Scientists say 6out of 9 global climate resilience boundaries have been crossed. It is based on 2000 studies and published in the journal Science Advances. Broken boundaries means the systems have been driven far from the safe and stable state that existed, from the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago, to the start of the Industrial Revolution, says Damian Carrington in The Guardian. We are outside of safe operating space say scientists. Prof. Johan Rockstrom, is head of the Stockholm Resilience Center, who developed the boundaries framework. He says more worrisome than all the extreme climate events we are seeing is the dwindling planetary resilience. For fresh water in lakes and rivers and soil it was crossed earlier in the 20th century. Synthetic pollution from plastic waste in 2022. Nitrogen and phosporous, according to FAO 3 times safe levels added every year. For air pollution it was crossed in South Asia and China. Planetary boundaries is combined with social justice issues in a May assessment so that pro development policies to help the poor can be combined with major investment in climate change action. ...

This report in the New Yorker provides a good glimpse at the problems of global warming and limiting climate change goal of 1.5 degrees centigrade. Sally Ann Ranney co-founder of the American Renewable Energy Institute answers questions from the New Yorker magazine. Limiting climate change warming of the planet to 1.5 degrees centigrade by 2100 is a goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement. In the absence of this the global warming would be 2.7 degrees centigrade by 2100. For this 1.5 degrees centigrade goal to be reached fossil fuel use and carbon emissions have to be cut by 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2050. 

The ice pack in the Arctic is part of a planetary cooling system and its accelerated melting is a good sign of the danger the planet faces. Ranney answers a number of these questions.

The European Space Agency's Juice is not alone in exploring the moons around Jupiter by 2031. One year before the Juice reaches the moons around Jupiter, NASA's Europa Clipper Mission will reach Jupiter- in April 2030. That missions launches in October 2024 and follows a Mars-Earth Gravity Assist trajectory. It will make 50 flybys over Europa, one of the moons around Jupiter, some as close as 15 miles. With its massive solar arrays this will be the largest spacecraft developed by NASA for a planetary mission. 

Europa shows evidence of an ocean of liquid water below its icy crust. This is one of the places considered to be the most promising for habitable environments in our solar system.

From Kansas to Southern Spain, pictures from The Guardian show the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the night skies looking out into The Milky Way in December 2020. At the time of the pandemic understanding how small our world is on this planet as light travels at 300,000 kilometres per second and it takes 2 seconds to reach earth from the moon, thousands of years for light to reach earth from distant stars of which scientists say there are 200 billion. A British scientist and astronomer says there are 200 billion in a new book "The History of the Universe in 21 Stars."

Light in our galaxy The Milky Way travels at a speed of 300,000 kilometres a second so that light from the moon reaches us in less than 2 seconds. There are other distances we cannot even comprehend such as it taking thousands years for light to travel from distant stars in the Milky Way to earth. And even these distant stars have contributed to life on earth say scientists. During this strange pandemic where virus can mutate and can infect 18 million in the U.S. alone and about which so little is known, this idea of the planets and stars and time puts everything in perspective. Here DW.com talks to a British astronomer who studied at University College, London and Imperial College. Giles Sparrow is the author of "The History of the Universe in 21 Stars." Giles Sparrow tells us there are 200 billion stars, think of that for a moment!  Sparrow says 61 Cygni is an obscure star in the constellation of a swan. Astronomers with today's telescopes, itself something recent, have figured out the distance. Why are stars not shifting their positions as the earth moves around the sun? The reason is that stars are so far away we can only imagine these distances, or maybe not even able to imagine. ...

Jupiter takes 12 years to circle the sun, Saturn 30 years they came this close in 1623. As Giles Sparrow points out in his book "21 Stars in The Milky Way," ther are 200 billion stars, and distances are vast beyond comprehension. Thousands of years for light travelling at 300,000 kilometres a second to get to earth from distant stars in The Milky Way! Think of that and there is so little we know at this time of the pandemic about so many things!

After 5 years at 130,000 miles per hour, the NASA Juno spacecraft enters Jupiter's orbit. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. An earlier spacecraft Galileo spent 8 years over Jupiter, but lacked the technology to survey the planet that Juno has. Information about Jupiter could reveal the origins of the solar system. A titanium valult protects Juno's critical systems from the volatile atmosphere around Jupiter. On the 37th orbit in Feb 2018 Juno will dive into Jupiter ending the mission but providing critical information on Jupiter.
