New regulations permit foreign investors to invest at least $100 million to setup multibrand retail operations in cities with populations of more than 1 millon people. Foreign multibrand retailers are at this time not permitted to directly invest in domestic retailers selling to consumers. A government panel "the Committee of Secretaries," proposed the change, which now goes to the federal cabinet for approval. The change means international retailers like Wal-Mart can sell to Indian consumers through partnerships with Indian retailers, and can own upto 51% of such local joint ventures. Of the investment at least half must go to setting up back-end infrastructure such as cold storage and laboratories. India has a huge retail market of an estimated $450 billion but much of the retail sector has fragmented smaller operations and mom and pop stores. Tata, Reliance, Bharti, Godrej and other local companies have made an effort to change this and formed alliances with Tesco, Wal-Mart, and other international retailers. One of the pressing needs is the building of back up infrastructure- cold storage, retail facilities, etc. This change means Wal-Mart, Carrefour, Metro AG can now enter the retail market. The prior efforts of these companies were restricted to wholesale stores such as Metro Cash & Carry India Pvt. Ltd, Wal-Mart's technical support for Bharti's retail brand of Easyday stores, and UK based Tesco's back-end support to Trent Ltd's Star Bazaar stores....

Karl Rove, advisor to President George W. Bush, and organizer behind American Crossroads political action committee, says the election will be decided by the higher support for Romney among independents and the high turnout of Republican voters. The prediction for the voter turnout among Republicans is 36% Republican vs. 35% Democratic, according to Gallup. This compares with the 39% Republican and 37% Democratic in 2004, and 39% Democratic 29% Republican in 2008. The early and absente ballot voting advantage has significantly gone down almost by half for Democrats as more Republicans cast early votes in swing states like Ohio. Closing statements and crowds also appear to confirm this trend. Rove sees this as 51% to 48% favoring the Republicans. The addition of swing states - Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania also appears to suggest that a broader movement is underway that is happening right now in the final week before the election on Nov. 6, 2012. Rove focusses on the numbers. A behavioural assessment shows the importance in this campaign of the centrist position adopted by Romney in the closing months of the campaign; the selection of Ryan which gave Romney support from the Republican conservative base so that he could talk freely about his record in the liberal state of Massachusetts to independent voters and women, and most important the clear message to voters focussed on a five point plan to get the economy recovery were critical in shaping these numbers....

Lawrence Katz, Harvard labor economist, talks to Friedman about the jobs crisis in the U.S.. Katz identifies three jobs crises occurring at the same time today. One is the drop in the demand for goods and services that resulted from the longer term effects of the financial crisis of 2008, with rising foreclosures, weak housing markets, bad debt on the balance sheets of banks, and interest rates at close to zero reducing the scope of action by the Federal Reserve bank. The second, is the widespread long term unemployment with workers dropping out of the labor market. The third, is the nature of new factories and hiring. Work in new factories is done through increased automation, information technology and fewer workers. As a result job creation is a fraction of what it was in the past. Not mentioned here is the shrinking of the public sector under the strain of budget deficits for local, state and federal government. This leads to the question of how America will create jobs in the future. Katz believes the answer is creating more "hubs," networked urban areas like Austin, Silicon Valley, and Raleigh-Durham, by bringing together universities, high-tech manufacturers, software providers, and startup companies, to cooperate in creating new products that enhance people's lives worldwide. This has to be done by the private sector and government working together to build the infrastructure and make the investments in education, training of workers, and equipment for new job creation....

