Opinion polls in late July 2015 showed Syriza with support of 33% from Greek voters, well ahead of other parties. After accepting the third EU bailout following a "no" vote in a referendum in early July, prime minister Tsipras still remains popular in Greece. On August 20, Tsipras announced snap elections to win a new mandate to implement the program of cuts that enabled Greece to get 96 billion euros in the third bailout program. Some members of his own party remain opposed to the bailout, and Tsipras relied on opposition parties support to get approval of the bailout in the Greek parliament.

The government set a target of 60 million tourists. At 40 million this seems too much as quieter neighborhoods of Kyoto and other cities face intrusion from tourists. The Sanseito Party is making this an issue in parliamentary elections in Japan challenging ruling LDP party of prime minister Shigeru Ishida. These parties say that even with population declines and 120 million dropping to 100 million Japan will still have the population to run its economy. These nationalist parties also protest buying of land and property by wealthy foreign tourists in cities like Tokyo and crimes by some immigrants.

Appeals Court says US president DJT National Guard deployment in Washington DC is legal. The court said that "the district of Columbia is a federal district created by Congress," that the president as head of the DC National Guard has the right to it's deployment in DC. It was done by DJT to reduce the crime and lawlessness behavior in the Nation's capital. DC is a much safer place today.

A centrist 73 years, and mentor of Macron, the head of the Movement Democrate allied to Macron's Renaissance party is appointed to succceed Banrnier as PM of France. Macron hit a new low of public approval rating of 23% by Ipsos. Scholz of Germany is at 18% following reaching 65% in Jan 2022. Bayrou says-“I am fully aware of the Himalaya of difficulties that lie before us,” Bayrou says he would strive for a “necessary reconciliation” with Melenchon of France Unbowed party and Marie Le Pen of National Rally on the left and right of the centrist Macron. These are mere labels- both Melenchon and Marie Le Pen want to see higher public spending and no cuts in the Budget for 2025, Macron is not eager for cuts, Barnier wanted to cut the budget to cut the growing deficit but this is not a time to cut spending as investment is needed to grow the economy and meet needs for public services and cost of living assistance. Macron was taken by surprise by Barnier's approach leading to a no confidence vote and Barnier resigning.  ...

In this interview just before Mario Draghi of the ECB announced a 1 trillion euro program of monetary easing in the eurozone, Renzi calls on European leaders to carefully balance austerity with growth efforts. British prime minister Starmer has introduced new legislation to "smash the gangs" that have people smuggling networks and made 150,000 illegal small boat crossings into the UK since 2018. Small boat crossings have started in 2025 with more people packed into small dinghies and 1098 making the crossing in January 2025.

The bill includes counterterorism powers to Border Force, police, National Crime Agency to target gangs. 

Migrants at sea in the Channel who refuse rescue by the French will face five years in prison as part of a new set of offences inthe bill- The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill.

Narendra Modi is now the choice of the BJP party in India to lead it against the ruling Congress party of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. The corruption in government and the slowing growth have improved the chances of Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat state in northwestern India, near Mumbai. Modi has done well in Gujarat state in a number of areas- from foreign investment in manufacturing, infrastructure development, and better governance. His plan is to replicate this at the national level. His slogan is minimum government and maximum governance.

Japanese prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, of the Democratic Party of Japan, is pressing forward with a plan to increase Japan's 5% consumption tax to 10% by 2015. Noda told reporters in Tokyo: "There is no waiting in responding to this question" of how to strengthen the social security system. Adding that Japan is "faced with an aging society and a declining birthrate unprecedented in the history of humankind and we cannot sidestep the challenge." In theory the Liberal Democratic party supports this, but in reality the LDP sees a chance to force a new election. Japan has a lower consumption tax rate compared to other OECD countries. It was last increased in 1997. Polls show both parties are deeply unpopular- the LDP has 17% support from voters, the DPJ has 16%, and over 50% support no party. An increase in the consumption tax comes with its own risks for the Japanese economy, as Japanese exporters have been hit hard by the yen's rapid rise in the last year. At 76-77 yen to the dollar Japanese automakers find making compact cars in Japan unprofitable. A chip maker Elpida recently filed for bankruptcy, with its CEO saying he never imagined the yen at this level. Another difficulty maybe the size of the increase in the consumption tax, effectively doubling it at a time when European markets for Japanese exports are showing a marked slowdown....

Francois Bayrou the new PM of France speaks a dialect of the Pyrenees mountains, is mayor of Pau, and was a school teacher before entering politics. He has a disdain for extreme positions on both sides left and right, including polarizing politics of Sarkozy. He gave key support to Macron at the right time when he needed it to run for president. He gets along well with Le Pen and has helped Marie Le Pen run for president in the past when she needed support because he felt this was essential for the democratic process. He was not the first choice of Macron and insisted on taking the job over other choices.

Pau is located 31 miles from the Spanish border with a clear view of the Pyrenees mountains. It is an ancient city with a University at Bearns, and a medieval heritage.
