on social issues. Recently Republican senators introduced a bill calling for individual investors in passive funds to have the option of voting their own shares instead of Black Rock or some passive index tracking fund doing it for them. 

Black Rock has responded with a voting choice platform that now has $520 billion of the $10 trillion it manages for investors.

Alibaba, the internet commerce company in China, will split into 6 independently run companies. This reorganization comes as the company had grown too large and become a competing center for financial direction for China rivalling the government. Jack Ma was critical of financial regulation in China leading to a period in which the internet company founder was seen as providing a different direction for the Chinese economy from that of Xi Jinping. As China cracked down on some of the problems from lack of regulation of the economy, pollution of the environment,  worsening of climate change, and wide disparities in wealth in the country, Jack Ma was becoming increasing at odds with the new trend for better distribution of wealth, and attention to problems of neglected regions, tackling problems of corruption that had developed in the boom period of the economy.

Infrastructure spending under president Duterte of the Philippines has increased from 4% of GDP to about 6-7%. Many new projects are started as part of the $177 billion building program. This includes the Clark City project to house 1.2 million people and government offices to move congestion out of Manila. Duterte's plans include cutting traffic down by one third on the artery along the sea that takes 2 million people into Manila from the outskirts every day.

Duterte has continued infrastructure projects planned by his predecessor, and 69% of Filipinos support this infrastructure building program. Conservative spending under his predecessor gives Mr. Duterte more room for increasing spending. Indonesia at 72nd rank and Philippines at 96th rank have fallen behind in infrastructure development in a World Economic Forum recent survey of 141 countries.

She has a Bachelors in Economics from St Stephens, and studied political science, international relations. Gamini Singla, 23 years, is from Punjab's Sangrur, and has AB Tech from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh. She chose Sociology as optional subject. 

All three want to contribute to education, women's empowerment and to society. All three did not pass on the first attempt. They did mostly self-study and used newspapers to follow current affairs.

Pipelines to Corpus Christi have reached capacity as US energy production reaches record levels says this report in WSJ. In the first half of 2023 2 million barrels a day passed through this pipeline. About half of the 4.1 million barrels a day the US shipped abroad were loaded onto tankers on this part of the Texas coastline. This oil helped Europe during the shortages after the closing of access to Russian oil supplies. Because Corpus Christi has terminals that make it cheaper to ship oil out it has become a dominant hub in the US for shipments overseas. It is the closest deepwater port to the Permian basin in West Texas and New Mexico. Corpus Christ is also transitioning to a future where hydrogen is produced for energy by applying for $8 billion from president Biden's renewable energy infrastructure package.

Samaras believes that the lower tax rate of 15% would help change the Greek cultural trait of evading taxes becaue it would be on the honor of people to pay such a basic tax. EU leaders are skeptical that lower taxes are the right policy to reduce the deficit. This adds to the political uncertainty as the new government would have to implement the measures agreed to between the current Greek government and the EU leaders. A similiar situation existed in Portugal but the recent elections there, participation of the opposition party in talks, and the newly elected government conducting its own negotiations, has removed that element of uncertainty which exists in Greece. ...

How ArvinMeritor navigated the treacherous waters of the automotive parts buzsiness since 2000 when the company was formed taking in the automotive business of Rockwell International in Troy, Michigan. The combination was designed to bring the automotive parts business for roof and door systems, chassis and wheel products with the comercial truck business which makes drivetrain systems and components like axles, drivelines and braking systems. The business is in turmoil and ArvinMeritor last recorded a profit in 2005. Here is how they did it. First, the combination provided some linited diversification for the cyclicality of the automotive business passenger cars and trucking together. By 2004 the foreign makers especially the Japanese were taking market share from the Detroit Big Three car makers which only accelerated after that when the Big Three overconcentrated on SUV's and had no competitive car lineup to match the Japanese in 2007 and 2008. The Big three closed plants and companies like ArvinMeritor closed plants also. In the last couple of years first GM and then Ford began to emphasize emerging market countries like China, Russia, Brazil and India. Wagoner GM's CEO in citing improved results in 2008 specifically referred to the $500 million profit in Brazil as making this possible. He also said that when investors see the improved results so early they are forgetting that the model that GM has setup has changed completely from the model that investors were used to in previous years which was a large and growing US focussed market base. Now its a global focussed market base with particular focus on emerging markets. ArvinMeritor has followed this pattern and set up parts plants in new countries like Russia to supply the Big Three's plants there. But it appears from Phil Martens, Arvin Innovation's CEO's statement that only 20% of global automotive sales for ArvinInnovation, the automobile part of the busines that is being setup as a separate company, are coming from the Big Three of Detroit. And 65% of the sales are coming from outside North America. Which suggests that 15% of sales are coming from the foreign carmakers in North America. ArvinMeritor closed 11 plants in North America and the new company Arvin Innovation has 42 facilities in 16 countries with sales of $2.2 billion in fiscal 2007. ...

