The Indian Supreme Court on July 27 upholds the core amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)  which gives the enforcement authority, the Enforcement Directorate ED, the powers to make summons, arrest, and other powers to enforce the law. The Supreme Court called the PMLA a law against "the scourge of money laundering." After independence in 1947 some of the problems that Mohandas Gandhi witnessed in the early Congress party ministries allowed by the British in the 1930's became a part of the political fabric as accepted ways of operating. It is only in the last decade that these practices have come to be seen as inconsistent with the development of the country and ones that would have been rejected outright by Mohandas Gandhi as inconsistent and repelling to his India of Hind Swaraj. In a 545 page judgement the Special Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkarm Dinesh Maheshwari, and CT Ravikumar, stated that- "This is a sui generis (unique) legislation... The Parliament enacted the Act as a result of the international commitment to sternly deal with the menace of money laundering of proceeds of crime having transnational consequences." Mohandas Gandhi would be appalled by how elected ministries operated in the India that followed in the first decades after 1947. Not only were some of the basic principles of honest government being violated, it was being done with such impunity that over time it crept into the culture of how things operated in India, destroying any confidence the people had in the responsibilities of government and its ability to deliver on those responsibilities. The Supreme Court has now taken up the task of restoring some of the integrity of Gandhi's Hind Swaraj with its statement that- "Money laundering is an offence against the sovereignty and integrity of the country." Money laundering the SC says is "every process and activity", direct or indirect dealing with the proceeds of crime. Justice Khanwilkar wrote: "Today, if one dives deep into the financial systems, anywhere in the world, it is seen that once a financial mastermind can integrate the illegitimate money into the bloodstream of an economy, it is almost indistinguishable. In fact the money can simply be wired abroad at one click of the mouse. It is well known that once this money leaves the country, it is almost impossible to get it back. Hence a simplistic argument  that Section 3 (offence of money laundering) should only find force once the money has been laundered, does not commend to us."   ...

The Jal Jeevan Mission of Indian prime minister Modi had the goal of bringing clean water by taps in every home. Of 190 million homes in 2023, 116 million homes now have clean tap water. This is 60% of homes in 2023 compared to 17% or 32 million homes when the program was started by prime minister Modi in 2019 just before the pandemic. Jal Jeevan's safe supply of drinking water to 1.2 billion people is closely connected to health of people and diseases, epidemics,  in villages and towns in India. For the first time since independence in 1947 India gets a Master Plan for infrastructure development in the whole country.  All federal government ministries are pulled together under one roof. Ministries will coordinate their plans for infrastructure development. Specific investments, specific delivery times, real time monitoring will be done through digital technologies under a single master plan. Railways, highways and roads, waterways transport, energy, telecom broadband and other modal connectivity will now be done in one plan with all federal and state ministries pulled into the master plan. This will produce network effects with today's digital technologies as this has never been tried before in the world. Logistics costs of 14% of product cost will be cut by 6% to 8% under the new logistics frameworks set through this plan and the investments to be made of 100,000 crore rupees. This will boost exports and manufacturing as the new supply chains restructured after the pandemic attract foreign investment to India. This is the story of Jackie Robinson who ended segregation in American baseball in 1947. This was a turning point for the US during the Truman administration as the first moves to end segregation were beginning that would be heard during the Kennedy administration. Jerry Brewer describes the Robinson of the 1950's as he became a baseball icon and gave new hope to a new generation of Americans in the post war period. His son David says baseball was Jackie Robinson's way of creating opportunity in America and he did this in a relaxed way, holding back emotions, and keeping his smile against adversity. His wife Rachel 104 years is interviewed in this story and shows the same resilient spirit throughout her life. Brewer writes that Jackie Robinson's is a struggle that goes on, that nostalgia makes understanding difficult obscuring the struggles that got us to this point, and creating an idea that the bad stuff was handled long ago and is no longer there, that problems are exaggerated and society has advanced. Progress he writes is neither adequate or permanent, every generation has to learn and educate itself and share this with fellow citizens in its midst. ...

