Reports from automotive experts in Stuttgart show German car companies and suppliers are not well prepared for the competition in electric cars. Their leadership may not be taken for granted in electric car world causing threats to jobs, tax revenue and growth. It was in a Stuttgart garage that Daimler and Maybach invented the internal combustion engine 136 years ago in 1884.

The Institute for Employment Research of the German government prediction is that if electric cars make up 23% of all cars sold in 2035 the country would lose 20 billion euros in output, 0.6 percentage of GDP, and 13% of its 870,000 auto industry workforce. This is because China is emerging as a formidable competitor in electric cars and has invested heavily in this sector.

As in broad band infrastructure shown in a recent report in Lyrarc, Germany has failed to invest enough in electric cars.

Shohei Ohtani being in the playoffs is everything a sport would hope for, says baseball commissioner Rob Manfred. Ohtani has led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a great playoff season against the San Diego Padres.

He has given LA Dodgers the best record in baseball with 54 home runs, 130 runs batted in and stolen 59 bases. His every move is followed in Japan and it has made the LA Dodgers Asia's favorite baseball team. There is the Ohtani effect on Major League Baseball reviving the whole game with fans and viewers around the world.

Adidas plans to open 2500 stores in China by 2015, including 500 in 2010, up from 112 today. Upscale outlets planned for the larger cities in China. The distribution will widen to 1400 cities by 2015, from 500 currently, by moving to smaller towns and cities in China's interior. Adidas also plans to ramp up its presence in basketball, a sport that Nike emphasizes. In China it will offer the NEO brand in smaller cities, targeting teens with prices about 50% of other Adidas brands. The strategy is to introduce Adidas products to people with lower incomes at lower price points, a strategy being used by Nestle, P&G and Unilever in consumer products for emerging markets. Adidas has opened an online retail store with Taobao.com and plans to bring in $500 in internet sales by 2015. Still North America with 14% growth will be Adidas's largest market, and sales in China are not likely to overtake sales in North America by 2015, according to CEO Hainer.

Flipkart, India's largest online retailer, was started by 2 Amazon executives in 2007. Flipkart has 22 million registered users and hosts 3000 merchants selling products ranging from electronics to clothing. Flipkart sales reached $1 billion in the last 12 months. In July 2014 Flipkart raised $1 billion from a group of investors including Tiger Global Management, Morgan Stanley Investment Management, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC. This follows the raising of $210 million in May 2014 from a group of investors led by DST Global, a Russian investor. Competitors include Amazon and eBay backed SnapDeal. Funds raised will be used to hire more engineers and improve mobile technologies, as over half of sales are made on mobile phones. India's online retail market is expected to grow 11 fold to $23 billion by 2018, according to Nomura brokerage firm. Flipkart earns money by charging merchants a fee for products sold on its online website.

Total's new CEO, Patrick Pouyanne, is moving ahead with plans for the $27 billion Russian Arctic Yamal LNG project. As China shifts away from coal with increased imports of LNG and pipeline natural gas, it is keen on providing financing for the project. Chinese banks will provide the bulk of the financing. Pouyanne disclosed in an WSJ interview that this would be $15 billion in Chinese bank financing to be arranged in 2015. Most of the LNG will go to meet China's needs. Partners in the Yamal project are OAO Novatek of Russia, and China National Petroleum Corporation. OAO Novatek's major shareholder is on the western sanctions list making it difficult to obtain financing from western banks. This makes the project riskier because of foreign exchange risks taken on by Total SA which are to hedge against.

Fears about a property price bubble in China bursting with the central bank not able to control the economy. Increasing fears that China may not be able to control the bubble. Other countries where bubble effects are taking place: Canada where housing prices are accelerating, Brazil with expected GDP growth of 5.8% and "hot money" pouring in, India where inflation has reached 15% and $92 billion of foreign investment in Indian stocks and bonds, Australia with its hot mining sector with trade connections to China, South Korea with growth approaching 5% and high rates of household debt. GDP and property prices increased by 11% in China in the 1st quarter of 2010. Many of these economies have connections with China, including Brazil and Australia with commodities sectors dependent on China.

Tom Friedman makes the case for a gasoline tax. As the US engages in Afghanistan, Iraq and considers the cost of health care and a large deficit, he argues that 45 cents of each dollar of agasoline tax should go to paying down the deficit, 45 cents to pay for healt care, and 10 cents to pay for cushioning the burden of agasoline tax on the poor and people who need to drive long distances to work. Energy Economist Phil Verlager says that a$1 tax on gasoline and diesel fuel would raise $140 billion a year. Mention of the gasoline tax is considered risky by politicians of both parties though it would reduce gasoline consumption and dependence on imported oil.