The U.S. has placed sanctions on Turkey and demanded the release of a U.S. pastor detained in Turkey.

As part of the effort to get Britain to cut all that unnecessary fat which is ruinous for healthy living, Britain will now ban all buy one get one free deals on unhealthy food products. All food in restaurants and pubs will soon be required to post the calories count on menus, starting with the bigger chains. Boris Johnson says he is supporting the NHS and the national campaign for fitness and cutting out all the unnecessary calories that have crept into people's food habits and intake. He never intended this but Johnson like others have learned from one experience that has compressed several lifetimes of experience trying to recover from the virus without the fitness of body that is needed.      ...

DY Chandrachud and his father CY Chandrachud will soon be the first father son combination of Supreme Court Chief Justices in Indian history. This has not happened in Britain or US. CY Chandrachud was Chief Justice of the SupremeCourt of India from 1978 to 1985. DY Chandrachud was part of a three member bench of the Indian Supreme Court that looked at The Modi government vaccination policy in April 2021 and gave a ruling that formed the basis of Mr. Modi's action for a new and broader vaccination policy that ensured access to the entire Indian population of 1.2 billion people.

DY Chandrachud studied at St Stephens College Delhi, Delhi University Law, and Harvard for his Masters degree in Law. His experience includes heading the Uttar Pradesh High Court in Allahabad and holding legal positions in Mumbai.

Ten year euro denominated bonds of Portugal had a yield of about 3.58% in June 2014, down from about 6% at the beginning of 2014. Ireland's 10 year bonds have a yield of 2.36%, down from 3.42% at the beginning of 2014. In comparison 10 year German Bunds yield about 1.25% in June 2014. There is strong investor demand for the higher yield on these bonds in a low interest rate environment. Portugal exited a 78 billion euro three year bailout without getting a precautionary credit line which was seen favorably by credit ratings agencies.

He is former managing director of Moody's. The system is rife he says with conflicts of interest and the whole system has failed and is still in failing mode. DJT plans for 25% tariff on all imported cars goes into effect April 2, 2025. It is intended to promote additional investment in the US auto industry, boosting jobs and wages in the US. These countries have now wrapped their behavior around national sentiment even though they very well know how the US has looked out for Europe, and especially China throughout cataclysmic events in the 20th century and the 21st century such as foreign occupation and failures in modernization. By 2015 the US which had given Europe the Marshall Plan and helped Japan rebuild from the ashes of World War II, South Korea rebuild from the devastation of the Korean war, and China rebuild after the failed industrialization experiments of the 1960's and 1970's, was now facing nations that only saw this as a One Way Street, making the US look stupid and showing a degree of irresponsible behaviour on fentanyl, drug and migrant trafficking  by Canada Mexico and China that has few parallels in history. The narrative from the US is that the US allowed Europe, Japan and South Korea, and Mexico as a manufacturing base for these countries 25 years since the 1970's when Japanese Toyota vehicles made inroads into the US market to help these countries recover, a post Marshall Plan benefit given to Europe and Asia. During 1995-2015 a series of weak administrations Clinton-Bush-Obama allowed the US manufacturing base to decline under a falsely premised globalization that served US financial interests but hurt US manufacturing towns and communities across the country.  This means BMW, VW cars imported from Germany, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Honda cars from Japan, Hyundai and Kia cars from South Korea, Chinese EV vehicles, and cars made in Mexico for Asian and European makers, all will face this tariff. ...