One is a milk farm Norm Lane in Chili Wisconsin which supplies 200,000 pounds of milk to a cheesemaker Nasonville Dairy in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Shown in this story in NYT are the Master Cheesemaker Ken Heimann who runs the Nasonville Dairy which produces Colby, Cheddar and other cheeses. Also shown are Josh Meissner whose grandparents started the mil dairy Norm Lane in 1946.  The economics of dairy farms are such that they depend on the government to set the price and with all the competition the margins on milk are quite thin. This is true for cheese also where there is the West Coast production of cheese that has larger output and greater mechanization than Wisconsin's cheesemakers. What keeps the dairy industry going these days is the production of whey protein a byproduct of the cheese making process. This has much higher margins with prices up from $3 a pound of whey protein to $10 a pound. On a typical day the Nasonville Dairy can turn out 150,000 pounds of cheese, and 150,000 pounds of liquid whey protein. ...

Germany has 60.4 million people who can vote in the upcoming September 26 parliamentary elections. Of this more than half are over age 50 years. This is part of a demographic change in Germany with falling population, more deaths than births in the country. As a result German voting population is getting older and smaller, 1.3 million smaller this time than in the last election. In 1987 23% of voters were under age 30 years, in 2021 this is down to 15%. For older voters in 1987 26% of voters were over age 60 years, in 2021 this is up to 38%. Older voters also have higher turnout of about 81% compared to voters age 21 to 24 years at 67% turnout. Older voters had a strong party affiliation early in their life says one polling expert for Infratest. Older voters tend to vote mostly for SPD or CDU the two main parties. The far right and far left parties have support in East Germany's 12.5 million population out of 82.5 million in Germany. Gone are the days when Pat Brown was able to put his son Jerry Brown in the race for governor, there are 9 persons running for governor of California in 2026. The current governor Gavin Newsom is said to be promoting his book in Nashville, Tennessee, where many Californians are moving with the inflated cost of housing in the state. Gavin Newsom's grand father gave a $5000 check to Pat Brown in 1943 to run for District Attorney, this report says citing the book. From that time Pat Brown became Attorney General and then governor of California in 1958, defeating Richard Nixon in 1962. In 1962 Pat Brown seemed vulnerable as his signature accomplishment setting up the UC system of college campuses and the water reservoir, tax increases to pay for this, were in their beginning stages and their lasting value not recognized at the time. Nixon from Whittier, California, was a former Vice President and was seen as likely winner. This toughly fought election created the Pat Brown myth and so called machine that helped his son Jerry Brown to two terms as governor 1975 to 1983, and again after serving as Mayor of Oakland and Attorney General to come back to governors race again in 2011 (because term limits came after 2011) and be governor again 2011-2018. Another way of looking at it is that in his last two terms it was also Jerry Brown's careful balancing of the budget and finances of the state, his environmental support, that made him a reliable figure for the public interest not just the political machine backing him.  California to be sure has had popular governors on both sides Reagan won in 1966 as governor of California to succeed Pat Brown. The Kennedys and Pat Brown are matched by the Reagan supporters in the state. In today's situation where China's dominance in industry and manufacturing has affected all parts of deindustrialized America, California is no exception, where much of the middle class has seen their savings eroded, the issues are different and the challenges are different. ...

On one dimension it is about NATO and European Union expansion on another about the history and culture, language in a Russian language part of the world and the effort of Ukraine in the 21st century to seek a new identity. It is a struggle between fraternal people in the Russian region and in that sense a tragedy. It doesn't have to be one for Europe, for Germany. NATO was created when the Soviet Union expanded after 1948 and Britain was a key protagonist of NATO. Would its disbanding after Soviet Union disbanded leaving Russia as a country with centuries of its own history, would this have been the right action. If needed a new organization with a new name and Russia invited to join, would this have helped? Could this have focused attention on a new power as chancellor Merz has said, the new power being China being something requiring attention. The US is beginning to have new thoughts in this winter on 2026. The northern European nations (Britain, Poland, Finland and the Nordic countries, Baltics) have historical conflicts for centuries among themselves, they appear to be using NATO for their own historical conflicts. The US understands this, it is looking for a way to get a peace settlement so it can focus on the western hemisphere and not entangle itself in northern European conflicts that have been happening since 1600 with changing actors. The Republican have taken the lead under DJT for a new approach to put American people and their wellbeing, their right to live free of drugs(Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia), to live free of illegal migrants (Guatemala, Mexico, Venezuela), and improve on the shaky supply chains that were concentrated in China to bring jobs home that were lost by the millions (tariff policy), and to make living affordable (energy, agriculture).  ...