One of the severe problems noted in the recall disaster of 2010 was that practically all important quality and safety decisions are made in Japan. Without key American decisionmakers in the process this leaves Toyota exposed to all sorts of errors like the errors that ocurred in stalling the National Highway and Traffic Safety investigations into acceleration and braking accidents in Toyota vehicles. To compound theses errors managment at Toyota focussed on the $100 million in savings that avoiding or minimizing the recalls would generate, as revealed in internal documents. Early warning signs of similiar problems in Europe were not linked to problems in the U.S.. All this was ocurring against the backdrop of a change in management at Toyota- with the Toyota family once again regaining control of the company- and the failure of the management under Watanabe and previous CEO's to put quality before rapid expansion. The new changes are to have 2 new senior executive positions in the U.S. to focus on quality and safety. A chief safety executive will focus on safety and recalls, and a chief quality officer coming from the top ranks of the American operation will now sit on a special committee for Global Quality led by CEO Akio Toyoda. The commitee for Global Quality will address the global quality issues around one table with the highest ranking executives at Toyota right at the table to talk things out. ...

How U.S. -Chinese relations today parallel relations between the U.S. and Japan in the late eighties and early nineties. The dnagers of extrapolating from the enormous growth in China today and Japan then, into the future decades. The prospect say anlaysts that the model of development in Japan then, and China today, with an emphasis of state driven direction, works for several decades and then starts sputtering. At some point it becomes a model that cannot be sustained. Some analysts like Arthur Kroeber, of Dragonomics, an economic forecasting firm based in Beijing, see it as a model that is right for that stage of developmment in a country's progress from an agricultural to an industrial economy. But there are critical differences with Japan, for one China has not completed its transition to urbanization as it has large parts of the country that are rural. And industrialization has increased the level of inequality in China. See the articles citing Gini coeficcients for China which show significant deterioration. The other difference is that Japan still had a pioneering secotr of companies in the export sector from Toyota to Panasonic, whereas China's companies in most secotrs are state run or heavily financed by state run banks. Japan has one other striking difference in that it has a democratic form of government and a thriving and independent media, which makes Japan's transition to a post industrial economy with an increase in private initiative less difficult....

Carr's account of the distraction promoted by the Internet, services like Google and Twitter in a book called "The Shallows." He says Google is in the business of distraction and Twitter is neurological heroin. His account is very well informed and researched say reviewers of his book. Research is cited frequently. a neuroscientist is quoted by Carr that our brains are being trained to pay attention to crap. And scarier still, Carr shows what this does to humans ordinary tendency to relate to others, empathy and feeling the emotions of compassion for others. The more distracted we become we don't experience these emotions in the same way. He shows how the working memory has room for only a limited number of items 2-4 items, and whereas a book reader can take his own time to process, the web can lead one to do this speedily and in a scattered way. So the manner in which previous generations absorbed information is now disturbed, making it harder to concentrate. The emphasis, as it is for any new technology, is how to use it wisely, and avoid its misuse. The statistics show Americans spending an average of 8.5 hours per day using the PC, TV or Smartphone, and checking their emails 30-40 times per hour, and teenagers receiving or sending 2,272 monthly text messages, which may suggest that things are beyond a wise limit....

The Reagan Memo released by WSJ and the June op-ed in WSJ by Glenn Hubbard, a Romney economc advisor, point to the way an economc recovery like that accomplished under Reagan could be achieved if Romney takes office. Krugman points out that contrary to thinking Reagan actually increased spending, partly through defense programs and partly achieved by federal transfers to state governments that increased spending when the deficit had not reached the levels it has today. Also important is the cause of the economic slump when Reagan took office, which was deliberately caused by Federal Reserve increasing interest rates to control surging inflation. The Federal Reserve reversed policy and lowered rates during Reagan's term in office and supported the other growth inducing policies of the Reagan administration. Improving business confidence by promoting expectations for consistent growth and stable policy was part of the game plan of the Reagan economic team led by George Shultz, as is evident from the memo. Krugman says the situation is different this time as interest rates are approaching zero and the U.S. is recovering from a housing bubble at the same time that spending by local and state governments is declining as the Stimuus spending of 2009 fades. Under Reagan in the first quarter of 1984, and for Obama in the first quarter of 2012- compared to 4 years earlier, real per capita government spending was 14.4% higher than previously for Reagan and 6.4% for Obama. ...

