The new J.D. Powers Quality Survey put out in Feb 2013 showed the Lexus, Toyota, Mercedes, Buick, Chevrolet, Lincoln and Dodge Ram brands performing at the top level in number of problems reported by owners of 3 year old vehicles. Land Rover, Jeep and VW brands did poorly. Most of the Chrysler Dodge cars performed poorly. The redesign of vehicles initiated by Fiat Chrysler CEO Marchionne does not show up in this study. The redesigned Jeep and other vehicles will show in next years study. The study also showed buyers of economy vehicles were likely to switch easily when buying another car. New models are showing fewer problems and are more dependable compared to previous years, with the average number of problems declining from 170 per 100 vehicles in 2009, to 132 in 2011, and 126 in 2012.

The GM restructuring plan of the Obama administration, as GM enters bankruptcy, was designed so that the UAW plays a constructive role in building the new GM. There is a wage freeze, and a no-strike clause until 2015. The union gets a 17.5% ownership of GM, which helps to align the union's interests in improving the share price. At the same time the unions health fund's shares are novoting, so that the union does not make decisions for the company. At Chrysler even though the union has 55% ownership shares, it has only one person on the Board. In the same way the union has a limited role in running GM. The idea is to get the union out of the us vs. they habits of the last 50 years.

Steven Ratner says the Obama administration is not considering bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler, asit does not see bankruptcy as necessarily abetter place for the auto companies, especially because of the consumer-facing nature of these companies. And the government is not considering calling the $17.4 billion loaned to the auto companies. THis takes alot od the pressure off of GM and Chrysler.

The Us rejects call for additional help to automaker GM for upto $10 billion for merging Chrysler and GM, to let a new administration make such a controversial decision which would mean layoffs for half of Chrysler employees. Scott Sperling, co-president of THL Partners, one of the oldest private equity firms, says rather than be anticapitalist the Obama administration is capitalism at work, as the restructuring is rebuilding two auto companies through bankruptcy by reducing unsustainable legacy obligations and making the bankruptcy process work right for these two companies. It also helps these firms get a new start. The process of "creative destruction" that helps make capitalism work is put to work in an enlightened way so there is creation as well as destruction, destruction through the tough choices that all stakeholders had to make, and creation through the new structures that are coming up. Preservation also works here through keeping what was good in these firms, which are the employees who had no part in management's mistakes, and workers who may be just as badly trapped in union ways. Scott also explains why the government's offer of 10% ownership shares to debtholders is fair, considering that without the government's money Chrysler would be worth little....

Was the deal with Cerberus to let it own a significant part of GMAC bad for GM, along with other decisions and missteps that led to disaster. The decision by GMAC to raise credit standards just when the full force of the credit squeeze was hitting financial markets has to have hurt GM sales, and aggravated a bad situation in which consumers first turned away from SUV's and trucks, which were big in GM's and also Detroit's product lineup, and then in November simply postponed purchases of automobiles. The November numbers coming in at over 40% below 2007 numbers for the same month, were a disaster for GM, making it necessary to turn to the government for help. Brian Johnson of Barclays Capital says GMAC financed just 1% of GM's sales in November compared with as much as 45% in a normal month. Thats huge for impact. And Cerberus appears to be responsible for the decision to raise the credit standards, and it has not acted in the best interests of GM but more in its own interests as a private equity firm. And its decisions have been heavily influenced by its souring investment in Chrysler, and its desire to extricate itself from Chrysler without putting in any more funds than it has absolutely need to put in. Now with government help to GMAC, the situation is being restored to where the credit standards are set at the minimum acceptable credit score of 621. Johnson of Barclays Capital estimates that with this lower score GMAC should be able to recapture about one third of its former loan volume, which considering that it had 45% of GM sales is only 15%. This still leaves GM in a bad situation compared to things before October 2008. And with the deteriorating unemployment situation in 2009 and further economic strain in 2009, this will not be enough for the uphill climb facing GM sales. ...

The automobile market in the U.S. showed strong sales for Chrysler, Ford and GM in November 2011. As a result automakers expect to sell 12.7 million vehicles in 2011, 10% higher than 2010. The average age of vehicles in the U.S. is 11 years, and this is leading to more buyers coming into showrooms. Some of this demand was for prickup trucks and SUV's. Ford Explorer sales tripled from the prior year. Ford sold 26% more trucks and 9% less cars compared to the prior year November sales. Sales of Jeeps went up 50%. GM sold 31% more pickup trucks. In the past sales of trucks and SUV's slumped with rising fuel prices and a slower economy.
