WSJ says that is not how Floridans saw it when DeSantis was elected with 59.4% of the vote. For cases to double Kerala has 72 days, compared to a national average of 8 days. With total 437 cases and 3 deaths Kerala has shown "the importance of early tracking, screening, home quarantine, strict isolation and public participation," says Dr. B Iqbal, chairman of the Kerala state expert committee on coronavirus in an interview with DW. com. The first case was a medical student arriving from Wuhan on Jan. 24, diagnosed 6 days later. The Indian state of Chhatisgarh has taken a proactive approach color zoning districts. Of 28 districts 23 are free of coronavirus. Mediators Pakistan, Turkey sought to separate Iranian nuclear issue to a second stage with a vague Iranian commitment to discuss the issue and future dragging of feet by Iran. The US DJT administration has made this the only issue that must be settled first before a settlement can be reached, and not by a repeat of the half hearted effort by the Obama administration that led to reconstituting Iran's nuclear effort a second time with US financial assistance. For a day on Saturday it appeared that mediators Pakistan and Turkey had accomplished for Iran just that, to the alarm of Republicans in general and in particular senior Senator Graham. Many sections of the media including the WSJ and the business community, see this as a repetition of the mistakes made by Obama and his administration. Not only did Obama not act to work with Republicans on a border policy- simply protecting himself from Republican attack by deportation policies. Obama continued the war in Afghanistan/Iraq for the same reason to protect his chances for reelection. He also used immigration policy to get the Hispanic vote in the closing months of the reelection year. Obama's other foreign policy failure was in believing Iran had been persuaded to give up nuclear weapons, and gave Iran the financial backing that could easily be shifted from economic to military uses and rebuild the nuclear program,  which he has handed to a future Republican adminstration. Obama also ignored how this would affect the economic wellbeing of the Iranian people with the kind of protests and suppression that has happened in 2026. Democrats and the media, some Republicans, are simply ignoring these errors and have never really faced up to the problems in the Middle East and asked the question why there are 5 decades of wars in the Middle East, and coups, strife, wars for the entire period since 1950. In this situation the US, China, India, EU, Brazil and other nations can learn from this experience and act to secure alternative sources of energy, speed up renewable energy transition, and rapidly end all dependence/intervention on a perpetually strife ridden Middle East, which much of the US and international media in a baffling way ignores or does not say outright. ...

Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan visits the White House to meet president Trump. Mr. Trump welcomes Khan and lauds the Pakistani leader as an athlete and a leader. He tells him trade deals can be struck, future was bright and flow of aid can be turned on. Trump makes a casual offer to help mediate the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, even though it is certain that nothing comes out of this, because of India's position not welcoming other countries doing any mediation. At the heart of this reconciliation is Afghanistan and president Trump's conviction that Pakistan can get the U.S. out of Afghanistan. Trump stated this- "I think Pakistan is going to help us out, to extricate ourselves. Pakistan is going to make a difference." The idea is that Pakistan can persuade the militants, the Taliban, into a face saving settlement that will allow American troops to come home. Mr. Khan in turn stated that Pakistan had given up its policy of using Afghanistan to give it "strategic depth" against India. The army would not go behind the back of the civilian government to conduct a policy of its own. Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Trump are impatient to get this done. The deadline of Mr. Pompeo is September 1 and talks continue between the Taliban and representatives from Afghanistan. The U.S. effort is handled by Zalmay Khalizad. How Afghanistan is governed in the future is not determined and Pakistan has a key role to play in making a sensible solution take place if it decides that something new has to be tried.  In the past U.S. governments from both parties lacked the ability to take a good hard look at the facts the origin and evolution of this dispute. To tackle it directly with a willingness not only to call it for what it is but also to give the other side an incentive to try new solutions. The inventive style of the Trump administration to tackle the situation directly, but also come up with new and novel solutions is what is now being tried. ...

US president Biden authorizes $350 million in immediate military assistance to Ukraine. Western leaders now believe that NATO countries are at risk if they do not help stop the invasion, as it now appears that Russia seeks to restore a sphere of influence across Eastern Europe that existed under the Soviet Union. In 1956 Soviet tanks entered Budapest, Hungary. A situation reminiscent of that in Hungary is now taking place in Ukraine in 2022. Earlier the Russian view of Ukraine neutrality was accepted by western leaders- the situation has changed during the last week, as it is now perceived that Russia seeks to change the situation in Eastern Europe. This completely alters western Europe's and America's view of the situation in Ukraine. All this has happened in a matter of days, and in a few weeks. On the Russian side the invasion is not popular with street protests in Moscow and people on the street skeptical about the invasion and its objectives. The view is beginning to emerge that this invasion only breaks the fraternal ties between the Belarus, Ukrainian and Russian peoples that have existed for centuries. In this sense the politics and governments of the present are not relevant as much as the shared history. Ironically it is this shared history that Mr. Putin seemed to want to assert. Yet it ignored the fact that Ukraine also has a shared history with Poland and the Baltic countries and the desire for a different system of government is common to all the people's of the world. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia and India; UK and Scotland or Ireland; Sweden, Norway and Denmark, Canada, Britain and the US; Hungary, Austria and Germany; all have a shared history yet the people in each country at different periods of history have made their own choices and decided what they would do as independent countries.  ...