Japan's regulatory structure for the nuclear power industry is weak because of the dual role played by the regulator- Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It regulates the nuclear power industry, and also promotes Japanese nuclear technology in Japan and overseas. The tasks are separated in the U.S. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission supervises nuclear plants in the U.S. It is independent of the Department of Energy which does research and promotes nuclear power. An earlier effort to correct this dual role arrangement in Japan failed, when an independent Nuclear Safety Commission was created under the cabinet. This body was never given the authority to inspect companies and mandate changes. A body that supports the commission has 4000 scientists and staff. It does research in nuclear technologies, but it has ended up becoming nothing more than a think tank, in the words of a former commission deputy chairman. What makes this situation worse, is the practice of amakudari, or "descent from heaven," a practice in Japan where senior Ministry officials retire young and take up positions in the private sector at companies like Tokyo Electric Power Company. In recent years most of the retired officials have taken positions in the energy sector. In fact Japan's Bar association investigated problems after a 2007 earthquake that shutdown a TEPCO nuclear plant. It recommended an independent regulator. The Democratic Party of Japan supported this idea before taking power in 2009. ...

Aldi stores is a chain of discount grocery stores based in Germany. The chain was started by the Albrecht Brothers who ran a family retail business in the 1950's. In 1961 they founded Aldi using the first letters of Albrecht and Discount. Their formula is becoming popular in the U.S. It focusses on smaller store size, making it easier to start new stores and find space in cities. Each store will carry fewer items and fewer varieties of each item than a Kroger or a Wal-Mart store. About 95% of the items carry the Aldi name. This makes it possible for Aldi to offer lower prices and higher quality. Trader Joe's is the upscale version of Aldi's and is run by the Albrecht Family Trust. Germans have experienced difficult periods in two postwar phases and reunification, and thrifty purchases are typical of consumer behaviour. Germans prefer to use their own grocery bags when grocery shopping as stores charge for the bags. The experience with this kind of customer gives Aldi an advantage in selling to thrifty buyers in the U.S. The chain is expanding in the U.S. with an estimated 1000 stores. It has an estimated 8000 stores worldwide. Compared to Wal-Mart, Aldi keeps a low profile and has little difficulty in locating in cities like New York. The smaller store concept and value offered helps in finding good store locations and support from local communities....

Helena Morrissey of the 30% Club has helped increase the representation of women on Board of Directors in Britain to 23%. This is nearly double the figure in 2010. Helena Morrissey uses a non-confrontational approach, getting men to join the organization and having them act as advocates with other men in senior positions. She learned this after using other approaches which were less effective. She focusses on telling chairman of the boards that having women on the board provides different perspectives, and points to studies that show about 30% lets a minority voice be heard. Homogenous boards have been known to provide no new thinking or fresh perspective, a problem at many companies. The opportunity opened up with the finsncial crisis of 2008 and widespread opinion that the boards had failed to understand the crisis that was coming. She and 14 other women got the support of 2 prominent board chairmen in 2010 to start the 30's Club. A Commision by the new government led by Lord Davies provided additional impetus by recommending that 25% of a board be voluntarily set for women. Early in her career Helena was turned down for a promotion because she had a baby. She has nine children, which her husband a journalist helps take care of at home, making her situation even more unique. Forero gives a detailed account of the setup of about 400 huge wind turbines larger than the size of a Airbus 380 in a windy area of Bahia state by a Brazilian company Renova Energia. It is an area that experts say is nearly perfect for the steady wind needed. Brazil has increased its wind generation capacity to 3% of its energy generation in 3 years since the first auction for companies seeking to build wind farms. By 2021 energy planners in Brazil see this going up to 10% of its energy generating capacity. New limits on the generation of hydropower is shifting the focus to speeding up the development of wind energy by the government of Dilma Roussef. State owned banks provide loans to companies like Renova Energia. New technology from French, Dutch, and Spanish companies with advanced sensors that shift the position of blades to adapt to wind conditions, the size of windmills of over 400 feet, and 1.6 megawatt turbines, make wind energy a realistic option for Brazil's expanding energy needs growing at 5% a year. French energy company Alsthom has a plant outside Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, to manufacture windmill components. This helps meet Brazilian government requirements for a certain percentage of local manufacuring of components....

