As Mayor he put the bus and transport system back under government control and built the Bee Network, which is one of his success stories in Manchester. He is seen as the only Labour leader who enjoys confidence of the British public from the way he ran the large local government of Manchester. With UK Reform winning local elections he is seen as the leader who can bring confidence back to Labour, and to Britain as it navigates the post Brexit environment and strives for renewal of Britain, its economy and role in Europe. ...

This really is what soccer is about, not the glitz and glamour of television and record level contracts of players and team owners, or unruly fans and their criticism, that are eclipsing the best aspects of the game that brings so much to people all over the world. Chloe Kelly of England soccer gets in the winning kick in Euro Finals. England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties. This analysis in The Guardian goes over how Chloe Kelly survived obstacles to come back into English soccer and make a difference in games against Sweden, Italy and Spain. She had a falling out with Gareth Taylor at Manchester City and her deadline day decision for transfer to Arsenal played apart in reviving her spirits. By reviving her game she put herself in coach Sarah Wiegman's plan for the Euros soccer this summer. She came in after Lauren James was pulled out following ankle injury in the first half. The wingers pace and running came in as a threat to Spain's back line of Batlle and Paredes which had benefitted from the James injury. With Bronze and Hemp, Kelly changed the game in the second half as has so often happened in this tournament. In a previous game in the Euros England had also fallen behind in the first half and come back in the second half. A pass from Chloe got the equalizer with a header from Alessia Russo. The game then went into the extra time 1-1 and England won 3-1 on penalties. ...

He recall that at the time the penalty kicks were handled as more a situation of luck not skill and practice. He took the kick with little practice and he recalls some negativity in his mind, and missed. Twenty two years later at a knockout stage game in Moscow he faced the similar situation playing Columbia. This time he was manager. But this time the team had changed its attitude. Penalties were seen as being about skills, practice and effort. His focus was on the process, and let the results work themselves out. He encouraged his players to take a positive attitude and think positively during the kick. Combining skill and process worked and England won that game.  In 2021 Gareth Southgate is the coach for the English team that plays against Italy in July's final at Wembley stadium. After being ranked 131st before the Eurocup soccer champioships in 2016 Ireland made it to the championships, beat the Netherlands, Austria and Britain, drawing with Portugal and Hungary. How did they do it? 

Analysis of performance shows some key insights on team building. One is that too much talent can be overproductive. At work it often leads to stalling, or everyone reinforcing the others biases. Its bad if one or two persons become dominant instead of allowing all to participate. If there is not enough listening and social sensitivity, enough humility, teams can deteriorate. Too many talented individuals does not lead to that much improvement if clear thinking does not prevail.

There was humility in the Iceland team and the coach was a part time coach who worked as a dentist. All the Iceland players worked together better than the stars on the English team.

European Union countries, Britain and the US face the risk of a resurgence of coronavirus through the Delta variant and other variants. The Delta variant detected in India is 40% to 80% more transmissible than the Alpha variant detected in the UK, with the Alpha variant 50% more transmissible than the original coronavirus that originated in Wuhan.    Virologists in Italy feel they are flying blind at this time because of the lack of genetic sequencing in Italy, Spain, France and across most European Union countries. The UK has done genetic sequencing on 27% of recent covid positive tests. The figure drops to 1% for Italy and is tiny for most of the EU countries including Spain and France. Without genetic sequencing it is hard to predict and take steps. Another problem in the EU is that the southern economies Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Croatia are dependent on summer tourism for the economy. The UK economy can handle a delay to a full opening for 6 weeks without serious impact to the economy, says WSJ. Southern European economies can afford only short delays to full reopening. Croatia acted as a door to spread of coronavirus into central Europe when Germans and Austrians went to vacation spots in Croatia in summer 2020. This situation could be happening again in 2020 with British and other tourists visiting vacation areas in Portugal, and Germans visiting Greece and other summer tourism spots. Portugal's national health institute says the Delta variant represents 60% of new cases in the area around Lisbon based on early data. The government of Portugal is facing criticism for letting a Champions League soccer final to take place in Porto, Portugal between two English teams. Thousands of English fans watched the game at the stadium. Other problems are in relaxing of mask rules in France and Italy, last week in France and in the coming week in Italy. French nightclubs open July 9 without mask requirement. Germany is maintaining some social distancing measures and this includes mandating medical masks in closed public spaces and on public transport. Half of French, Italians, Germans are vaccinated and quarter fully vaccinated. Yet the gaps of unvaccinated people is large enough to cause serious concern of another wave. The relaxation of mask rules- the entire stadium in Budapest was packed for a recent game between Hungary and Italy for a soccer Euro 2021 game with no masks to be seen. Stadiums played a key role for the spread of the original coronavirus in Italy with a game in Bergamo, Italy, in the area near Milan. All this makes health officials concerned about the risks of still another wave of the coronavirus.   ...

This story of soccer players is true for many of the best, coming close for the fans is not enough, many finals and superb performances are not enough. This is true for coaches. The same could be said for England coach Gareth Southgate, coming close for fans is not enough. Yet for the hundreds of millions around the world who enjoyed the Euro Finals it was a really good game with England so close to the very end with a bunch of repeated headers any one of which could have ended up in the Spanish goal. Speaking of Harry Kane one can think of Toni Kroos who is has played for Germany 108 times. Germany as the host country did not make it to the semifinals. It was Toni Kroos's last game, a player as gifted and patient as Harry Kane. Lionel Messi did not score in the Copa America Finals game against Columbia, in extra time Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal in Miami. Still the golden boot went to Dani Olmo and Harry Kane of the Spanish and English teams, such was the extent of their effort, giving it their all, and the people watching the game all over the world thank them for it. ...

Jane Spencer interviews Lenovo CEO, Bill Amelio. Amelio throws light into how a company can best operate in China and reach out to a global market. Consider the way Amelio recruits Chinese talent working in the local language, and how he works with Chinese managers who tend to be more reticent on issues and opinion. Amelio is unique in his approach to hiring Chinese managers and building a bench with deep talent. He has abandoned what he calls the "colonial approach" of hiring with expat executives interviewing in English for managers in emerging markets. He says its a good idea to leave the English filter out to get more talent. Instead he has English language classes for the hired managers to help them improve language skills. Amelio talks about Lenovo's approach to the U.S. and other international markets as it competes with the likes of Acer and Dell. Amelio headed Dell's Asian operations prior to this position. Lenovo is testing ideas for giving low cost access at $100-$150 to people in India and China. The way this works is for Lenovo working with Intel and Microsoft to reduce the cost by 50%. For the bank to have half the ownership and the customer paying for the rest. Customers would buy cards for 10 hours of computing, and buy the computer back from the bank through regular use. Lenovo's strategy is to go after small and medium size businesses and consumers to increase market share in the U.S. and Europe. To do this it is using soccer star Ronaldinho and basketball stars to give Lenovo visibility as a brand. In other areas, Amelio has brought Dell managers to Lenovo to improve the supply chain management, an area Lenovo needed to improve....

England just had to stay calm, after Denmark went ahead 1-0 in the first 30 minutes, says this analysis of the Euro soccer semi final game with Denmark. Coach Southgate remained calm and had his players settle down. Eventually the stronger English bench wore the Danish players down. Harvey Kane scored on a penalty kick in the first part of extra time. Jack Grealish, Jordan Henderson, and Phil Foden were brought in and provided the energy on the English side that eventually prevailed. With the better overall bench and team England had to learn the lesson of staying calm through the early part of the game so that their deeper skills in the game could find expression.
