Fiat-Chrysler's Sergio Marchionne tells an automotive conference that the new fuel efficiency targets proposed by the Obama administration will be "an incredible stimulus for the American auto industry." He is confident that the new 2025 standards can be achieved. He said the industry had a bad habit of crying wolf and emphasized the need to get there so that the U.S. auto industry could be at the forefront of the changes taking place. He also cautioned the industry to not get comfortable with China's role as an emerging market that helped increase global sales. That growth is slowing and it presents another potential risk for the automakers- the potential for China to export 10% of what it makes to overseas markets including the U.S. and Europe. All of which increases the urgency of building the industrial base and competitiveness of the automotive industry in the U.S.

Tracy Dolgin, CEO of the YES cable sports network takes a novel approach to managing by reversing the Peter Principle. The Peter Principle pointed out that people start by being good at doing what they do, every time they get promoted they manage more and do less, to the point that they are not hands on anymore and are into meetings, shuffling paper, sending too many memos, often into political interdepartmental rivalry, making them worse at their job in terms of productive effort. Dolgin's says she created a flat organization and hired people who were good at doing and with functional expertise who loved to be hands on.

Segregated enclaves are considered "parallel societies" that do not fit into Danish culture or Danish law.  In the past these immigrant communities stayed separate culturally from the rest of the country where people did not learn Danish and participate in the wider society, and yet benefitted from the welfare system's benefits. Young children in preschools will now be required to take 25 hours a week in preschools that teach the  Danish language and help them integrate culturally.

In Britain 6500 nursing homes are seen as "not fit for purpose" of elderly care. They are now seen as possibly closing without an investment of $15 billion pounds to make them fit for use. This also shows the neglect of elderly care in countries such as the UK, and the U.S. A clear distortion of priorities when so much money is being wasted in misallocation on the fringes of tech and elsewhere, without money for basic infrastructure and basic services. It also shows a mistaken set of priorities that have taken over in recent decades,a lack of decent respect for people as they get older in life. Countries such as Brazil neglected basic sanitation in the country worsening health and epidemics while building large soccer stadiums in the north and financing the Olympics. U.S. Britain, E.U. neglected elderly care and infrastructure, in the tech led booms of the past two decades, and pushed money into the wrong places through a distorted set of priorities. ...

Scott McCartney retires from the WSJ after 29 years. Since 2001 he writes the Middle Seat column in the WSJ to give readers better ideas on how to travel. Looking back he says things have not become that much better these days, even a bit worse with crowded planes and costly flights.

GM CEO Wagoner was asked to resign by the Obama admninistration. The news was given Wagoner by Steven Rattner, who heads the auto industry task force setup by President Obama, at Rattner's office at Treasury. Mr Henderson, GM's Chief Operating Officer will fill in for Wagoner. When Wagoner assumed office in 2000 GM's stock price was $70, now it is $3.62, and GM capitalization is $2.21 billion in March 2009. Since 2004 GM has not earned aprofit, and has logged $82 billion in losses. Right upto the end the board of directors and lead directors backed Wagoner, even when the company was short of cash in the waning days of the Bush administration, and public opinion was very critical of the way management and unions had driven the company into the ground, all through this they held on, showing how hard it is to get an entrenched board and management doing things the wrong way. Now the Obama administration has taken years of festering issues in the auto industry and at auto companies head on. Not only Wagoner, the task force is working with GM to replace a majority of its directors. Kent Kresa a longtime director is to serve as chairman of GM. The President in a speech today on the auto industry said that he was rejecting the plans for restructuring provided by both GM and Chrysler. He is giving GM 60 days to come up with a new plan. The government would provide suffficient working capital for the next 60 days, during which time a revamped board and top management would have to come up with new restructuring plan. Obama made it clear that an expedited government sponsored bankruptcy was a clear option. And officials said that the inordinate amounts of debt at both GM and Chrysler have to be scrubbed, and bankruptcy would be "quick rinse" to rid the companies of much of their debt and contractual obligations. And the government would stand behind the warranties of both companies. For Chrysler the government is giving 30 daysto come up with a new plan, and time to reach an agreement for Fiat to work to revive Chrysler. And Obama reassured the public that FIat would have to repay the government before it could take money from the new Fiat run Chrysler out of the country. If Fiat and Chrysler reach an agreement and only then would the government step in with $6 billion in loans. If not Chrysler would be allowed to collapse....

The NHS Nightingale hospital was built in 9 days by converting the ExCel convention center in east London. This is the largest hospital of this kind ever built with 4000 beds. Prince Charles opening it by video link from his home in Scotland said it was " a spectacular and almost unbelievable feat of work." The hospital is named after the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale. The British government drafted hundreds of army engineers to help contractors build the hospital in record time. It will need 16,000 staff and hundreds of volunteers.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence in the UK is urging adults to use a tape measure to check that their waist circumference does not exceed half their height. Other BMI guidelines do not provide an accurate measure of body fat and other ways are needed. Waist and height measure are "simple and effective" way to know if someone is overweight, says NICE. Today a majority of people in UK between 45 and 74 years are overweight. This is true in many parts of the world.