ECB president, Mario Draghi, is interviewed at his office in Frankfurt by the Wall Street Journal's Blackstone, Karnitschnig, and Thomson. Draghi quotes economist Rudi Dornbusch, who told him in the old days that the Europeans were rich enough to afford paying for it if everybody didn't work. Draghi, was head of the Bank of Italy, before becoming president of the ECB. He is acutely aware of the problems faced by Italy and other countries like Spain which have let labor markets become rigid, with extensive job protections and generous benefits for the unemployed. The result is that employers are reluctant to hire and young people face high unemployment rates- as high as 50% in Spain. For this reason Draghi sees the old social model in Europe as obsolete and already out. Draghi's sees austerity measures and spending cuts with the structural changes underway in Spain, Italy and other countries as the only way to generate economic renewal. On the Long Term Financing Operation launched by the ECB in Dec. 2011, Draghi says there was agreement within the ECB and the decision was unanimous. He makes it one of his objectives to achieve as much consensus as he can, to do what is right for Europe and to do it together with his colleagues in the ECB and the EU. That financing operation, and the binding deficit controls achieved at a recent summit of European leaders, he sees as all part of the pathway to fiscal union. ...

Social unrest grows in Russia as oil falls to $36 a barrrel and Russian growth slows from 8% to the point where its entering arecession and layoffs and salary cuts are taking place at many companies. In the Siberian town of Barnaul large protests took place when the authorites cancelled subsidized public transportation tickets for 200,000 pensioners. The government has adraft law that requires companies to inform the government about impending layoffs and salary cuts. And there is agradual devaluation of the ruble so that there is less adverse reaction in the economy. THe ruble has lost 111% of its value since it reached its peak in August. The government has required restraint in covering the crisis and no mention of the word crisis or reference to social unrest as there is considerable fear in the government and public's mind from the previous crisis days when the ruble collapsed under President Yeltsin causing wwidespread poverty and social disruption and economic failures. Strikes by migrant workers in the Urals city of Yektarinburg. The governments approach is to provide some kind of ressure outlet and let things cool off by reversing actions like the decision to let pensioners use their discounted public transit tickets. As a result of the downturn 7500 firms have informed the government they intend to layoff people and 207,000 workers have had working hours reduced since October 2008. And the government is drawing up alist of significant enterprises needing a bailout....

Israel's Yesh Atid (there is a future) party came in second with 19 seats after the party of prime minister Netanyahu in Jan 2013 Israeli elecions. Yair Lapid helped organize the middle class protests for social justice in the summer of 2011. He founded the Yesh Atid party to fight for better opportunities for the struggling middle class. Many of the votes came from Tel Aviv. Lapid writes a column for the newspaper Yediot Aharonot under the title, "Where's the money?" He writes in the newspaper: "This is the big question asked by Israel's middle class, the same sector on whose behalf I am going into politics. Where's the money? Why is it that the productive sector, which pays the taxes, fufills its obligations, performs reserve duy and carries the entire country on its back, doesn't see the money?" The summer protests were about an Israeli middle class that is falling behind like the middle class in the U.S. Yair Lapid started as a print journalist and went on to anchor the Channel 2 Friday evening news. His father is a Holocaust survivor from Budapest, Hungary, who went on to become Justice minister. Unlike his father who was strongly secular, Yatid's support comes from all parts of Israeli society including the ultra-religious, and is mainly focussed on the middle class. ...

