This WSJ Exclusive report shows 1.89 million breakthrough infection cases in the US and at least 72,000 hospitalizations, 20,000 deaths among fully vaccinated people in the US this year. The WSJ reviewed medical record data for 21 million fully vaccinated people, and an array of state reports to put together this analysis. It shows people with weaker immune systems and elderly are more susceptible for breakthrough infection and hospitalization. It also shows that vigilance is necessary in following covid protocols for social distancing, masks, hand washing, as the figures show smaller but yet significant percentage of people at ages younger than the elderly are getting breakthrough infections and getting hospitalized. 3.35% of people 35-49 years who were fully vaccinated but with waning immunity from taking the shots early on and lacking booster shots to build immunity back up again, and who are breakthrough infections, are hospitalized in this WSJ analysis of EPIC's Health data. For people 50-64 years this is 7.45%. European Union countries reopen for travel this summer. A new travel pass or digital Covid certificate is approved to promote freedom of travel as more people get vaccinated. About a third of people are vaccinated for first shot in France and about 40% in Germany, which means in coming weeks they will have the second shot and enough antibodies to make a return to normal life possible. The EU has negotiated this time with Pfizer for 1.8 billion doses and is building enough vaccine supplies. For the first time governments are stepping up with plans and resources allocated - in India the government now has plans to create supplies of 2 billion doses by the end of the year. This means there is new hope if the vaccination is accompanied by efforts to build booster shot supplies this time planning ahead. Managing the risk of those who are vaccine skeptical remains a problem to be tackled. Masks and other essential precautions also need to be followed in crowded spaces as this was neglected where there was a second or third wave. Public education for this is essential to better manage the pandemic. ...

Nationally the new Omicron offshoot variant, the XBB.1.5 represents 40.5% of the cases in the US by Dec. 31, according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control or CDC. In New England and New York it is about 75% of cases and is a rapidly rising variant in Europe also. Only 38% of persons over 65 years in the US have got the updated covid booster bivalent vaccine shot.
