Trump says he supports the House Republican tax plan for three brackets 12%, 25% and 33%. In his earlier proposal Trump has supported a top rate of 25%. He made these comments, including support for deducting childcare costs, in a speech at the Economic Club of Detroit. Trump did not repeat a call for repealing Dodd-Frank bank supervision legislation. Clinton was critical of Trump's economic team of business people from hedge funds and the real estate industry, saying this was another example of "trickle down economics,"  for giving  "super big tax breaks to large corporations." Michigan has not voted Republican since 1988, and the auto industry rescue was organized by president Obama, a point heavily advertised in the 2012 presidential campaign. Romney had opposed the rescue effort, and during the 2012 campaign the WSJ reports say  Trump called the bailout of automakers a mistake because of expansion overseas.

Gerard Baker in The Times of London looks at California as some kind of dystopia, a malfunctioning place with rolling blackouts from PG&E the electricity company, drought and water shortages, housing costs soaring making it affordable only to the few at the top, and high taxes. He cites an expert from Chapman University who compares it to some sort of medieval feudal place run by nobility at the top, the investors, lawyers and people in entertainment, with the academy and the media as a kind of clerisy who propagate the ideas that this nobility supports, a small middle and the rest as serfs or minimum wage workers in logistics, retail and farms. Median costs of housing are about $613,000, and the affordability index of people who can afford housing is 32% compared to 56% in the country. Hispanic immigrants now prefer Texas, though with a loss of 6 million people in the last decade and gain of five million, it sees increase in population with high birthrates from the existing population to about 40 million. Half the population of homeless in the U.S. are now in California though it has only one eighth the population of the country. High housing costs and high cost of living hurt people at the low end, the lower middle and the retired the most. With low wages at the bottom and extremes of wealth, homeless, housing zone restrictions, drought and rolling electricity blackouts, this is not what the future should look like.  ...

Economic mismanagement that Barrack Obama deplores in some of the African countries that are independent. Zimbabwe stands out in the extent of collapse of infrastructure, living conditions and complete collapse of currency. And strikingly leaders of its neighbors in South Africa and other larger African countries have not spoke out. Mugabe's government has stolen elections and not tolerated any opposition. The problems 900,000 Ukrainian refugees in Germany are facing are shown here in DW.com. 350,000 are registered as looking for work. Ukraine refugees are given 3 year protection status, access to health insurance and the labor market. This report says many of the problems come from the lack of German language skills. There is also a lack of English language skills for people from eastern Ukraine who learned Russian, rather than English. Ifo Institute estimates a third of Ukraine refugees are led to taking jobs below their qualification level because of the lack of these language skills. All this is happening even as Germany is facing a severe shortage of workers with 1.7 million open jobs in 2022.

An off the cuff remark by Romney in Nashua, New Hampshire- "I like to fire people who provide services to me"- referred to health insurers that are not providing good care. Perry, Gingrich and Huntsman, the other candidates in the Republican primaries seize on this reference to firing, and another about pink slips made by Romney, to focus attention on the people Romney fired at the companies he acquired for Bain Capital. Huntsman tells reporters in Concord- "Governor Romney enjoys firing people, I enjoy creating jobs." Gingrich tells NBC's "Today" show- "Look I'm for capitalism, but if someone comes in, takes all the money out of your company and then leaves you bankrupt while they go off with millions, thats not traditional capitalism."

Reilly raises the question why asset allocation decisions of the type made by JP Morgan Chase since 2008, does not make it similiar to a mutual fund or a hedge fund, and why this should itself not be considered a form of proprietary trading. JP Morgan Chase had $600 million of corporate debt in its overall debt portfolio or 1% in 4th quarter 2006. By end of 2008 this increased to 5% or $10 billion. By end of 2009, this went up to 17% of the portfolio or $62 billion, and they are at that level today. The holdings of non-U.S. residential mortgage securities was also increased, going up to 20% of holdings or $75 billion at end of 1st quarter 2012, from $2 billion or 1% of the portfolio in 2008. Corporate debt holdings at Bank of America at the end of the 1st quarter of 2012 were about 1% or $2.4 billion, and at Citigroup were about 4.5% or $12 billion. The Chief Investment Office unit of JP Morgan handles this portfolio, which is the result of deposits of $1.12 trillion exceeding loans of $700 billion. The low interest rate environment after 2008 creates incentives for banks to look for ways to improve crimped margins and in the process adding risk....