THe Economist says that the efforts of banks like Chase JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo to rewrite history are wrong and dangerous. They are wrong because there was acomplete collapse of confidence by December 2009 and these banks benfitted from state guarantees and government efforts to help the banks without which Goldman, and Morgan Stanley and other banks would be in serious difficulty or in danger of collapsing. It is dangerous because it is being used to distort the process of putting in place the right compensation incentives to avoid overleveraging and risk taking, putting in place prudent regulation, and taking all the right steps to prevent a future banking crisis, with the argument that this should apply only to the weaker banks. It is dangerous on two other points. The banking regulations should apply to the entire banking industry, and especially on banks that are too big to fail. These banks now are content to leave the toxic assets on their books where they are and consider government efforts to purchase these toxic loans and securoities or otherwise resolve these assets in some kind of good bank-bad bank scheme, as unnecessary. All this is happening even as the banks themselves remain poorly capitalized, even after raising funds in the capital markets recently, and remain very dependent on the government. The danger is that this may make everyone complacent in the event of a developing new storm....

Shoichiro Toyoda's son Akio takes over as new CEO of Toyota. He got the MBA degree from Babson College in Massachusetts and joined the company at 27. Initially Shoichiro was opposed to Akio joining the company. Even today with the Toyoda family owning only 2% of company shares there is a faction that supports Akio and a faction that dislikes the founding family's involvement in running the company. So the job has not been an easy one for Akio. At one point Akio admitted himself into a hospital early in his career after friction with one of his bosses. Things settled down after that and eventually Akio headed the China operations, where he engineered the merger of Tinajin with FAW to give Toyota a more capable partner to expand in China. And to get Akio to take on the new role, the elders at Toyota like his father and others had to ask Fujio Cho to stay on as chairman, even though he has a back ailment that made him keen on resigning. Current CEO Watanabe will become vice chairman and help Cho with his duties. The idea may be to have more experienced people at the top as Akio takes over and makes changes to the conservative culture and bureaucratic ways of Toyota. This eases the transition especially if there are people who are wary of the founding family and Akio's more direct and bolder style of management....

Huge losses sustained by sovereign wealth funds. Estimated $350 billion for Gulf foreign reserve funds and SWF's, according to RGE Monitor's Rachel Ziemba, or 27% of assets. Sovereign Wealth funds are either using their funds for supporting their local banks as in the Gulf areas, or buying back stakes of cash strapped western banks like RBS in the case of China. Russia, China and other countries are using their SWF's for stimulus spending. And Russia, Gulf economies that are dependent on oil prices, are looking at possible sale of foreign assets at oil prices between $50 and a deterioration to $25. Only China has a surplus that is sustained through the last quarter of 2008, but this is changing quickly as imports pick up after the stimulus kicks in, and exports drop precipitiously in 2010. South Korea and Russia have also learned of the need to have liquid safe investments preferably in dollars in the current crisis, as they have learned how large capital outflows can get in a short time. And the US is not looking at these large capital inflows from overseas as a benevolent thing, because it overvalues American assets, and leads to all sorts of distortions in liquidity and pricing of risk that contributed to the current crisis. In short the whole situation with SWF's has a suprising ending, as with everything in the current crisis, nothing worked out as expected or planned....