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute said the average fuel economy of all new passenger vehicles purchased in January 2012 was 23 miles per gallon, up 0.8 or 4% from December 2011. This includes cars, light trucks, minivans, and SUV's. Professors Sivak and Schoettle of the Institute also released a U.S. Eco-Driving Index, or EDI, which estimates average monthly emissions of individual U.S. drivers for Nov. 2011 at 0.86- this is down 14% from October 2007. The need to reduce reliance on imported oil for the U.S., Europe, China and India, the high price of oil, and the need to reduce automobile emissions to improve air quality, make improvements in average fuel economy and emissions per driver absolutely critical.

Meredith Whitney and her comments on the municipal bond market and potential defaults worth hundreds of billion of dollars. She said in a "60 Minutes" interview that she expected a series of municipal bond defaults. "You could see 50 sizable defaults, 50 to 100 sizable defaults, more. This will amount to hundreds of billions of dollars worth of defaults," said Whitney. Other analysts have questioned her dire forecast. Most of the problems in municipal bonds are fairly well know say analysts, however these comments have only accelerated the trend, and more than $14 billion came out between Dec 22 and Feb 2. In other words her comments drove a rush to the exits, which is seen as irresponsible by some analysts.

Higher rates have led Japan's giant insurance companies and pension fundsinto Us Treasury's, with Japan holding $ 573 billion in US Treasurys in September according to the USA Treasury Department. On 4 week securites the US has already sold Treasurys last week at a yield of zero which attracted money as a safe haven.On December 12, the dollar settled at 91.04 yen, down 18.4% this year. The concern is that a weaker dollar could result from a move away from dollar assets and the stronger yen would further weaken the prospects for Japanese exporters.

The big gaps between European and Japanese compensation of executives and the American compensation, with the Japanese compensation one tenth the USA's and one fifth the European compensation, and the European compensation one half of the USA's. The average compensation was $1.3 million a year for Japan including bonuses and stock option grants, according to Towers-Perrin for data gathered from 20004 to 2006, for CEO's of companies with more than $10 billion in revenues. The comparable USA number was $12 million and the European number was $6 million. In Japan it is not socially acceptable to have big pay packages says Jesse Fried, law professor of the University of California, Berkeley, who co-authored a book on executive compensation in 2004.

This DW.com report on Lebaon describes the launch of ration card program to help Lebanese families caught in poverty with the economic collapse there. Families will receive $126  per month  for one year in $556 million economic package to benefit 700,000 families. The funding backing for this project is needed from the World Bank. This report says about half of the people in Lebanon now live in poverty in one of the Middle East's once affluent regions. Since the economic crisis in 2019 DW.com says poverty levels have increased by 80%, local currency lost 90% of its value, and foreign exchange reserves decreased by $15 billion. 

Lebanon is a clear example of how mismanagement of the economy and political conflicts can ruin a country's prospects, with the sudden economic collapse bringing poverty and severe distress.

A decade after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit the nuclear reactors only 9 reactors are operating compared to 54  earlier. In Germany the final reactor is set to be retired in 2022. Depleting ground water reserves are leading to water shortages in India's cities. About 40% of India's people lack drinking water by 2030, according to government think tank NITI Aayog 2018 report. Water shortages are hitting cities such as Chennai. This report looks at the water shortage in remote Himalayan region Ladakh. WOrld Resources Institute points out that India is the 13th most water stressed country in the world, with a population three times the combined population of 16 countries that are water stressed. By 2030 water demand will double in India. The government is giving drinking water top priority in its plan for the next 5 years as key to development.  One of the problems is that farmers in the northern plains pay little for gorundwater use resulting in the planting of water intensive crops. The government plans to promote conservation of water as a national priority with education on this subject of water critical to achieving its objective of providing 100%  access to drinking water for Indians. Drip irrigation with minimal water use is also being encouraged to conserve water. ...

A big win for the US and a win-win for the European Union in the sense that it brings stability to the trade relationship. For the US it brings a level playing field in world trade that had suffered fo far too long from unfair advantages taken by Japan, Canada, European Union and other nations, in addition to the serious distortions of the world trade system with China's state version of capitalism financing an export model. So the first step was to straighten out the situation with partners and allies the US has supported in the past 75 years. US European Union Trade Agreement is reached July 27, 2025, at meeting between Von Der Leyen of Eu and DJT of the US in Scotland. It includes $750 billion EU purchases over 3 years of US oil and gas, LNG, nuclear fuel, semiconductors, etc and $650 billion in investments in US, including military purchases. It puts a 15% tariff on all products from the EU entering the US, replaces the tariff of about 5% under Biden. On Pharmaceuticals it is what the US president decides says Leyen, though for now it is included.  The EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefovic says- “I think that what was most important for us was to make sure we would have this predictability and we would have stability for our businesses." ...

