Meningitis kills 80,000-100,000 people each year, many times within hours of the infection. Many of the children are one year old and others suffer brain damage, loss of limbs, hearing loss. Jeanne Whalen tells the story of the unique collaboration between Dr Rappouli of Novartis and Craig Venter, leading to the new vaccine.