The Trump administration suspended all flights from Europe on March 13, about one month after suspending all flights from China. This report in the NYT says there were about 10,000 estimated undetected infections in New York on March 1 when only 1 case of coronavirus was confirmed. It also says that researchers have tracked the mutations of the virus in all American states and found that most of it came from New York. Could the Trump administration have acted earlier than March 13 to stop flights from Europe? The state and city authorites in New York did not take the threat seriously by March 13, making it not clear that they would have acted earlier.   In places like Michigan which has Italian Fiat owned Chrysler operations, and automotive connections with Munich, Germany, reports show the virus coming from Europe. Munich based auto companies have extensive operations in China. In Louisiana the Mardi Gras celebrations around Feb. 25, received large numbers of visitors from New York, with research showing the virus mutations in Louisiana originated in New York. There was little awareness of the seriousness of the virus because of lack of past experience as happened in Asian countries. So that these kinds of public events bringing huge numbers of people in close contact were allowed to happen, and people who were cautious were likely to be ridiculed or shoved aside. New York continued to hold public gatherings at Madison Square Gardens and sports stadiums well into March, with complete disregard of the dangers, a decision made by local authorites.   ...

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat-Chrysler told a conference in Michigan -"these are people who did not grow up and become conditioned to doing business in Detroit. " He cited this as one reason the new generation of leaders at the U.S. auto companies had embraced the new fuel efficiency standards. Another point he made that was well received was that "anybody who surrenders 14 years before the date ought not to be in business." He was referring to the 2025 deadline for the new standards. This view was well accepted by the other auto companies and by the UAW workers union, showing the big change that has come about in the U.S. auto industry.

Of these letters mostly all commend the remarkable efforts of Joe Biden. One by Stanley Saulny stands out. He commends president Biden for his remarkable stamina during the Air Force Academy graduation. He says saluting 921 times and shaking hands 921 times as Biden did that day could not be done without considerable arm and shoulder pain, yet Biden did no complain or boast of his feat, as he wanted to do this for every graduating student. Mr Saunlny is a physician and graduated years ago from the same Air Force Academy where he attended this event as father of a graduating student. He tripped and the media distorted reality as there was a sandbag placed in a trippable way that could not be seen.

"As you know I am 5 foot 10 on the outside and I was way too fat" says the British prime minister about the time he was admitted to hospital for the coronavirus. The British prime minister now goes for a run with his dog first thing in the morning. He says about his life after the coronavirus recovery that he is steadily building up his fitness. He has good things to say about the run, the exercize in the morning. After the run says Boris everything for the rest of the day is a breeze. A quite gentle run in the beginning that is getting faster and faster as he improves his fitness.  One does not have to go to the gym to lose weight. There is always the great outdoors, space outside the home. As part of the effort to get Britain to cut all that unnecessary fat which is ruinous for healthy living, Britain will now ban all buy one get one free deals on unhealthy food products. All food in restaurants and pubs will soon be required to post the calories count on menus, starting with the bigger chains. Boris Johnson says he is supporting the NHS and the national campaign for fitness and cutting out all the unnecessary calories that have crept into people's food habits and intake. He never intended this but Johnson like others have learned from one experience that has compressed several lifetimes of experience trying to recover from the virus without the fitness of body that is needed.      ...

In a speech at the Peterson Institute Marchionne says Europe has not addressed its problem of 30% overcapacity for making automobiles. He is handling two jobs one at Fiat and one at Chrysler, about which he says: "I am the only one who can guarantee this transfer. GM surprised German officials on June 28, 2009, with the information that Opel would need an additional 300 million euros. Also significant was the development that Fiat learned of earlier in the week that Opel's finances were much worse than previously disclosed by GM. Instead of a $1.5 billion loss Opel expects a loss of $2 billion to $3 billion for 2009. Fiat pulled out of the talks. At that point the German government put together a deal in a memorandum of understanding in the next 36 hours, with Magna International taking a 20% stake in the new Opel, the Russian government through its bank Sberbank taking 35% stake, GM taking 35%, and Opel's employees taking 10%. The German government's position was focussed on protecting the 25,000 Opel jobs in Germany, with both labor leaders and politicians supporting this. Angela Merkel, the German leader spoke on phone with Mr Putin of Russia to firm up the deal. Magna International, a Canadian autoparts supplier with Austrian roots provides the carmaking expertise. Cooperation with Russian carmaker Gaz raises the prospect of selling 500,000 Opel vehicles in Russia. Opel produces about 2 million cars in Europe and has 50,000 employees. ...
