Advances in education have been neglected by all the so-called technology companies at a time when online education can use a boost as students are in the third academic year when school attendance is disrupted. Instead taking gaming to the cloud is seen as the next frontier by companies from Sony and Tencent to Microsoft. Microsoft sees this as a consumer facing business when it is mostly in enterprise software, yet education and related lifestyle branches in music, sports, and others are by far the largest businesses directly interacting with users. Apple has done this with music, Disney with sports through ESPN, and education advances at a time of growing demand and use in the pandemic have not been answered.

European Union countries reopen for travel this summer. A new travel pass or digital Covid certificate is approved to promote freedom of travel as more people get vaccinated. About a third of people are vaccinated for first shot in France and about 40% in Germany, which means in coming weeks they will have the second shot and enough antibodies to make a return to normal life possible. The EU has negotiated this time with Pfizer for 1.8 billion doses and is building enough vaccine supplies. For the first time governments are stepping up with plans and resources allocated - in India the government now has plans to create supplies of 2 billion doses by the end of the year. This means there is new hope if the vaccination is accompanied by efforts to build booster shot supplies this time planning ahead. Managing the risk of those who are vaccine skeptical remains a problem to be tackled. Masks and other essential precautions also need to be followed in crowded spaces as this was neglected where there was a second or third wave. Poland has a huge shortage of doctors and nurses. The ratio of doctors to every 100,000 of population is the lowest in the European Union. It is twice that in Germany whose relative success in tackling covid pandemic comes from having foreign doctors and nurses treat patients. Consider that the average age of Polish doctors is 53, only a few years from retirement. The situation in terms of immigration reminds pone of East Germany and its depopulation of young people who left for West Germany. Something like this has happened in Poland in health care.  In similar ways other countries in the EU, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania stocked up on ventilators but now have few doctors and nurses left to operate them. It is stretching the limits of human endurance as this report shows in WSJ, with doctors working 36 hour shifts and working 73 hours a week.  Here we see Dr. Rotnicki, who works these long hours at a hospital in western Poland and says that it is like the Second World War, that it is hard times in Poland for health care workers. This report says Italian and British hospitals, not just German ones, are tackling coronavirus with Polish, Hungarian and Romanian doctors and nurses. This report shows that headhunters in Germany drive in to western Poland blanketing windshields with pamphlets promising 5 times more pay, 2 years of free language classes and housing. In Slovakia a third of all nursing graduates leave the coutnry immediately after graduation. In Poland not nursing pay has lagged behind with fewer going into nursing schools. Staff remaining in the region are older and educated under communism when less English was taught, or have returned back home from years overseas. Forcing doctors to give up private practice and work in public hospitals during coronavirus pandemic is not working in Hungary, where surveys find 6 out of ten medical school graduates intending to leave Hungary. These doctors say they are better off working at Aldi and Tesco if needed and making more pay, plus getting weekends off. Poland only recently increased pay for healthcare workers, some even survived on cash given to them by patients. Not a good situation for a country to be in and reflecting the wrong priorities not just in the U.S. and western Europe, but also in eastern Europe, during the last 3 decades. These priorities shifted money away from health care, education and infrastructure priorities. The people simply lost control of their spending allocation to "financial markets" that shifted money in a way that benefited only small group in society neglecting others and national interests. ...

The third pick of songs by chancellor Merkel for a farewell ceremony at the Defense Ministry, after her first pick of a Christian hymn from the 18th century "Holy God we praise thy name," is one that was on East German pop charts in 1974. It is "You forgot the color film," by Nina Hagen. The song is an angry lament that admonishes Hagen's boyfriend Michael, for not bringing the color film during their visit on holiday to Hiddensee Island. As a result she sings "no one will believe how beautiful it was here." The lyrics were written by Edward Demmler and it was sung by Nina Hagen in conventional schlager style. Merkel spent much of these 16 years seen on television sticking to strict austerity measures for European Union countries. Not investing in childcare, education, retirees, healthcare, and the infrastructure for broadband, roads and bridges, leaving Germany and with it the European Union in stagnation. Only in her last years was she persuaded by her vice chancellor Scholz of the SDP of the need to invest heavily in Germany and the European Union to fight the coronavirus pandemic with aid to the people of Germany and European Union. As she leaves she ponders the lessons both of the GDR in the east and the Federal Republic in the west, both had their flaws and their potential and both could learn from what was missing in the other. An opportunity for reflection and understanding. It is to Scholz and the Greens that is left the task of making the Federal Republic what it could be, to reaching as much of its potential for the good of Germany and the good of the European Union. Even though the singer became a punk artist after moving to the west following the fall of the Berlin Wall, she was a conventional. schlager style singer before that. So that 16 years after trying out the free market version of capitalism Merkel who grew up as a young East German teenager in the former German Democratic Republic realizes that this period after the fall of the Berlin Wall was not all that it was made out to be. As the Guardian puts it this embrace of her East German identity is no characteristic of Merkel as during these 16 years she rarely brought up her growing up years in East Germany. ...

For the last 4 quarters Tesla has average profit of about $70 million each quarter yet in May Tesla awarded shares worth $800 million in May to Mr. Elon Musk, CEO, as part of the pay package, says this report in the WSJ.  These stock options need to be expensed as stock based compensation expense. These expenses put Tesla's meager profits based on GAAP in jeopardy says the WSJ. A third quarter net loss of just $226 million would put Tesla in a loss situation for the past 4 quarters. This for a company that is attracting massive amounts of capital. Is this a misallocation of capital by capital markets as structured today when there are pressing needs for infrastructure, health and education from the investment behaviour that prevailed for decades before the pandemic? Are there questions about pay packages that are thousands of times the pay of average manufacturing workers at the same company consistent with the kind of society we once were and now want to build after the pandemic? The average pay at Tesla is between $70,000 to $94,000 a year for workers making the CEO pay package about a thousand times that of the average worker. At the height of the crisis at VW it was about 170 times the average worker in 2015 in Germany. ...

The direction Germany is moving is now clear. The Greens polling as the second largest party in Germany have a good chance of forming the next government in a coalition with one of the other parties the CDU or the SPD. Policy will shift to invest in the environment, health, education, social care, digitization as the Greens will have a leadership role. This was neglected in the Merkel years with the financial crisis in the eurozone limiting investment and only shifting public perceptions with the pandemic. Annalena Baerbock, MP from the eastern city of Potsdam, is elected as the new leader of the Greens party. She could be the next chancellor to succeed Merkel in elections on September 21, 2021. Baerbock and co-leader Robert Habeck 51, are together the leaders in the Green party going into this election. Baerbock has a masters degree in International law from the London School of Economics. She is respected by German business leaders and chancellor Merkel. By contrast the CDU/CSU is divided today with no clear direction for the future. The SPD, the party of Willy Brandt, still comes in third with only about  fifth of the voters favoring it. Years of neglect of its working class base during the Schroeder administration has led to the SPD playing a less significant role. This leaves the Greens in a favorable position with climate change becoming a major issue in Germany and the shift to renewable energy underway. Neglect of digitization, education, healthcare and social care under Merkel now offer German voters an opportunity to vote in a government that cares about this. ...