UN projections show median age of Chinese citizens will overtake that of Americans in 2020. Yet China's median income is only a quarter of that in the U.S. Life expectancy in China today is 76, very close to that in America. In 1960 a Chinese person born that year had life expectancy of 44 years.  China is aging at the pace of Japan, and a bit slower than South Korea, but wealth per capita was three times higher in South Korea and Japan than China when the aging accelerated. A Chinese woman fertility rate today is 1.6 compared to 4.6 in 1973. A prominent Chinese economist says in a recent report that median age in China in 2050 will be nearly 50 compared to 42 in America and 38 in India. WSJ cites figures showing China will have gone from 9 working age adults per retired person in 2000 to just two by 2050. So how to pay for retirement of all these workers today? Government spending on retirement is a tenth of GDP, about half the level in older wealthier countries, and increase in spending will impact growth. Today this is about 6.2% potential growth rate. It also pushes wages up with a shortage of workers in cities such as Shenzen and X'ian even with the use of new technology and robots in factories.  Solutions are to raise retirement age currently set at 60 years, increasing labor force participation of women as Japan has done, and increasing productivity. China has transferred 10% equity stakes in four state owned financial firms to the national pension fund to shore up its finances as estimates from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences show it running out of money in 2035. Traditionally children supported families in old age but the one child policy leads to situations where the child is working or in another city. In Suzhou near Shanghai, a retirement business sends 1800 helpers to private homes and 130,000 retired people, in a new trend. The city administration of Shanghai plans 400 neighborhood care centres for elderly by 2022, with health clinics, drop in facilities, and homes. 12,000 elderly people use one centrre in central Shanghai area of Changning. ...

China's agriculture based on small farms is undergoing a change as the government pushes automated farming and large farms in the face of limited imports from the U.S. China put tariffs on agricultural imports from the U.S. in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. China's Agriculture Ministry says it will build 254 "strong agricultural industrial towns" as models for the country. President Xi stated on a visit to northeastern province Heilongjiang, that "unilateralism and trade protectionism are rising, forcing us to take the road of self reliance." The yield per hectare in the U.S. for soybeans is about twice that in China. Mechanized farming is limited in China because it would eliminate many jobs in rural areas. As the state has ownership of land and farmers merely use land, farmers are less likely to take risks with large long term investments. It can be risky for farmers to rent their land use rights to others, which would lead to consolidation.  Now a separate "Made in 2025" plan makes upgrading farm machinery and equipment one of the 10 goals. China may lift ban on genetically modified seeds now that ChemChina has acquired Swiss seed company Syngenta. China plans to partner with Asian Development Bank to provide $6 billion of loans, grants and investment to fund a list of development projects in rural areas, to modernize agriculture. WSJ cites a project of consolidation into an 8200 acre farm in Shandong province that  has increased yields 43% by investing in new farm equipment and planting machines, pesticide spraying drones. French voters turned to parties outside the mainstream left Socialist Party and the right Republican Party for the first time in a run off presidential election. The National Front's Jean Le Pen made it to the runoff in 2002, then lost to Chirac of the Republican Party who won 78% of the vote. This time the Republican Party candidate Fillon had about 20%, the Socialist Party candidate Hamon won just 6% of the vote with the rest of the socialist vote going to a far left candidate Jean Luc Melenchon who had 19.6%. The winners were Emmanuel Macron, a former Economy minister under president Hollande of the socialist Party, getting about 24% and Marine Le Pen, the daughter of Jean Le Pen of the National Front, getting 21.5%. Compared to the U.S. the situation is slightly different in France because of the very high unemployment rate for young people- younger voters supported the National Front, and people especially in rural areas in the north, north east, and the south of the country around Nice and Marseille supported the National Front. Macron's movement En Marche, centrist party drawing support from centre right and centre left without clear ideology except to renew France and pro-EU, was strong in urban areas, among more educated people, especially in Paris and the area around Bordeaux and Toulouse in the south east of the country. Fillon did not do well in some traditional Republican Party areas including Nice, with inroads from Le Pen, who defined the party around anti-immigration, closed borders, and withdrawal from the European Union. ...
