Samsung's decision to go with Android rather than its own inhouse developed software for its smartphones, and the execution of the new plan, was pivotal in its recent success. This is what differentiates it from Nokia and Research in Motion, companies which decided to develop their own software. In the case of Nokia, it made a costly switch from its Symbian software to Microsoft software. Samsung's other business in chipmaking is not as profitable, with margins dropping to 9.5%. Operating profit declined in the fourth quarter in the chip business, dropping by half from the prior quarter. The rapid changes with one costly error changing the whole playing field, also shows the precarious nature of the mobile phone business with changing leaders every few years, from Motorola to Nokia, to Samsung and Apple.

Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou told corporate employees that Hon Hai plans to increase the number of robotic arms in its manufacturing plants from 10,000 to one million by 2013. He says the move will "improve working conditions and provide a better career path to employees." The improvement of working conditions is a major concern after a number of suicides. The plans to automate dangerous and monotonous tasks is intended to migrate workers to other work. Hon Hai has about 1 million employees in China. It is moving plants to the less costly interor of China where wages are lower- to Chengdu, Wuhan and Zhengzhou from the coastal areas.

Five new smartphones will be introduced, including an all touch screen phone to compete with the iPhone. Smartphones using its new QNX software will not be available till 2012. Meanwhile Apple is bringing out a new version of the iPhone and new smartphone are being released by competitors. RIM's share of global smartphones is down to 12.9% for the 1st quarter of 2011, compared to 19.7% the prior year. In the N.
