Who is the oldest Nobel prize winner in history? John Goodenough, a Nobel at age 97 years, who invented the lithium ion battery at a Lab in Oxford in 1974. John Goodenough is a good example for Joe and Jill Biden's idea of an America that puts more emphasis on the public good, and of the Christian (and Buddhist) virtues that life can only be well lived without greed and delusion.  He was an Episcopalian- what the Church of England is called in America.  He received no royalties for the lithium ion battery invention, only 6 decades of salary at Oxford, MIT and UT Austin. Goodenough persevered through a difficult childhood, studied mathematics at Yale because of his dyslexia, and physics at the University of Chicago under scientists Edward Teller and Enrico Fermi, getting a doctorate in 1952.

The coverage of the Republican healthcare bill and how it affects the elderly, and people on Medicaid, people in rural areas, is likely to have changed public opinion in the U.S. about the necessity of ensuring all Americans have health coverage. The Pew survey cited here in this NYT report by Zernike and Goodnough was done in Jan 2017, and shows a shift. The shift would be much higher today after people look hard at the consequences of what were simply hypothetical positions or ideological positions taken without looking at consequences in daily living. There is stronger sentiment about people having benefits taken away.  [article-55059] The opinion has shifted to where people see that coverage is important and people should not have coverage denied or benefits taken away from them. Opinion remains strong in favor of changes to reduce the high premiums, but not to replace the existing health benefits and law with no law at all to replace it. That leaves 20 million more uninsured according to the Congressional Budget Office. Changes have to be constructive is the popular view today,  and this requires dialogue between Republicans and Democrats- which has not taken place. ...

The down to earth candour of Hawkeye Pierce of the TV show MASH on an American medical unit in the Korean war is back in the movie "Marraige Story." Alan Alda returns as a principled lawyer in a story about a marraige divorce. The 83 year old actor lets his Parkinson's disease with tremor in the hands show. In real life Alda discovered he had Parkinson's at 83. Alan is also active, very active. He is a psychiatrist in the Showtime series "Ray Donovan." He also teaches at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

Recently we profiled Mr. Goodenough, a Nobel prize winning scientist who is active in his lab at a New York university 92 years making another effort to rediscover principles behind lithium ion batteries.
