The progression of myopia increased by 35% by one estimate after 3 years of the pandemic. 3M based in Minnesota makes a $5.5 billion settlement for earplugs over hearing loss complaints. It is the largest mass tort in history with 300,000 claims by veterans who served in the military, says the WSJ. Goldman Sachs is shown to have used the Primary Dealer Credit Facility 212 times for an amount of nearly $600 billion. Morgan Stanley is shown to have used the overnight Fed lending program 212 times from March 2008 to March 2009. The Wall Street Journal editorial concludes that this makes it impossible for someone to argue that either bank would have survived the financial storm without the Fed's help. The same is true for General Electric. GE tapped the Fed's Commercial Paper Funding Facility 12 times for more than $15 billion And with the help of the FDIC's debt guarantee program GE sold $60 billion of government guaranteed debt. GE and Citicorp are shown to be the heaviest users of that program from November 2008 to Juy 2009. The overwhelming lesson, says this editorial, is to ensure that there is no repeat of this kind of situation. And the new Congress needs to tighten the too-big-to-fail criteria....

Vanguard Index funds attracted $233 billion in new investment in 2014, according to Morningstar. Of this $40 billion went into the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, $27.5 billion into the Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund, and $9 billion into the Vanguard Total International Bond Market Index Fund. The poorer returns from actively managed funds with high fees and the PIMCO Total Return Fund led to this shift into index funds. A rare look inside the hydropower that produces 16% of the world's electricity, that is now endangered. Researchers at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have a solution- to use the topography created by the melting glaciers including new lakes and areas that can be made into reservoirs that would be used to generate electricity. It is important to remember that Abraham Lincoln questioned some church religiosity and practices, yet had a profound belief in the Bible, his Devotional based on the Bible that was published in London in 1854 was one that he kept with him for most of the years serving the Nation. For close to 70% of the population having a belief in the Bible, and in God, is a good sign for the future of the Nation as it approaches it's 250th year, and a community that settled these British colonies and a vast continent since the 1600's for 400 years. ...

RIM says its Blackberry subscriber base dropped to about 76 million from 79 million the prior quarter. RIM reports earnings of $98 million, revenue declined to $2.68 billion from $4.18 billion the prior year quarter. The company's cash position at $2.9 billion was the same as the prior quarter.