BBC News looks at the Judge who will be handling the Trump New York indictment, Juan Merchan. He began his legal career in 1994 after graduating from Hofstra University School of Law. He worked in the Nassau County District Attorney's Office before becoming deputy assistant attorney general for Nassau County in 1999, and assistant attorney general for Nassau and Suffolk counties. He has served as a justice in the New York County Supreme Court since 2009. Merchan is described as a serious jurist, smart and even tempered, and a no-nonsense judge who is always in control of his courtroom.

Merchan has already handled a case against the Trump Organization and Mr. Weisselberg. In that courtroom he is reported to have said that he would not in any way allow anyone to bring up a selective prosecution claim, or claim that this is some sort of novel prosecution, that Weisselberg was somehow being targeted because of his association with Mr. Trump.

The devastating floods have increased the urgency of securing financing for Pakistan to avoid any risks of debt default. This report in WSJ says Pakistan has negotiated $4 billion for the current fiscal year that began in July 1, 2022 with the IMF Board meeting to approve it on Monday Oct. 29, 2022. The IMF required Pakistan to secure the remaining additional funding for the fiscal year. For this part of the deal China has rolled over $10 billion in debt, Saudi Arabia $3 billion and UAE $2.5 billion. Saudis will provide $1.2 billion for oil on deferred payments basis. Saudis will invest $1 billion in Pakistan, and Qatar will invest $3 billion in Pakistan.

Finance Minister Ismail says Pakistan is not in danger of default now but it depends on the viability of the IMF program. The heavy monsoon floods have put a reported half of the country under water, and the economic impact says Ismail is about $10 billion.

In addition to the heat wave, climate change, air pollution, degradation of natural resources, deforestation and soil erosion, there is the problem of access to drinking water. About 80% of Pakistan's population lack access to clean drinking water. By 2040 experts say Pakistan could be the most water stressed country in the region. A big problem is the lack of financial resources to tackle climate change with the buildup of debt. Another problem is the lack of a master plan for development that takes into account the need for protecting the environment and makes investment in renewable energy.

In this part of northern Burgundy, France, small towns and rural area are feeling the neglect that is happening. Neglect that Macron has done little about. Doctors offices close, transport services are reduced, other public services are being cut, the cost of living remains a problem for families struggling to make a living. This report in NYT looks at the situation that makes people turn to the RN party. Yet as shown in other reports where RN party is already governing solutions have not been found to these problems. In one report on July 5 from another rural part of France near the Pyrenees the RN city government was mainly about the looks and television not solutions, providing clean neighborhoods,  saying crime was down when this was not serious to begin with. The RN is not about investing in the rural areas of France, in small and midsized towns. Only the United Front Populaire socialist parties are planning to invest $140 billion to provide solutions and yet both Macron and the RN of Le Pen say derogatory things about the socialist parties alliance painting them as extreme and not being honest that rural France needs investment, just as rural America needs investment, for a better life. ...

Apoorva Mandavilli of the NYT looks at the huge task of renovating the aging infrastructure of America's schools, like this one East High in Denver. The average school building in America is over 50 years old. Having clean air in the schools would have reduced the incidence of Covid by 50%, say studies. The General Accountability Office GAO says 41% of school districts in the US have at least half of their buildings, a total of 36,000 buildings, that need to completely replace their heating cooling and air ventilation systems. The money is there, secured by president Biden with $200 billion from programs like the American Rescue Plan, but much of it remains unspent because of a lack of clear administration guidance on clean air and an official to oversee this effort, and expert guidance, securing equipment in the supply chain.

The Supreme Court of the US lets stand the ruling of lower courts and the National Labor Relations Board that says unions can organize and represent workers on the docks in container terminal at South Charleston. The Charleston terminal is in right-to-work state South Carolina. It is the fourth largest container terminal on the East Coast after NY NJ Terminal, Port of Savannah Terminal, and Port of Virginia. A new terminal is being built at Savannah on 395 acres to handle addition 2 million containers per year. Savannah, Georgia is another right-to-work state. Georgia Ports Authority now says it is talking to the ILA and the decision for union labor will not affect its plans for expansion. The Biden administration has supported cost of living action through increase in workers wages and helping workers organize through unions after a long period when labor was not able to push for a fair wage and the relationships between labor and employers were excessively drifting against workers. Rail strikes were settled with an agreement, auto strikes were settled with Biden on the picket lines in Detroit for the United Auto workers. International Longshoremans Association labor efforts at NLRB are part of this story of Biden and the changing face of labor in the US.   ...

BBC News looks at the situation in Bordeaux, France, after the Front Populaire wins the election. The NFP has a seasoned candidate in this parliamentary seat who can greet people by name. The RN candidate is 18 years old and is new to campaigning, showing that the RN of Le Pen had to field candidates with very little time for preparation in a snap election. People in Bordeaux and NFP supporters say 2025 and 2026 are years in which the Front Populaire has to deliver on cost of living actions to improve the lives of people struggling to make a living. For this to happen Macron has to give the NFP the chance to govern in the interests of the people of France and not obstruct actions needed to tackle cost of living. The Socialist parties have the experience to govern and obstruction would only further reduce the popularity of the Les Republicains and Macron's party.