The Labor Department's rate of labor underutilization is 14.8% of thepotential workforce, much higher than the 8.1% unemployment rate. Which means that a lot of workers are not able to make the fullest use of their skills. If unemployment stays high for a very long period some workers lose their skills and become less employable. THat could leave the floor for unemployment at amuch higher level. Something like this is happening now and stay with us as the unemployment rate grows and the underutilization of labor rate with it. Physiscists call it "hysteresis"., a kind of laggard impact of some sustained force. An example is if you squeeze a nerf ball for so long that it doesn't bounce back when you release it. Higher underutilization of labor which could hit 20% by 2010 at the rate at which job losses are ocurring of half a million a month, would mean pressure on wages and fears of deflation, lower tax revenues and fears of persistent deficits, less cash to invest and companies having less capital to invest leading to lower earnings. And falling behind the curve is what Krugman fears could be happening now, even with the large stimulus and budget of the new President, because of a series of problems ocurring at the same time and reinforcing each other. The Fed's Term Asset Backed Loan Facility (TALF), by which the Fed would give money to banks on very favorable terms to loan out to others including hedge funds who would go out and buy consumer loan backed securities, has barely made it off the ground. Its vital if consumer loan markets for everything from cars to other products is to get off the ground. The large layoff and job losses are a result of the lack of credit to finance purchases creating unneeeded manufacturing capacity, with the ensuing job losses only exacerbating sales. Investors worried about defaults have stayed away from consumer loan backed securities. The figures tell the story. According to Dealogic only $3 billion of these asset backed securities were sold in Jan-Feb 2009, down from $1 trillion in 2006. The TALF has alimit of $200 billion for the early stage, but could grow to $1 trillion as more asset classes are added. There are only about 10 deals in progress but most of them are on hold. Nissan Ford Credit and Huntington Bank are preparing to sell securties backed by car buyers. The outcry over bonuses at AIG, makes investors wary of public outcry if they were to profit unduly from the TALF, and hedge funds don't like some of the language in the agreements they have to sign with the gbanks and the Fed that would have them liable for losses, and by stimulus legislation that restricts use of foreign workers....

The drop in oil prices and the credit crunch is driving a push for mergers in the oil industry. Suncor Energy of Canda is acquiring Petro-Canada for about $15 billion in stock,bringing together two of Canada's oil sands and oil companies. To do the deal Suncor will giv each Petro-Canada shareholder 1,28 shares of the combined company for each share of Petro-Canda. Suncor will shareholders will end up owning 60% of the new company and Petro-Canada shareholders 40%. Suncor founded in 1953 is the second largest oil sands producer. It posted profit of $4.1 billion on sales of $24.3 billion, debt load of $5.8 billion and has market value of $23.4 billion. Petro-Canada was established by the government of Canada in 1975 and in involved in exploration, production and distribution of oil and natural gas, with operations in Canda, Trinidad and Tobago, and Syria. The government reduced its stake to 19% in 2004. Petro-Canda had operating profit of $7 billion on $22.2 billion in sales, and $2.7 billion debt, with market value of $11.6 billion on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Its stock has suffered a larger decline, and shareholders like the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, which owns 3.3% of Petro-Canada, was looking for ways to get more value out of the company with pressure to sell some of its assets or the whole company. Both companies have cut spending by a third, amid falling oil prices....

The latest Commerzbank estimates show Germany and Japan, both with large capital goods industry, showing declining GDP of about 7% in 2009. That is a steep decline stemming from the lower demand in industrializing countries like China, India and other countries. The German government has only committed so far 88 billion euros ($120 billion) or 3.5% of GDP. To get some idea what the German government is thinking look at the GDP numbers from the government, which show only a 2.25% decline. Compare this with other estimates closer to Commerzbank's estimate- BNP Paribas shows 5.4% contraction, Deutsche Bank 5%, German think tank DIW 4-5% drop. And the government estimate scheduled date for revision is April 29. This may explain the gap between what the Obama administration is saying to the Europeans: you need further stimulus, and what the Chancellor Merkel is saying: we will be just fine. The French government is saying saying the same thing the German government is saying. But France with a smaller export industry is expected to see a drop of less than 4%, the USA 4%, by Commerzbank estimates. Experts say as German elections approach in September, Merkel is going to have to respond with larger stimulus amid large job losses. And sentiment may be shifting in France as job losses mount, as evidenced by large turnout across France calling on the government to help in recent demonstrations....

Only 9% of the total square footage of hospitals built in the USA used this method according to Modern Healthcare an industry publication, so this is one more area in which health care savings can be found- and there may be many more areas like this- which goes to show that ingenuity, experimenting with new ways and asking questions about old ways of doing things, can generate large savings, especially when it becomes a necessity. As the old proverb says, necessity is the mother of invention. Design-build differs from traditional construction in that the architect and the construction company come from the same company. They understand each other so well that they can finish each other's sentences. This cuts out the waste and back and forth that goes on with changes that are made, as the changes are minimal. This is a big source of the savings. This is similiar to the integration of design and manufacturing experts into one team in the auto and other industries. HBE Corporation of St Louis is the company that handled this work. Its asmall outfit with 500 people and this is the largest hopital it has built, so there is potential for doing alot more in this field for health care savings....

How Starbucks changed from a customer oriented experience like the ones at expresso bars in Italy, to add sandwiches, lunches and drive through. And in the process diluted its customer oriented experience (conversation, place to meet European cafe style) and the experience of real coffee, upto the point that its main competitor became Dunkin Donuts in many places. Consumer Reports rates McDonalds drip coffee better than Starbucks. Baristas at Starbucks lament the loss of the atmosphere of the early Starbucks as sandwiches and other items are pushed in a fast food type environment. One could have seen this coming as Schultz was a Brooklyn kid who seemed to struggle with his fascination for the Italian expresso bars he saw in Italy, and his New York and American ways of popularizing this experience by building hundreds of locations and expanding quickly. In the process Starbucks became a different place and a different company without quite realizing it. The Brooklyn kid in Schultz won over the other side that remained intrigued by his experience in Italy. This is described in his autobiography, "Pour Your Heart Into It," somewhere the magic disappeared. This is amazing that a place can change and competition can creep in on you when you kind of lose your identity, and forget where you started, the dream and vision. How Sonatrach of Algeria is working in joint relationships with Statoil-Hydro of Norway, both national oil companies, who are creating a new pattern in bringing capital and technology resources of national oil companies together to tackle projects throughout the world. Statoil for example, has been invited to work with Gazprom on Shtokman gas field project in the Barents Sea. This alliance has taken may forms including Statol taking a 10% ownership in the Algerian Petroleum Institute and setting up a training program which has already trained 6000 Algerian Sonatrach employees in western health and safety standards. This Institute trains Algerian engineers. As Statoil and Sonatrach look outside for new exploration as their reserves are declining, they are working together in different parts of the world. Sonatrach and Statoil-Hydro launched a successful joint bid for 2 offshore gas deposits in Egypt. And Statoil has given Sonatrach equity in one of its North Sea gas fields and given it capacity at a liquefied natural-gas import terminal in Cove Point, Maryland. Algeria has set goals of having international reserves account for 30% of its production by 2015 by taking exploration tracts in places like Libya. Note that this type of collaboration is increasing. PFC Energy a consulting firm says that were 2 such deals for technical cooperaton and sharing access to resources and markets in 2000, in 2006 there were 16. So expect more of this type of collaboration and joint work....

Making the shift to smaller cars and putting its money where its mouth is meant converting Ford from a large vehicle company to a company that makes a lot of smaller cars, and this meant Ford would have to convert to smaller cars a lot of its truck and SUV plants and close some of the other plants. Alan Mulally is doing just that as he moves to give Ford a completely new direction What is not surprising but is still more than a bit disconcerting is the skepticism he is meeting from executives inside the company that Ford can only make money building larger vehicles even in the face of a market that is moving in the opposite direction. So again and again Alan is having to ask the question "what does a sustainable Ford Motor look like?" Shows that the American car companies are not only caught with the wrong bag of product mix but are in some kind of culture shock as the ground below them is changing. Alan also is focused on a global market almost as though he realizes that from now on there is only a global market to deal with not the sort of American market that existed in the past, so he reminds other Ford executives that the global market share of larger vehicles is only 15%, and as if to sound incredulous asks them and you want us to continue to invest limited resources in that market?...
